RosterResource Roundup: April 4-5

Below you’ll find a roundup of notable moves and roster notes from the past two days, as well as future expected moves and a Minor League Report, which includes a list of recent major league debuts and top prospect promotions. For this column, any lineup regulars, starting pitchers, or late-inning relievers are considered “notable,” meaning that middle relievers, long relievers, and bench players are excluded. You can always find a full list of updated transactions here.

RosterResource News: Last week, we moved our RosterResource pages into regular season mode and introduced a new feature that allows you to view all 30 projected lineups (vs RHP and vs LHP) on one page.

Lineup Regulars

Boston Red Sox
•SS Trevor Story left Friday’s game with a shoulder injury. It seems like he’s going to miss some time, although the severity has not yet been reported. He’ll have an MRI on Saturday.

Pablo Reyes is the most likely candidate to fill in for Story with starting center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela also an option to fill in occasionally. Romy Gonzalez and David Hamilton, both utilitymen who can play shortstop, are options to fill Story’s roster spot if he is placed on the Injured List.

Lineup Regulars

Arizona Diamondbacks
•SS Geraldo Perdomo left Wednesday’s game due to knee discomfort. He’s considered day-to-day.

Even if Perdomo misses a few games, it could give rookie Blaze Alexander a chance to show what he can do at the shortstop position. With top prospect Jordan Lawlar sidelined indefinitely after thumb surgery, the window for someone other than Perdomo to play shortstop has widened a bit.

The 24-year-old Alexander has made four starts, all against lefties, while serving as the designated three times and playing second base in his latest start. He hit his first major league homer against Carlos Rodón on Wednesday and is off to a 5-for-12 start following an impressive spring (22-for-55, 2 HR, 5 SB). He’s played mostly shortstop in the minors and is considered a good defender with an above-average throwing arm.

Lineup Regulars

Arizona Diamondbacks
•CF Alek Thomas (strained hamstring) placed on 10-Day IL. OF Jorge Barrosa recalled.

There is no timetable as of yet, but Thomas’ injury is considered somewhere between a grade 1 and grade 2 strain. Corbin Carroll played CF on Monday with Jake McCarthy taking Thomas’ lineup spot and playing RF. He was 1-for-3 in his first start of 2024.

The switch-hitting Barrosa, who hit a pinch-hit double in his first MLB at-bat against Yankees’ lefty Victor Gonzalez, will likely platoon with McCarthy.

RosterResource News: Earlier this week, we moved our RosterResource pages into regular season mode and introduced a new feature that allows you to view all 30 projected lineups (vs RHP and vs LHP) on one page.

Bullpen Report update: As you might have noticed, the late-inning reliever content here is similar to what we’ve had as part of the Bullpen Report from the past few seasons. It’s not as detailed, but it quickly summarizes the most relevant closer-related news. We will still have a Bullpen Report, but it will be a once-per-week recap beginning next Sunday evening.

Lineup Regulars

Atlanta Braves
•C Sean Murphy (strained oblique) placed on 10-Day IL.

Murphy was officially placed on the Injured List for the first time in his major league career prior to Saturday’s game. It’s a grade-1 oblique strain, which is considered the best-possible scenario. He’ll still miss at least a few weeks, though. Travis d’Arnaud started on Saturday and contributed to a 12-4 victory over the Phillies with a two-run double. Chadwick Tromp made his first big league start since last May on Sunday.

Lineup Regulars

Atlanta Braves
•C Sean Murphy (strained oblique) will be placed on 10-Day IL.

Murphy injured himself on a swing in the 7th inning of Friday’s game against the Phillies. He’s never been on the Injured List in his 4+ seasons in the majors. Chadwick Tromp will be promoted to take his spot on the roster. Travis d’Arnaud will be the primary catcher until Murphy returns.

RosterResource Roundup: March 28

Below you’ll find a roundup of notable moves and roster notes from the past day, as well as future expected moves and a Minor League Report, which includes a list of recent major league debuts and top prospect promotions. For this column, any lineup regulars, starting pitchers, or late-inning relievers are considered “notable,” meaning that middle relievers, long relievers, and bench players are excluded. Lineup Regulars

Colorado Rockies
Elehuris Montero started at DH and batted 8th vs RHP.

While Michael Toglia earned the final roster spot over Sean Bouchard, it wasn’t clear how the at-bats would be divided between Montero, Toglia, and Jake Cave. Facing Diamondbacks’ ace Zac Gallen on Opening Day, it was Montero (0-for-3) who got the start while Kris Bryant played 1B and Charlie Blackmon played RF. I’d still expect some sort of committee between Montero, Toglia, and Cave until one of them can separate themselves.

RosterResource Roundup: March 22-28

This is the debut of “RosterResource Roundup”, which will be a regular feature here at FanGraphs. As you probably know, the baseball news cycle moves quickly. My job is to pay close attention and keep all of our RosterResource content updated. Between the rosters and depth charts, playing time projections, transaction tracker, closer depth chart, injury report, and payroll pages, you can get a pretty good idea of what happened throughout the day and what’s coming next. Taking it a step further and offering context is the goal of this column.

Once the regular season begins, this roundup will include a list of notable roster moves, as well as future expected moves and a Minor League Report, which includes a list of recent major league debuts, top prospect promotions, and players who are “knocking down the door” to the majors. Any lineup regulars, starting pitchers, or late-inning relievers are considered “notable,” meaning that middle relievers, long relievers, and bench players are normally excluded. You can always find a full list of updated transactions here.

Within these roundups, I will provide information that is relevant to each team’s closing situation, including injury updates, notes from that day’s games, and “Relievers on the Rise”.  As we get deeper into the season, I’ll have features on trade candidates, rankings for next offseason’s free agents, updates on how teams and players are doing versus their pre-season projections, and much more.

For today, here is a look at each team’s most recent developments and what decisions still need to be made ahead of Opening Day.

AL EAST

Baltimore Orioles
Recent Developments:

Jackson Holliday reassigned to minors, allowing both Jordan Westburg (2B) and Ramón Urías (3B) to play on a regular basis to begin the season.
Colton Cowser made the team.
Tyler Nevin has not officially won a bench job, but he’s the last man standing after Nick Maton and Ryan McKenna were told that they would not make the Opening Day roster. All three players are out of options.
Keegan Akin won the final bullpen spot after Bryan Baker and Jonathan Heasley were optioned.

UPDATE 3/26: Tony Kemp was signed to a MLB contract. Nevin will now likely be traded or designated for assignment. UPDATE 3/28: Jacob Webb will begin the season on the Paternity List. Nick Vespi was recalled.

Decisions remaining:

Roster is set, barring any injuries or last-minute transactions.
