Here is today’s chat trancript:
9:52 |
Justin Mason: Chat will begin at the top of the hour as long as we have enough questions. In the meantime, please follow me on all my social media’s (twitter, tiktok, facebook, youtube, and instagram) at JustinMasonFWFB! I am doing regular podcasts on the FWFB podcast as well as three episodes a week for the Sleeper and the Bust so definitely make sure you are subscribed there as well!
10:01 |
B’ryce Hammer: Shallow H2H points league. looking for some upside plays in my lineup while I wait for harper to heal up. I have the Noot in my OF 3 spot, and Winker/W.Franco competing for my Util slot. Do I drop one of these for Volpe?
10:01 |
Justin Mason: I would drop Winker very quickly
10:02 |
Cedric Mullins: 50/50 season coming for you baby!
10:02 |
Guest: Who hits more homers this season Larnach or Gallo?
10:02 |
Justin Mason: Gallo, but it is closer than one would think.
10:04 |
Patrick: Hey Justin! What are some good cheap OF options for my AL only auction? Talking end game $1 options…
10:04 |
Justin Mason: Vierling, Stowers, Larnach
10:05 |
Brandon: For daily leagues, what are some late strong side platoon bats that can be targeted that might be off everyone’s radar? I currently have rostered Winker, Naylor, Jared Walsh and plan on cycling those guys in and out based on whether they are facing lefties or not. Any other names?
10:06 |
Justin Mason: LaMont Wade, Josh Outman, TJ Friedl, Jake Fraley
10:06 |
RAH: Thoughts on a Javier Baez bounce back? Some people have pointed to a good finish to last season, but I think the date is cherry picked to seem like a longer period of time and therefore seem like more of a consistent rebound. His 2022 “2nd half” was largely propped up by a very good Sept. July and August were bad… if you look at the month to month, it looks randomly streaky. I don’t see any evidence there of an adjustment that was made to lead to better production – just a talented and streaky player.
10:07 |
Justin Mason: Talent is definitely there but the approach is super scary. That being said, the floor is safer than it appears so I don’t mind taking the bounceback gamble.
10:07 |
Guest: Logan Gilbert = Cy Young?
10:07 |
Justin Mason: Probably not but I do like him
10:07 |
20MO God: Which Angels “closer” gets the lions share of saves?
10:08 |
Justin Mason: I think Estevez gets first shot, but I wonder if the guy that finished with the most saves is not yet on the team
10:08 |
BEN. AFFLECK.: Do you have more interest in Brice Turang or Joey Wiemer for this year in a NL Only roto league?
10:08 |
Justin Mason: I have interest in both. Turang will have the more immediate impact
10:08 |
Jack: I got Cedric for $15 in my AL only when guys like Teoscar/Soringer went for $20 and Meneses went for $17. Think they will play him against lefties this year?
10:09 |
Justin Mason: I think they have to to start the season. If he continues to struggle against them, then he could lose time
10:10 |
Babo: Brewers have a lot of young OF talent. Do you think Weimer makes the team and what kind of outlook do you have for him, Sal, Mitchell, or even Chourio?
10:11 |
Justin Mason: I don’t think Weimer makes the team out of spring. I am really interested in Mitchell. Nice speed/power combo. Frelick is someone I like but I think it is a bit before he comes up.
10:11 |
Guest: looking for one more OF. How would you rank these? Colas, G. Mitchell, W. Myers, Friedl, Bader, Avisail Garcia. Thanks!
10:12 |
Justin Mason: Myers, Friedl, Garcia, Mitchell, Baer, Colas
10:12 |
Mario: Which power-over-hit young OF would you rather roster: Larnach, Stowers, Wiemer, or Jesus Sanchez ?
10:12 |
Darling_Darvish: Thoughts on Darvish this year and what kinds of trades should I be looking at to move him?
10:12 |
Justin Mason: I think he is a pretty safe SP2. I would want a pretty nice haul for him.
