Notable Workloads
•Raisel Iglesias, ATL: Three straight days; 24 pitches on Tuesday. | RosterResource
A.J. Minter’s also worked three straight, so in all likelihood the Braves will be without their top two relievers on Wednesday. That would leave Kirby Yates and Pierce Johnson as the best bets to close.
•Justin Lawrence, COL: 26 pitches on Tuesday; 8 pitches on Monday. | RosterResource
Tyler Kinley is the likeliest closer, even if Lawrence is available for a third straight day.
•Bryan Shaw, CHW: 28 pitches on Tuesday. | RosterResource
Co-closer Gregory Santos should be available after just 13 pitches on Tuesday.
•Craig Kimbrel, PHI: Three of the last four days; 20 pitches on Tuesday. | RosterResource
José Alvarado’s also worked three-of-four including 40 pitches the last two days, so a save chance could fall to Seranthony Domínguez, Gregory Soto, or Jeff Hoffman.
Injury News
•Kenley Jansen, BOS: Exited with illness on Tuesday. | RosterResource
We’ve got no idea how long Jansen will be out, though he couldn’t have been too ill if he was out on the mound. If he’s out for any length of time, Chris Martin would probably close.
Outlier Saves
•Nick Ramirez, NYY | RosterResource
In game 2 of a doubleheader against the Red Sox, the Yankees essentially used their B bullpen, having used Tommy Kahnle, Wandy Peralta, and Clay Holmes in game one. McAllister, Misiewicz, Bowman, and Ramirez aren’t exactly Betances, Miller, and Chapman, but they got the job done, each pitching a scoreless inning. For Ramirez, it was his first career save.
•Brad Hand, ATL | RosterResource
Raisel Iglesias blew his save chance in the ninth but was able to hunker down and get the Braves to extra innings despite having runners on first and second with nobody out once the game was tied, setting the stage for a Hand save. He was quite sharp, with his sweeper inducing a ground ball (advancing the zombie runner to second) before a strikeout and fly ball left him there to end the game. It was Hand’s first save of the year but the 132nd of his journeyman career.
•Buck Farmer, CIN | RosterResource
Alexis Díaz got the Reds to extras by pitching a scoreless bottom of the ninth, leaving Farmer to try to protect a one-run lead against his former Tigers team. The zombie runner is always tough to contend with, but Farmer benefited from his infield playing in, with Jonathan India cutting down the tying run at home to keep the lead intact. Farmer earned his third save of the season and has been a mainstay in the Reds pen, with a 3.50 ERA in 65 appearances.
