Bullpen Report: April 10, 2022

The 2022 version of Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads

Aroldis Chapman, NYY: 12 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. | RosterResource

Jonathan Loáisiga should be in line for a save opportunity on Sunday if Chapman needs the day off. Loáisiga threw 17 pitches on Friday but was off on Saturday.

Andrew Kittredge, TBR: 17 pitches on Saturday, back-t0-back days. | RosterResource

Recording the win on Friday and the save on Saturday, Kittredge is likely to have the day off on Sunday. That leaves opportunities for two other committee members, JT Chargois and Brooks Raley 레일리. J.P. Feyereisen is also likely to have a day off after working back-to-back days on Friday and Saturday, recording the hold in both outings.

Jordan Romano, TOR: 8 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. | RosterResource

Romano’s efficiency has been impressive as he was under 20 pitches on Friday and under 10 on Saturday, but this early in the season we should expect a day off after back-to-back days. Next in line Yimi García has also worked back-t0-back days, so it’s likely that Tim Mayza (six pitches on Saturday) could get an opportunity.

Anthony Bender, MIA: 10 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. | RosterResource

The listed closer in Miami was given the chance to close on Saturday after blowing the save on Friday. Bender is likely to get a day off on Sunday and both Richard Bleier and Cole Sulser have worked back-t0-back days. That leaves the most likely rested candidate for a save opportunity on Sunday to be Anthony Bass.

Corey Knebel, PHI: 18 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. | RosterResource

José Alvarado (15 pitches on Saturday) or Seranthony Domínguez could get an opportunity to close out the game on Sunday if Knebel needs a day off.

Jake McGee, SFG: 11 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. | RosterResource

The Giants bullpen has looked shaky to start the season. Camilo Doval blew a save on Friday and McGee recorded the loss on Saturday. Tyler Rogers is likely to work in a save situation on Sunday if both Doval and McGee need rest.

Taylor Rogers, SDP: 10 pitches on Saturday, back-to-back days. | RosterResource

The newly acquired Rogers seems to have been inserted directly into the closer role, recording the save on both Friday and Saturday night. His next-in-line Pierce Johnson threw 23 pitches on Saturday and recorded the hold. If Rogers needs rest on Sunday, that leaves the door open for Dinelson Lamet or Drew Pomeranz to get a save opportunity.

Injury News

Lucas Sims, CIN: progressing well (elbow), IL10 | Roster Resource

Sims is projected to be the closer upon his return from the IL and projection systems (those listed here on FanGraphs) have him recording over 15 saves this season. It’s likely that he has flown under the radar in some fantasy leagues given the injury. Unless a Reds reliever overly impresses while Sims is out, there’s a good chance he takes over the role upon return, but take caution! Sim’s missed 47 days on the IL in 2021 with a right elbow sprain.

Outlier Saves

Aaron Bummer, CHW | Roster Resource

Liam Hendriks, Aaron Bummer, and Kendall Graveman threw on Friday night. Hendriks ended up with the lion’s share at 33 pitches. Bummer was seemingly the most prepared to pitch back-to-back nights, and thus, got the save opportunity with a three-run lead in Detroit on Saturday. He gave up two hits, but struck out three to secure his first save of the season. There weren’t too many times last season that Hendriks did not get the save, only five saves went to other relievers for the White Sox in 2021, so don’t expect Bummer to be getting the opportunity on a regular basis.

Committee Clarity

Daniel Bard, COL | Roster Resource

Things did not go well for Alex Colomé, who was the expected closer in Colorado, in his first appearance for the Rockies on Saturday. While we shouldn’t make too much out of one outing early in the season, the Rockies righty gave up four hits and a run while recording only two outs in the eighth. He lost the lead as the Dodgers tied the game on a Mookie Betts RBI single. Carlos Estévez came in to get the final out in the eighth. Daniel Bard, on the other hand, looked solid in the ninth inning on Saturday when he struck out the side after the Rockies re-took the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Colomé recorded 17 saves last season with the Twins to Bard’s 20 with the Rockies, but neither reliever confidently held down the full-time closer role in 2021. It will be a situation to keep a close eye on in Colorado.

•Deigo Castillo, SEA | Roster Resource

At first, it looked like Drew Steckenrider and Paul Sewald would share opportunities in a closer committee, but Castillo is likely to be in the mix as well after recording the save on Saturday. Castillo has 28 career saves, 16 of which came in 2021, and is certainly a great option for the Mariners. Most projection systems have Castillo recording only four saves this season, but he is one to keep an eye on.

Losing a Grip

•None

Surprised there was no mention of Tyler Duffey blowing the save for MIN before Diego Castillo came in to record the save for SEA. I guess there’s no “clarity” after that outing, but wondering what your thoughts are on that bullpen after this first bit of information.
