Outlier Saves
•Alex Young, CIN | RosterResource
Closer Alexis Díaz had pitched three of four days and four of six before getting Saturday’s game off, and David Bell decided another one was warranted. Ian Gibaut got the save opportunity in the ninth but blew his chance, handing the ball to Young with a three-run lead in the tenth. Young let the zombie runner score but nothing else, earning his first career save.
Young’s proving to be one of the best minor league signings of the offseason, pitching to a 2.83 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 28.2 innings of work.
•Andrew Nardi, MIA | RosterResource
A.J. Puk had gone back-to-back games and three of four, which left him unavailable on Sunday. Tanner Scott was in the same boat, which led to Andrew Nardi getting the save chance in the ninth. Nardi gave up a leadoff double but nothing else, striking out two.
Nardi’s now on a run of 20 appearances without an earned run, and Sunday’s save was his second of the season. His ERA is now down to 2.27.
•Yunior Marte, PHI | RosterResource
The Phillies have two closers, but were down to one with Craig Kimbrel throwing 26 pitches on Saturday. The other, José Alvarado, pitched the eighth, which made way for Marte’s first career save in the ninth, which he achieved by striking out the side on 15 pitches. The up-and-down reliever had a rough start to his season but has been unscored upon in ten of his last 11 appearances.

Losing A Grip
•Alex Lange, DET | RosterResource
Lange was sitting pretty at the beginning of the month, with a 1.11 ERA, looking like a good bet to make the All-Star team. Unfortunately, with Sunday’s performance (no outs recorded, three runs) in the books, that’s ballooned to 4.13, with ten runs allowed in his last four innings of work.
Jason Foley bailed Lange out with a two-inning save, though his 28 pitches might leave him unavailable on Monday. The Tigers might have to turn to Will Vest, José Cisnero or Chasen Shreve for a save chance, before letting Foley have the majority of save opps starting Tuesday.

If a pitcher is listed in the Losing a Grip section, are they qualified for a yellow hue on the chart? Seems like Lange might at least have that, unless you think he’s already in the red…
