Bullpen Report: September 17, 2021

NEW FEATURE ALERT! We have added an upgraded version of RosterResource’s Closer Depth Chart to FanGraphs. Read more about it here.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads

Cole Sulser, BAL: 30 pitches on Thursday. | RosterResource

Co-closer Tyler Wells should be available Friday.

Andrew Chafin, OAK: 15 pitches on Thursday; 26 pitches on Wednesday. | RosterResource

Sergio Romo, Jake Diekman, Yusmeiro Petit and Lou Trivino are all very plausible substitute closers.

Mychal Givens, CIN: 25 pitches on Thursday; eight pitches on Wednesday. | RosterResource

Michael Lorenzen and Lucas Sims have both worked back-to-back days as well. If those two and Givens aren’t available, Luis Cessa, Amir Garrett and Justin Wilson would seem to be the likeliest fill-in closers.

Mark Melancon, SDP: Three straight days; 25 pitches on Thursday. | RosterResource

Probably not ideal for the Padres to be without their closer heading into a crucial series against the Cardinals, but they will be nonetheless. Pierce Johnson, Daniel Hudson and Emilio Pagán all have heavy workloads of late as well, which could leave Tim Hill, Craig Stammen or even Dinelson Lamet closing on Friday.

Don’t know that I would have taken the committee box off of Oakland. Chafin had a messy save on Wednesday and came in in the 8th yesterday in a 4-2 game. It’s not even like they brought him to face the top of the order or a bunch of lefties, it was to face 4-5-6 and L-S-R (& more importantly, none of them were Sal Perez). They were saving Romo for the save (though they added 3 runs in the top of the 9th to make it a non-save situation)
