Bullpen Report: July 12, 2022

The 2022 version of Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads

Scott Barlow, KCR: 19 pitches on Monday. | Roster Resource

A double-header in Kansas City on Monday has left the Royals bullpen spent. Both Taylor Clarke (19 pitches) and Dylan Coleman (21 pitches) were utilized in the Royals’ two-game sweep of the Tigers. Barlow, Clarke, and Josh Staumont (IL) are the only currently rostered Royals relievers to record a save this season. Barlow threw in both games of yesterday’s double-header and Clarke and Coleman have thrown in back-to-back days. It’s possible we’ll see an unfamiliar face in a save situation if one comes up on Tuesday.

Brett Martin, TEX: 22 pitches on Monday. | Roster Resource

“Reliever On The Rise” Brett Martin has recorded three saves in four days. As he likely needs rest after Monday’s performance, Matt Moore or Dennis Santana are likely to fill in for a save opportunity if one comes up.

Edwin Díaz, NYM: 11 pitches on Monday, three days in a row. | Roster Resource

Adam Ottavino is also on “High Usage Alert” after a 20-pitch hold on Monday. That leaves Seth Lugo as the most likely reliever to get a save opportunity on Tuesday.

Taylor Rogers, SDP: 25 pitches on Monday. | Roster Resource

Luis García is the most rested and most likely to fill in for Rogers if he is unavailable on Tuesday.

Outlier Saves

Yerry De Los Santos, PIT | Roster Resource

With David Bednar and Will Crowe likely unavailable on Monday after a lot of usage in the past few days, Chris Stratton was a likely option to get a save opportunity in a close game. The Pirates had a sizeable lead in the ninth however and it’s possible manager Derek Shelton wanted to spread the workload around a bit more. That left De Los Santos in the game in the ninth.

The 24-year-old Middle Reliever was listed as the Pirates’ 46th best prospect in 2021 and recorded the last out in the eighth inning and came back out for the ninth with a four-run lead against the Marlins on Monday. After walking the lead-off man in the ninth, De Los Santos struck out Brian Anderson, Bryan De La Cruz, and Miguel Rojas to record his third major-league save of the season. He is essentially a two-pitch pitcher with a sinker/slider combination. Though he throws a four-seamer at times, its usage is only at 1%. During his time at single-A in 2019, De Los Santos worked up to a 13.14 K/9 in 50 innings and in 2022 he’s kept that ratio high in both AAA (11.49) and the majors (10.69). While he’s never had a particularly high pedigree, De Los Santos is showing some promise and one has to look no further than his dominant four-strikeout performance on Monday night. He will be a young arm in the Pirates bullpen to keep an eye on for sure.

Barring a trade or injury Rogers and Doval are about as stable as can be. They are far and away the best relievers in their pens.

Yeah, Doval just started showing up in yellow a few days ago with no explanation. Has there been anything, other than his scuffling in his past few appearances, to indicate that he’s in any sort of danger?
