MASH Report (3/21/13)

I will probably drop the fastball speeds from the report, but may make some notes of pitchers facing lingering velocity issues.

For some outstanding reading on the current state pitcher injury prevention, here is an article by Will Leitch of the New York Magazine.

Recent injury data

 • Derek Jeter may not be ready for opening day because of ankle pain. I figured he would play through the pain, so it must be pretty bad. I expect him to struggle until 100% healthy. Eduardo Nunez is the increase playing time beneficiary.

 • In other shortstop news, Hanley Ramirez is out at least two months.

 • Pablo Sandoval is working through elbow soreness caused by a bone spur. He is just resting to see if his elbow will calm down.

 • The Mets Shaun Marcum is experiencing shoulder soreness. I am amazed it took him so long to make the report.

 • The Cubs Ian Stewart will start the season on the DL with a quadriceps injury.

 • Ryan Madson experienced a set back to his Tommy John surgery. He now looks to possibly be ready by May.

 • Players expected to be ready by opening day:
Albert Pujols with plantar fascitis.
Zack Greinke with a sore elbow.
David Wright with a strained rib cage muscle.
Brett Lawrie with a strained rib muscle.
Grant Balfour with knee surgery.
Casey Janssen with strained shoulder.
Chris Perez with a sore shoulder.
Maybe Carlos Quentin because of knee surgery.

 • And finally, Chris Carpenter feels he may be done pitching forever. In Carpenter’s own words:

“I do (want to keep playing), I don’t think I can.”