10:12 |
a.: OBP -12 team: better MI, Massey or Turang?
10:13 |
Fire John Smoltz: How early are you reaching for J Walker and Volpe if you’re drafting today?
10:13 |
Justin Mason: Yes, but I am not putting them in the top 60
10:13 |
Vic: Wisdom or Anderson? Loaisiga or Marranacio? Ober or Dodd?
10:13 |
Justin Mason: Anderson, Loaisiga, Dodd
10:14 |
K2: With Luke Voit signing a major league deal with MKE, how are your projections looking? Is he destined for a small side platoon?
10:14 |
Justin Mason: Seems like it
10:14 |
Phil: For a keeper league, who will be better for fantasy? Wander or Volpe? Thanks
10:15 |
Justin Mason: Wander if he is healthy
10:15 |
Jack: Clarke Schmidt, Boyd, Turnbull or Erod in an Al only? 6×6 (with wins and qs).
10:15 |
tumtum: AL 8tm keeper auction two catcher: I received a trade proposal offering Pena($7), A. Vaughn($9) and Severino ($14) for Witt ($15). Should I take the offer?
10:16 |
Justin Mason: I want the Witt side of this.
10:16 |
Mario: Any optimism for a Castellanos rebound?
10:17 |
Justin Mason: I don’t have much. If you are betting on him it is because of his name. There was not much in the profile that showed he was unlucky. He didn’t look great in spring either.
10:19 |
Bad Jimmy: Would you drop Jorge Mateo or Jack Flaherty (both extra, bench players) to pick up Dylan Dodd?
10:19 |
Guest: Where does Anthony Volpe slide into your rankings now that he’s won the SS job?
10:20 |
Justin Mason: I haven’t updated his projections but I would think he would be 13th for me
10:21 |
Vic: In a 12 team 5 x 5 NL Only with S + Holds. Should I start my season with 4 RP?. Only an 850 innings minimum.
10:21 |
Justin Mason: I think you would find yourself behind in wins and strikeouts.
10:22 |
Carlos: Who’s your favorite late round potential closer to target: Puk, Fulmer, Ottavino, Estevez, Reynaldo, May, Graterol
10:22 |
Volpemort: Who do you like better for Ottoneu FG Points: Kerry Carpenter, TJ Friedl, Brandon Marsh
10:22 |
Fire John Smoltz: How concerned are you about Soto and Wander right now?
10:22 |
Justin Mason: I am concerned enough that I wasn’t considering drafting them during my main event.
10:22 |
Jeff !: With some helium guys confirmed to be on opening day rosters (Walker, Volpe) there are some still good prices on others (Wesneski, Turang). Who’s your favorite target at their current price?
10:23 |
Justin Mason: Wesneski for sure. Ryne Nelson in Arizona is another.
10:23 |
Jack: Just an idea, for your next pod a palooza, you should have 15 minute consultations as a prize with you and others in the industry during draft season. Help with keepers/draft strategies etc.
10:23 |
Justin Mason: I would definitely do that
10:23 |
Kyle: Did you draft a main event team? If so, how did it go?
10:24 |
Justin Mason: I did on Saturday. I had a rough start because I went hitting early and the pitching cost were insane. I recovered well enough, but I definitely am hurting for pitching.
10:24 |
Guest: Thanks for chatting! Would you trade Senga for Yoshida? I have a strong pitching corps (deGrom, McClanahan, Urias) and I could use offense, so I’m inclined to do it, but so hard to know what to expect from either one.
10:24 |
Guest: 2023 Bounce Back Challenge: Brandon Lowe or Max Muncy for 2B?
