Lineup Analysis (4/21/23)

American League

Angels

Gio Urshela, Jake Lamb, Brandon Drury, and Luis Rengifo may not be startable or even rosterable until one wins a full-time starting spot between first and second base.

Zach Neto (.136/.240/.227) has started six straight games.

Astros

Mauricio Dubón has leadoff for five straight games.

Jake Meyers (.633 OPS) has started five straight in centerfield with Chas McCormick on the IL.

Corey Julks (.739 OPS) and David Hensley (.438 OPS) are splitting time in left field.

Athletics

Esteury Ruiz (.302/.389/.365) has leadoff for four straight games.

• There are no stars, or even average hitters, in the lineup and no one is getting full-time plate appearances. Over the last week, only three hitters, Aledmys Díaz, Tony Kemp, and Ruiz have over 20 PA.

Blue Jays

Brandon Belt hasn’t started more than two games in a row and just once against a lefty.

• The most games Kevin Kiermaier has started in a row is four.

Guardians

• The injury to Amed Rosario has messed up a stable lineup. It seems like the Josh Naylor (vs RHP) and Gabriel Arias (vs LHP) platoon has dissolved for now.

Oscar Gonzalez (vs LHP) and Will Brennan (vs RHP) are in a right-field platoon.

Mariners

Jarred Kelenic (career OPS vs LHP) has started against the last two lefties.

• A “Jose Caballero” has started two straight games. In AAA, the 26-year-old had a 1.143 OPS with 2 HR and 5 SB.

Orioles

Cedric Mullins bats ninth against lefties.

• I’m not sure if Adam Frazier or Ramón Urías are rosterable at this time. It’s tough to know when each is playing.

Rangers

Travis Jankowski (.857 OPS), Robbie Grossman (.515 OPS), and Leody Taveras (.615 OPS) are splitting two outfield spots.

• The open shortstop job is being split between Josh H. Smith (.529 OPS) and Ezequiel Duran (.433 OPS).

Rays

• Same platoons.

Taylor Walls (1.135 OPS) has started in four of the last five games.

Red Sox

Jarren Duran (1.104 OPS) has started four straight in center.

Royals

• As a fan of the Royals, it’s so hard to look at this pathetic lineup.

Kyle Isbel is not starting against righties.

Tigers

Nick Maton leads off when facing righties and sits against lefties.

Kerry Carpenter only starts against righties.

Akil Baddoo and Matt Vierling have cut into each other’s playing time almost making each one unrosterable.

Twins

Joey Gallo is back and playing first base.

Trevor Larnach (vs RHP) and Kyle Garlick (vs LHP) might be in a platoon.

White Sox

Lenyn Sosa (.462 OPS) has started seven straight at second base.

• With Yoán Moncada on the IL, Jake Burger (1.215 OPS) has started six straight at third base.

Yankees

Anthony Volpe has leadoff for four straight games.

Willie Calhoun (vs RHP) and Oswald Peraza (vs LHP) are in a platoon.

Franchy Cordero (vs RHP) and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (vs LHP) might be in a platoon.

National League

Braves

Sam Hilliard (vs RHP) and Eli White (vs LHP) are in a centerfield platoon.

Eddie Rosario (vs RHP) and Marcell Ozuna (vs LHP) are in a DH platoon.

Kevin Pillar (.543 OPS) has started in five of the last six games, against both lefties and righties.

Brewers

Garrett Mitchell (vs RHP) hasn’t started against a lefty.

Cardinals

• With Lars Nootbaar off the IL, Alec Burleson is still starting against righties.

• Right now the team is cycling four outfielders (Dylan Carlson, Tyler O’Neill, Jordan Walker, Nootbaar, and Burleson) through four spots (three outfield and the DH).

Cubs

• Steady now that everyone is healthy.

Diamondbacks

Josh Rojas is no longer in a third base platoon and leading off every day.

Alek Thomas (.612 OPS) has started in 14 of 15 games.

Jake McCarthy (.422 OPS) has started in only four of the last seven games.

Dodgers

• Injuries are killing this lineup.

Jason Heyward, David Peralta, Trayce Thompson, and Chris Taylor are splitting up one (with Betts in the OF) or two outfield spots.

Mookie Betts is now a super utilityman including SS! On Friday afternoon he played RF/2B/SS, his 2nd appearance at shortstop. The rich getting richer.

Giants

J.D. Davis (.934 OPS) is not part of any platoon.

Wilmer Flores (.778) has started seven straight at first base. It has been against both righty and lefty starters.

Marlins

Avisaíl García and Jesús Sánchez are splitting time in right field.

Mets

Brett Baty (vs RHP) and Eduardo Escobar (vs LHP) are in a third base platoon.

Tommy Pham (vs LHP) and Luis Guillorme (vs RHP) are in a platoon.

Francisco Álvarez (.316 OPS, 37% K%) has five games at catcher.

Nationals

• Right now they have four outfielders (Alex Call, Stone Garrett, Lane Thomas, and Victor Robles) for three spots.

Luis García has settled into the 5th lineup spot.

Padres

• The team can now roll out its ‘A’ lineup with Fernando Tatis Jr. leading off.

Trent Grisham moved down to the eighth spot.

Phillies

Jake Cave and Cristian Pache are splitting an outfield spot.

Josh Harrison (.687 OPS) has started four of the last five games at third base.

Pirates

• There is quite a bit going on in the bottom half and it is tough to see if anyone has grabbed a full-time role.

Jack Suwinski has sat against all but one lefty.

Connor Joe (1.061 OPS) has started in eight of the last nine games.

Reds

Jason Vosler only starts against righties.

Nick Senzel (.450 OPS) has started in seven of eight since coming off the IL.

Rockies

Alan Trejo has started three in a row at second with Ryan McMahon back at third.

With the Cardinals it’s more like rotating five guys among the three OF spots – Burleson did DH a couple of times this week when Donovan was out briefly (he’s back today) and Gorman had to play second, but non-outfielders have been at designated hitter for the other 18 games so far.

Carlson and O’Neill really are the odd men out. Burleson, Walker and Nootbaar have each started five of 6 games since Noot returned from the IL, to two for Carlson and three for O’Neill.
