MASH Report (6/29/15)
• Giancarlo Stanton is expected to be out four to six weeks with fractured hamate bone.
“From everything we’ve gotten, surgery was a success,” Marlins manager Dan Jennings said. “Now you just go through the healing process to have him back. From what we’ve been told, you’re looking at about a 4-6 week window, recovery time.”
I am not sure I completely buy a quick return time. It seems to be four to six weeks to recover from the break. Then, he will need to build up his game strength. I bet his return is closer to the six to eight weeks with a chance he doesn’t play again this season once Miami is out of the playoff pitcture.
• Anthony Rendon is back on the DL, this time with a strained quad.
This marks the second trip to the disabled list this season for Rendon, who missed the first 52 games of the season because of a left knee sprain and left oblique strain. Rendon hurt his quad in the sixth inning this past Saturday after an RBI double against the Pirates.
“I felt it coming out of the box and then I had to score on [Bryce] Harper’s single,” Rendon said. “I wanted to play through it.”
Rendon played the next three games with the injury. He had an MRI recently and “it showed some pretty good changes in [the quad],” manager Matt Williams said.
…
“The good part about the injury, he can keep his swing, keep his timing as much as possible although it’s just BP,” Williams said. “He will stay with us during the road trip and get some work done. Hopefully, it’s just for a couple of weeks.”
He is quickly falling into the talented, but injured bin with the likes of teammate Ryan Zimmerman and Carlos Gonzalez.
• Byron Buxton is on the DL with a sprained thumb.
Head trainer Dave Pruemer mentioned to Molitor the next day that he thought Buxton had bruised the thumb.
After the game on Wednesday, Buxton made it known that is was a little worse than he thought, and the testing procedures began.“The left hand is a huge part of the grip on your bat,” Molitor said before Friday’s game against the Brewers. “It’s disappointing for him.
We just told him, ‘You’ve got to weather the storm with, like anything else, and hopefully, you come out better on the other end.'”
It seems the Twins are just being a little overly cautious.
• Chad Qualls is on the DL with a pinched nerve in his neck which has bothered him for a few outings.
Qualls heads to the disabled list with a pinched nerve in his neck, an injury he said he’s had for a while but decided to bring to the attention of the training staff on Thursday.
“It’s been over time. I’m hurting myself and hurting the team by going out there so I finally decided to speak up,” Qualls said. “Can’t really keep trying to throw through it, it’s the best course of action.
“I’m not a big guy to make excuses for myself out there, but I think we need to get it taken care of so I can be 100 percent.”
• Josh Hamilton could join the Rangers today.
• Williams Perez will be out a couple weeks after getting hit in the foot.
• Tsuyoshi Wada is on the DL with an inflamed deltoid.
• Jeremy Affeldt will miss some time with a strained shoulder.
• Brandon Cunniff was finally placed on the DL after dealing with a strained groin for a couple of weeks.
• Johan Santana will stop his 2015 comeback because of a toe infection, but don’t despair too much. He will try again in 2016 for another comeback.
Velocity Readings
• Jarred Cosart’s average fastball velocity is up 1 mph since returning from the DL, but he is now throwing in the bullpen.
• Lance Lynn’s was the same as before his injury.
• Miguel Gonzalez’s velocity was at a season high after his DL stint.
• Justin Masterson’s velocity has yet to rebound during his current three-year decline.
• Neil Ramirez’s velocity is steady to a small amount down.
• Rafael Betancourt’s fastball speed is within his recent velocity range.
• Pedro Baez’s velocity is near a two-year high.

Thanks as always!
Two questions:
1. Are you pretty much giving up on Rendon this year? Or do you think he can actually be back and be productive? Between the oblique, the knee, and the quad, it seems like trunk-down troubles.
2. You said you don’t buy Freddie Freeman’s optimistic timeline last week. Any updates on this?
1. In most the leagues I am in (deep keeper leagues), his owners are pretty much stuck with him. The medical issues could continue, but I may try to buy low. I could see his owners being frustrated and looking to move on.
2. Nothing on Freeman this week.
