MASH Report (6/11/15)

Andrew Miller is on the DL with an elbow strain.

“He told us after the game [Tuesday] night. I guess he’s been experiencing it for a little bit and he told us last night, so we had an MRI this morning, we got the results later today,” Gir-ardi said. “He won’t throw the ball for 10 days to two weeks, and then you go from there.”

Girardi emphasized that the ligament itself is healthy, which he and Miller both found en-couraging. It’s the muscle that has a small strain in it.

Sounds like no Tommy John surgery, but I expect him to be out at least a month as he rests and then gets back into shape.

Matt Holliday is headed to the DL with a quad strain.

“We got the MRI results, and it looks like it’s a Grade 2 strain,” manager Mike Matheny said before the second game of the three-game set with the Rockies. “We’ll take those 15 days and reevaluate.”
….

“With Matt Adams, his was higher up the leg and you’ll also recall that it was torn completely,” said General Manager John Mozeliak, overseeing the Draft in St. Louis. “[Holliday’s] is not a complete tear at all. It’s much milder than that. It’s really something that can heal [without surgery].”

Sounds like 15 days rest and then the team will look to see how he has progressed. Finally he will begin rehab. I think his owners should expect him to miss at least a month.

Zack Cozart will likely be on the DL later today with knee injury.

The Reds are bracing themselves to lose shortstop Zack Cozart, who exited Wednesday’s series finale against the Phillies in the bottom of first inning with what appeared to be a serious right knee injury.

“He had an MRI, we are waiting for the results and [medical director] Dr. [Tim] Kremchek is in transit,” Reds manager Bryan Price said after his club posted a 5-2 victory for its fourth straight win. “I don’t know where he is, I don’t know if he’s out of state or wherever he is, but he’ll be here later this evening and he’ll review the MRI and let us know. I think it’s safe to say [Cozart will] be on the DL, I think that’s pretty reasonable, and the extent of the injury is pending.”

Update: And the worst possible news just came out.

Gregor Blanco was placed on the 7-day DL with concussion symptoms.

Rafael Betancourt is out with vertigo caused by a sinus infection.

Desmond Jennings will be out for at least a month as he recovers from knee surgery.

“I’m happy for Desmond, I think we all are,” said Rays manager Kevin Cash. “He’s been bat-tling and frustrated by an injury that there was some uncertainty on. Hopefully we found some clarity. The doctors went in there, scoped it out, cleaned some stuff out and hopefully it won’t be too long of a rehab.”

As of now, there is no timetable for Jennings’ return, but Cash said the best-case scenario is that the procedure would sideline him for at least 3-4 weeks.

First he is sidelined for three to four weeks. Once he gets off the sideline, he will need to get back into game shape. I would not be surprised if it wasn’t two months before he is back on the field.

Justin Verlander will start for the Tigers on Saturday.

Wil Myers should be activated from the DL list today.

• So should Bobby Parnell who has really struggled in the minors.

Jarrod Parker will be shut down for the rest of this season.

Right-hander Jarrod Parker doesn’t expect to return to the A’s this season as he recovers from elbow surgery.

Parker had successful surgery May 19 to clean up and repair the medial epicondyle fracture in his right elbow. He had Tommy John surgery twice before the most recent surgery, and now his main focus is on rehabbing and keeping a positive attitude.

Velocity Readings

Here are the velocity reading for several pitchers rehabbing in the minors.

Ivan Nova (92 mph before TJS)

Matt Cain (91.5 mph in 2014)

Ross Detwiler’s velocity is back up to his 2014 levels.

What are your thoughts about starting Verlander on Saturday? I usually skip the first start or two for a pitcher with a long DL stint, but I’m a fool who thinks that Verlander can be some where between better than average and near elite.