10:25 |
Justin Mason: I think Muncy is the safer bet to bounceback but Lowe has the greater upside of the two
10:25 |
Fire John Smoltz: F, marry, kill : Betts, Trea, Acuna
10:25 |
Justin Mason: Marry Trea, F Acunca, K: Betts. Love all three though
10:26 |
Guest: In a 12-team, H2H categories league. I have no SS depth after Correa and one of my MIF spots is occupied by Brandon Drury ) I’m in trade conversations for Corey Seager with me sending Pablo Lopez, Blake Snell, and Jake McCarthy the other way. I have incredibly deep pitching and won’t miss the Ks too much. Is this a fair consolidation of talent to address a need, or a colossal overpay?
10:26 |
Justin Mason: I think you should get another piece back, but in a pinch, I would do this.
10:26 |
Guest: AL Only: Eflin or Greinke?
10:26 |
BCubs: Thanks for the chat.20 team roto, who do you like out of the four – Keller, Ashcraft, Schuster, Pepiot. I’m probably dropping a couple of them for relievers in a few weeks
10:27 |
Justin Mason: I like all three, but Ashcraft and Keller are my fovrite.
10:27 |
Carl: You buying Bradish as a sleeper/breakout this year?
10:27 |
Justin Mason: Absolutely! I drafted him in a ton of leagues this year. Love the pitch mix change we saw last year.
10:27 |
B’ryce Hammer: In the same vein of upside plays… is Kelenic gonna go boom this time around?
10:27 |
Justin Mason: I hope so! He is on 50% of my teams heading into the season.
10:27 |
Guest: Do you think Kyle Schwarber would be a significant upgrade over Teoscar Hernandez or Eloy Jimenez in the OF?
10:28 |
Justin Mason: I think he is an upgrade, but not significant.
10:28 |
Chris: What is your all-time go-to candy bar?
10:28 |
JoJo: How excited should we be about O Colas? Is he better than say Austin Hays or Adam Duvall?
10:29 |
Jim: Wil Myers or Oscar Colas?
10:29 |
Justin Mason: I am intrigued. I think he should be better than Hays or Duvall. Definitely looking forward to seeing if he can hold the role.
10:29 |
Justin Mason: Myers over colas though
10:29 |
Pete: Drafted this weekend, 12 team mixer, ended up a little light at SS – Baez on the rebound and Estrada. Is Royce Lewis worth a stash? Garcia (KC), Mauricio and J. Ortiz are other stash options.
10:29 |
Justin Mason: Lewis won’t be ready until the summer. I think I would stash Garcia instead
10:29 |
Bill: im Tired of drafting, I want opening day to be here today!
10:30 |
Justin Mason: I am never tired of drafting but I can’t wait for opening day!
10:30 |
B’ryce Hammer: I daydream of one more peak Gallo season… Some new change in approach that unleashes an actual hit tool.
10:30 |
Justin Mason: Probably not going to happen
10:30 |
Kyle: When will you have your “This Year’s Mullins” article out?
10:30 |
Justin Mason: I wrote it weeks ago on Fantasy Pros
10:30 |
Guest: Looking to trade Julio Urias for OF help; is Starling Marte a good return, or should I be aiming higher or lower?
10:30 |
Justin Mason: I think you should be able to get a little more than that
10:31 |
Guest: Got offered a 3$Matt Mervis for my $2 Gavin Stone in otto 4×4, I’m hurting at 1st with Tork, Dom smith and Drury?l, Is that decent? I’m worried Stone will be amazing
10:31 |
Justin Mason: I think that is decent but Stone is super intriguing.
10:32 |
Carlos: 12-tm H2H ESPN pts league – have HS Kim at a UTIL spot (have O. Cruz, E. Tovar at SS, IN spots), but wanna get another hitter instead. Options include Yaz, Laureano, Wong, Stott, D. Hall, C. Taylor, O. Cabrera, Margot, Heim, A. Thomas, Marsh, Fraley, H. Ram…Hold, let opening results determine, or change now?
10:32 |
Justin Mason: I think I would hold for now.
10:32 |
Mario: What’s the word on Austin Meadows? Is he healthy? Was there a mental health thing last year? More to point… Is he back to hitting like old self?
