Bullpen Report: September 20, 2023
The 2023 version of the Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.
We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.
- Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
- Injury News
- Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
- Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
- Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.
The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads
•Yennier Cano, BAL: Three straight days. | RosterResource
Danny Coulombe and Shintaro Fujinami are the likeliest closers, with Cionel Pérez also having worked in three straight.
•Alex Lange, DET: 24 pitches on Tuesday, and three of the last four days. | RosterResource
Jason Foley’s also worked three-of-four, but with fewer pitches. If he too is unavailable, Miguel Díaz or Will Vest could close.
•Tanner Scott, MIA: Back-to-back days and four of the last five. | RosterResource
Andrew Nardi, David Robertson, and Steven Okert are the likeliest closers, with newly-claimed Matt Moore also an option if he’s active for Wednesday’s game.
•Josh Hader, SDP: Back-to-back days and three of the last four. | RosterResource
Robert Suarez and Scott Barlow are the most plausible backups for Hader.
•Kyle Finnegan, WSN: Three of the last four days; 23 pitches on Tuesday. | RosterResource
Davey Martinez tends to ride his bullpen pretty hard and Finnegan didn’t pitch Monday, so his availability is a toss-up. Hunter Harvey would close if Finnegan’s unavailable.

Outlier Saves
•Cionel Pérez, BAL | RosterResource
The O’s brought Yennier Cano in with a four-run lead to try to close out a 9-5 game against the Astros, but he was able to get just two outs, giving up a hit and a walk before setting up a key plate appearance for Yordan Alvarez. Brandon Hyde brought Pérez in, preferring the left-on-left matchup. That decision worked out, with Pérez striking out Alvarez on three pitches to end it for his second save of the year.
