With trade deadlines well in the rear-view mirror, the only way to bolster fantasy teams at this point in the season is via the waiver wire. Steven Shumansky expanded our list even further last week, and I’ve still managed to find four players — owned in 20% or fewer leagues on Yahoo! — to recommend for those of you trying to pad your power or speed numbers down the stretch.

With a million players on every roster, sometimes it’s hard to predict exactly how the playing time will be allocated. So as usual, my choices could end up being lucky to find 10 at-bats over the next week or prove to be a nice injury replacement.

I tossed out some hitters who could help a few weeks ago. Now I have some more, this time focusing on two specific needs: home runs and steals. All players are 50 percent owned or less in both Yahoo! and ESPN, with several under 10 percent for deep leagues.

Home runs

Brandon Moss ( Yahoo! 50 percent, ESPN 40 percent) – Moss is playing a lot and finally playing well for the Cardinals. He appears to be fully beyond those dark days of July, when a .204 BABIP helped him produce a 44 wRC+. ZiPS and Steamer both call for an average around .240 with five home runs the rest of the way. Moss is certainly capable of doing more in a month (he hit nine homers last May), so there’s upside too.

It’s September call-up time! Other than Javier Baez, who is actually still owned in a whopping 48% of CBS leagues, there doesn’t appear to be any players with much of a chance to make a real impact in fantasy leagues. On Friday, Adam McFadden wrote a piece in which he recommended nine players owned in less than 50 percent of Yahoo leagues. Adam’s work inspired me to do some digging of my own, and I managed to find some more widely unowned players who could give your team a serious boost down the stretch.

He’s Back!

Drew Smyly (47%) – Although he looked pretty rusty in his first start since May on Sunday, Smyly needs to be owned pretty much across the board. He was dropped in a ton of leagues when he tore his labrum, to the point where he’s available in over half of Yahoo leagues. Dropping him was understandable, as the Rays initially said he was out for the year, only to retract that statement a week later.

I managed to snag him in a 12-team mixer where he had gone unnoticed on the waiver wire. Maybe you can too.