10:32 |
Justin Mason: At this point, I am staying away until he proves he is back
10:32 |
B’ryce Hammer: Feels like I see Dylan Cease’s name on every bust list out there… seems kinda funny to ignore year over year improvements in a guy, no?
10:33 |
Justin Mason: He could definitely shove, but there are so many red flags that I wasn’t interested at his price.
10:33 |
Moose Skowron: In aa traditional 5×5 AL league, I can only freeze two of the folllowing three: Alejandro Kirk (toppers), Adolis Garcia (toppers), Manuel Margot ($6). Who’s the odd man out?
10:33 |
Jimmy: Please rank these so-called AL closers: LeClerc, Lange, Esteves, May, Lopez, Gravenan
10:34 |
Justin Mason: LeClerc, Lopez, May, Estevez, Lange, Graveman
10:34 |
Caley: Anthony Volpe hit .251 in AA last year. .236 in a short stint at AAA. Do you think he hits about .235 in the majors?
10:34 |
Justin Mason: I think he could. I wasn’t in on the hype train for this year because I didn’t think he would make the team and now because his price is too high
10:35 |
Weekly moves: What order for these waiver claims to help early in the season: Kikuchi, Martinez, Irvin at SP? How about Walsh, Suwinski, E Rosario as a bench bat?
10:35 |
Justin Mason: Martinez, Kikuchi, Irvin.
10:35 |
Justin Mason: Walsh, Suwinski, Rosario
10:35 |
Guest: Do you see Ryan McMahon hitting 30 dongs with his new approach
10:35 |
Justin Mason: I definitely think it is in the range of outcomes.
10:35 |
Guest: Could Matt Moore be the saves leader for the halos?
10:35 |
Justin Mason: Anyone could with that bullpen
10:35 |
Guest: Twitter follower of you and Mrs Mason. You guys are awesome. Honest and real. Thanks
10:35 |
Go giants!: best keeper league option for next 2-3 years??? Volpe, J Walker, or someone else???
10:36 |
Bad Jimmy: Thoughts on Danny Jansen breaking out this year? I know he already sorta did at the end of last season, but can he do it for a full season? If already rostering Varsho, should I cut bait for someone like Dodd or Franmil?
10:36 |
Justin Mason: I think the only thing that stops him is if Belt takes away too many DH opportunities. In a one catcher league, I would try and trade him or varsho
10:37 |
Question: Do you know when the tyeam-by-team prospect lists on FanGraphs will be finished? Right now, there are only 6 AL teams completed, and 4 NL teams done.
10:37 |
20MO God: How many PAs does Burleson get in that loaded STL lineup?
10:37 |
mzpejp: Hey Justin, 9 team league. Can keep up to 15. Already have 137 tied up in 8 players leaving just 123 for 15 slots. Freeman is one of those keepers at 38. Should I let him go to fee up more $? And should I keep Keibert Ruiz at 10 if I do let Freeman go? Thanks.
10:37 |
Justin Mason: I would keep freeman
10:38 |
Guest: Hey Justin, can you rank the following in a h2h 5×5 categories league (obp): MVargas, DHall, TMancini, WMyers
10:38 |
Justin Mason: Vargas, Myers, Hall, Mancini
10:38 |
Dan T.: Any chance Moncada finds his power swing or was 2019 his high mark?
10:38 |
Justin Mason: To be quite honest, I have no idea what he is. I just hope he can stay healthy so we can see.
10:39 |
Justin Mason: I did take a $1 gamble on him in my Vegas auction, so I am hoping for a bounce back
10:39 |
Colton: Hey Justin, hope things are well today! Need to pick up a reliever in my league, who would you take of Robertson, Aroldis, Alex Lange, Leclerc or Ottavino? This is H2H points, Saves are 2, Holds are 1
10:39 |
Good Jimmy: Drop Colas for Franmil?
