Bullpen Report: March 27, 2014
A few brief notes out of the bullpens on Thursday:
-The St. Louis Cardinals’ inked veteran right-hander David Aardsma on Wednesday to compete for a spot out of the bullpen. The Cards are looking to carry five right-handers in the ‘pen to open the regular season, and with three of the five claimed by Carlos Martinez, Pat Neshek and Trevor Rosenthal, Aardsma appears to be battling three others for the last two spots. The fantasy-relevant (to some of us) odd-man out here could potentially be Seth Maness, who finished tied with Randy Choate for the second-most holds among Cardinal arms in twenty-thirteen. Maness’ 5-2 record, 2.32 ERA and 15 holds last season may not be enough to overshadow the righty’s struggles in Cactus League play. Southpaws Randy Choate and Kevin Siegrist along with flame throwing righty, Carlos Martinez, figure to be logging the majority of the holds in St. Louis this year.
-The Chicago White Sox were awarded 28-year-old Javy Guerra off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers today. Considering the veteran right-hander is out of options, he’ll likely make the White Sox Opening Day roster and be the final player on their 40-man. While Nate Jones and Matt Lindstrom appear to be battling it out for the ninth-inning nod, Guerra is a fair option with closing experience should one or both of them struggle. Guerra owns a career 2.90 ERA (3.30 FIP) with 29 saves and a 19.5% K% (10.5 BB%) in 102.1 IP.
–Koji Uehara notched his first save in one of the Red Sox final tune-ups this Spring. He fanned two of the three batters he faced en route to a Boston 4-1 victory over Minnesota to keep his ERA a perfect 0.00 in Grapefruit League play. Twins’ relievers Jared Burton and Glen Perkins surrendered three earned runs on five hits and a walk over two frames in the losing effort.
Closer Grid:

I follow the CWS closely. At this point, due to injuries and the information coming from Venture, you should seriously consider listing their pen as red. It’s highly likely they will be a closer-by-committee for at least the first three-to-five weeks of the season.
Don’t disagree here, but we’ll have everything squared away next week once the rosters are set.
The role of Kevin Gausman needs to be further discussed because he’s a wasted arm if he’s not a closer or starter. And JJ Hoover has been horrendous this spring. Will he really get the nod in the first game?
Teams that make decisions based on spring stats deserve what they get.
So, I’ve got a $17 Feliz in my dynasty league. Is he such a lost cause that I cut him and take the $9.50 cap hit for this year, but open up the other $9.50 for Sunday’s auction?
that sounds miserable
I guess it depends on how your league works. I am in a dynasty league and traded Tyler Glasnow for Feliz over the winter expecting to get the Rangers closer (thank god I also picked up Soria when waivers opened). If you have a spot to roster him for the time being – wait and see how Soria does. Who knows, it might be tough for Texas to have two potential closers – maybe they trade one away to help mend their starting pitching issues. But if you don’t have the roster spot – might as well cut him.
Regarding Colorado’s bullpen, I drafted Adam Ottavino in my Scoresheet league and like him a lot more than Belisle. Ottavino is younger and can likely be counted on for more innings and a better strikeout rate. He also had a better spring, whatever that might be worth.
I’m curious how anyone out there would rank this group of setup guys. I’m in a league that has actual setup positions, so in those slots holds are worth twice as much as saves.
T. Clippard (seems like the clear cut #1 to me)
C. Martinez
C. Allen
D. Farquhar
S. Marshall
S. Kelley (seems like the clear cut #5 to me)
that order seems about right
Javy Guerra outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte. That was quick.
