Bullpen Report: August 16, 2021

NEW FEATURE ALERT! We have added an upgraded version of RosterResource’s Closer Depth Chart to FanGraphs. Read more about it here.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads

Raisel Iglesias, LAA: 28 pitches on Sunday. | RosterResource

After another save of more than three outs for Iglesias (he needed four), he’s probably unavailable on Monday. Mike Mayers or Steve Cishek could fill in.

JT Chargois, TBR: 40 pitches on Sunday. | RosterResource
Ryan Sherriff, TBR:
13 pitches on Sunday; 28 pitches on Saturday. | RosterResource

The ever-fluid Rays’ closing situation will really be without three options on Monday, in all likelihood, as Collin McHugh is serving as the opener for Josh Fleming. Andrew Kittredge and Matt Wisler are the two top options for a save.

Dylan Floro, MIA: 28 pitches on Sunday; 17 pitches on Saturday. | RosterResource

Anthony Bass has worked back-to-back days as well, totaling 34 pitches. That leaves Anthony Bender, who didn’t pitch Sunday, as the likeliest to be available on Monday.

Outlier Saves

Wandy Peralta, NYY | RosterResource

Two days, two outlier saves for the Yankees. Albert Abreu bailed out Zack Britton in the tenth inning on Saturday, and Peralta had to do the same for Lucas Luetge an inning earlier on Sunday. Luetge didn’t enter in a save opportunity, but created one for Peralta in allowing three of the four batters he faced to reach base. Peralta allowed an infield single to Tim Anderson to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but he induced a double-play on the very next pitch to Cesar Hernandez to end the game.

For Peralta, Sunday’s was his fourth save of the season and second since being acquired from the Giants back in May. Peralta’s pitched better as a Yankee, with his ERA lowered by almost a run and a half since the trade, and an increase in grounder rate has helped Peralta lower his BABIP considerably. He’s not in the main mix for saves (that’d be Jonathan Loaisiga, Chad Green and Britton) while Aroldis Chapman is on the IL, but he’s up there in the pecking order.

Both Antone and Nick Anderson pitched clean innings over the weekend. Not sure if Antone would step in and snag the closer role, but I do think Anderson will (at least the majority of opportunities) once he’s back.