10:39 |
Justin Mason: I am ok with that. I drafted Franmil a bunch this weekend.
10:39 |
Craig: what’s your interst level in Jesse Winker? Bounce back?
10:39 |
Ryan: Hey Justin! Can you rank these 1B options? Myers, Mancini, Vargas, Hall, Tork
10:40 |
Justin Mason: Vargas, Myers, Tork, Hall, Mancini
10:40 |
Bench Rat: speculating on speed. Turang or E. Ruiz? both made their squads and could use some sb clout on my bench.
10:40 |
Mustin Jason: Kelenic or Adell?
10:40 |
Bobby pitch clock: Will Adolis Garcia finish as a top 50 fantasy contributeur?
10:40 |
Justin Mason: Borderline, but I say no
10:40 |
YankeesFan: Any favorite reserve pitchers to target 12 team mixed?
10:40 |
Justin Mason: Bradish, Jose Suarez, Matt Boyd, Keller, E-Rod
10:41 |
Guest: Rank Matz, David Peterson, or Mitch Keller?
10:41 |
Justin Mason: Peterson, Matz, Keller
10:41 |
Guest: How Hot Is This Take?…: Joey Wiemer does actually make the Brewers opening day roster (the spot appears down to him and Owen Miller), and proceeds to put up a 20/20 season.
10:41 |
BigBird: 6 cat OBP league. Would you cut Josh Naylor for Fraley, Friedl or Taveras?
10:41 |
Justin Mason: I would but I am in love with Friedl
10:41 |
good general question: So no Bullpen Report till it’s no longer all that much needed?
10:42 |
Justin Mason: Well, I have never done the bullpen report, so I don’t know
10:42 |
Phil: For 12 team H2H, I have Woodruff, Musgrove, and Kirby as my top 3 starters. Should I be fine or will I need to upgrade? Thanks.
10:42 |
Justin Mason: You should be fine
10:42 |
BigBird: With Kolten Wong potential platoon and worse ball park. Would you rather have L. Urias, B. Donovan?
10:43 |
Justin Mason: I would rather have either, but prefer Donovan
10:43 |
YankeesFan: Dynasty league… Volpe or Oneil Cruz?
10:43 |
Guest: Clarke Schmidt winning a spot bumps him how much? Drop Heaney for him?
10:43 |
Justin Mason: I would be ok dropping Heaney for Schmidt.
10:43 |
Conor A: How sad are we about Grayson Rodriguez?
10:43 |
Justin Mason: I was pretty shocked. Hopefully he will be back soon.
10:44 |
B’ryce Hammer: Apparently my league is completely missing the memo about Seiya Suzuki, OF….13?!?! Geeze… do I ditch Adolis or Noot for this guy?
10:44 |
Justin Mason: I would drop Noot for him.
10:44 |
IGuy: With Clase as a foundation, are Duran or Munoz safe enough RP 2’s? Which would you target?
10:44 |
Justin Mason: Prefer Munoz over Duran, but I worry neither has the job to themselves
10:44 |
Skinny: What is your concern level with these injured SPs: Triston, Severino, Rodon, Glasnow?
10:45 |
Justin Mason: Pretty concerned about all of them to be quite honest.
10:45 |
Justin Mason: Least concerned on Glasnow, but I am not really drafting any of them at this point unless I have unlimited IL spots
10:45 |
Keith Hernandez’ cat: Does anyone get 550 ABs in the Cardinals OF?
10:46 |
Justin Mason: I think O’Neill and Walker do
10:46 |
YankeesFan: Need a fill in for Hoskins. Can be at MI or CR. Luis Urias, Arreaz, or Nico Hoerner? (OBP and SLG league)
10:46 |
Justin Mason: Hoerner for me
10:46 |
goodfor: would people be as interested in Volpe if he didn’t drop 50 Sb last year in the minors?
10:46 |
Justin Mason: He is a top 10prospect in baseball
10:46 |
Guest: Mike Soroka. When do you see him coming back? What do you project for him? Seems like lots of people are sleeping on him.
10:47 |
Justin Mason: I think he is back in a month or so, but I have very little hope for 2023 relevance.
10:47 |
DJ: It appears Joey Wiemer could make the Brewers opening day roster (it’s between him and Owen Miller at the moment). Wiemer has the ingredients to be a fantasy darling, he put up a 20+ HR / 30+ SB season in the high minors last year despite missing a few weeks with a thumb/hand injury. Are you buying or selling Wiemer as a dark horse difference maker in deeper leagues?
10:49 |
Justin Mason: I don’t think he makes the team but I would be super excited if he does. Maybe he flames out like Josh Lowe did last year, but I think the upside is good enough it is worth the gamble
10:49 |
Yaki: Is Elehuris Montero getting completely overlooked right now? Can he hit .250 with 25-30 HR?
10:50 |
Justin Mason: If he plays full time, maybe, but I worry about the Moustakas signing.
10:50 |
Justin Mason: I have a ton of questions and only about ten minutes left, so I am going to try and speed round through a bunch of them!
10:50 |
Guest: Best place to see what 26-man jobs are still up for grabs?
10:50 |
Justin Mason: Roster Resource!
10:50 |
Roger: Moreno or Campusano? Yelich or Winker (OBP league)? Who is your favorite cheapest NL ace?
10:51 |
Justin Mason: Moreno, Yelich, Musgrove!
10:51 |
chris: does charlie blackmon have anything left in the tank? pretty catastrophic fall from grace the past few years
10:51 |
Justin Mason: He has very little
10:51 |
YankeesFan: Who is the real Jared Walsh? 2022 or 2021?
10:51 |
Justin Mason: A mix between the two
10:51 |
chris: Which version of Jose Berrios are you expecting to show up this year? are you buying any shares?
10:51 |
Justin Mason: I have completely stayed away
10:51 |
chris: are you avoiding dustin may given the threat of an innings limit?
10:51 |
Hector: OBP league (6×6)…..Brandon Marsh or Seth Brown this year?
10:51 |
Last round: In the last round of my draft right now. Which stream should I draft, pepiot (col), Walker (tex, cin, cin), Ashcraft (with new slider, pit), martinez (col), wacha (col)
10:52 |
Guest: What does Kolton Wong’s season look like at the top of the M’s order?
10:52 |
Ryan: 10-team mixed saves and holds league with starts limit, so relievers with SP eligibility are really valuable Does either of Alex Reyes or Ben Joyce become relevant this year?
10:52 |
Justin Mason: Joyce could be
10:52 |
Tom: Will Brennan a good dart throw OF? Need help until Bader comes back.
10:52 |
Justin Mason: Yeah, I think he is a nice gamble
10:52 |
Fire John Smoltz: Choose one in a keep forever – Carroll or Gunnar?
10:52 |
Tj: What are your thoughts on Morel? Do you see him having regular role with Cubs or overcoming some of his strikeout/contact woes?
10:52 |
Justin Mason: He really needs to improve the contact skills if he wants to stick in the Majors
10:52 |
Guest: Are you at all bullish on Galllo or Garver this year?
10:52 |
Questions, Questions: Are B. De La Cruz or J. Sanchez worthwhile in regular 10 and 12 team H2H or roto leagues?
10:53 |
Justin Mason: Probably not
10:53 |
Questions, Questions: What to make of Carlson being out in a util role? Immediate drop in 10-player keeper leagues?
10:53 |
CB: Got stuck without a 2B. Who would you go for out of these? McMahon, Massey, B. Donovan, Luis Urias
10:53 |
Justin Mason: McMahon and Donovan
10:53 |
Questions, Questions: The Franmil seems back to his old self. Just sayin
10:53 |
Justin Mason: Drafted him in both my main and NFBC auction in vegas!
10:53 |
mike: do you buy the notion that Bohm will tap into his power?
10:53 |
Justin Mason: Not until he raises the launch angle
10:53 |
K2: Keep forever dynasty: would you trade away Nootbaar for PCA and Cowser? Have plenty of active OF depth.
10:54 |
DJ: Are you taking the over or under on Aledmys Diaz getting 500 plate appearances this season?
10:54 |
Guest: after my draft I felt my pitching was light in my al only so just traded Waldichuck and Yoshida for gausman and pollock. good deal for both if he needed hitting? or will I regret that?
10:54 |
Justin Mason: Love the Gausman side
10:54 |
Guest: I didnt see either you or sporer rank fujinami. Was it there and I just missed it, or what do you think of him and in what range does he fall for you?
10:54 |
Justin Mason: I honestly don’t love guys coming over in their first year unless I see huge upside which I don’t here.
10:54 |
Mike: do I hold onto Grayson Rodriguez in a 10team points league or send him to the wire for someone who is active?
10:54 |
Justin Mason: I would hold for now.
10:54 |
Chaz: When we will see Grayson? Not making opening day roster.
10:54 |
Justin Mason: End of April

These fantasy chats are pretty much useless for the skilled fantasy player. 98% of the questions could be answered by “just check the projections, you moron!” Just mediocre fantasy players make up 98% of the audience for these chats, so it makes business sense the way the Fangraphs guys do them.
As to actual ‘actionable intelligence’, so to speak: Who’s announced they’re going to a 6-man rotation? Who looks like they’re ahead in the open competition closers jobs? Who’s announced they are going to start out with a committee? Nope.
I don’t think your characterization of “skilled” versus “mediocre” fantasy players is fair (it definitely isn’t nice). I also think you misunderstand (and mischaracterize) the purpose of these chats and what’s to be gained here. I count a number of pieces of actionable tidbits in this chat alone – namely, an esteemed fantasy writer doling out add/drop recommendations, trade valuations, process opinions and rankings. These are certainly actionable.
It’s a fantasy player’s best chance to get one-on-one feedback about their team(s) from an expert. That’s awesome. And specific to Justin’s thoughts and opinions. If you’d like to know about closer battles and 6-man rotations, you can find these facts in a number of different MLB newsfeeds, including but not limited to…MLB trade rumors, MLB.com, NBC Sports, Fantasy Pros, ESPN, Yahoo Sports, Google, etc.
These chats are designed for quick actionable hits. If the author were to go into detail about, say, an ongoing rotation battle…he’d be best served (and so would we) in doing so via a more detailed, longer Fangraphs post.
Also, if you pay attention, some of these questions yield value in the overall narrative they end up constructing. Ex: Justin likes Franmil! Now I can take action – research to see if I agree, check existing teams in light of this analysis, and boom – fantasy fun!
Agreed. Even though I find the majority of questions don’t necessarily enhance my knowledge, I find them interesting and fun… and some questions do… and also I feel like I’ve picked up a ton from reading these chats over the years. Basically, even if say 90% of this chat was not enlightening to me, the reason for that (more than any other reason) is probably that I’ve been reading these chats at FG for so many years that I’ve soaked up a ton of knowledge.
I also wonder who is actually in the chats, and I’d like to think that a casual fantasy player isn’t kicking around on Fangraphs and joining a chat. I figure the casual players are on some of the much more mainstream sites, or buying magazines, etc. Sure, some of the questions seem quite obvious in their response, but I imagine that Justin is putting them all out there to satisfy as many chat people as possible. I bet if he only stuck to the truly challenging questions these chat logs would be markedly shorter.
Also, we are all removed from whatever situation each person is going through for their team and league. I bet if I put a ‘who do I drop?’ question that I’ve been grappling with for one of my leagues in the chat, I bet I may be the only one who doesn’t ‘know’ the answer.
