The transcript is posted as well as a plea for votes.
Meanwhile, go vote in the #MyWalkUpSong contest. I’ve entered Dies Irae as performed by Epica. Can you just imagine the stadium-wide chills as Aaron Judge walks to the plate with the bases loaded and this blasting on the mega-speakers? Ahh, it’s so good!
I’m opposed by some sort of thought piece which requires a paragraph of explanation.
3:51 |
Brad Johnson: Hey folks, we’ll get started in a few moments.
3:54 |
Matt Parrington: What was Byron Buxton’s WAR beyond the first decimal point?
3:54 |
Brad Johnson: Hey Louie, it was 9.
3:55 |
Bryzzohtani 🙁: Chris Davis or Logan Morrison? Pts league
3:55 |
Brad Johnson: With Davis a little banged up and possibly falling off a cliff, I’m leaning LoMo.
3:56 |
Brad Johnson: They’re both pretty similar assets – late round 30 HR options. Davis will likely have the better lineup role and closer to guaranteed play due to his terrible contract. I think LoMo is slightly more talented overall.
3:56 |
John Doe: How late would Moustaskas be able to sign and still be available for Opening Day for the team that signs him?
3:57 |
Brad Johnson: Honestly, I imagine he can be ready for Opening Day with like 3 or 5 days advance notice. It’s not like he’s sitting at home watching TV. That said, you should expect reduced production in April and extra rest time if that comes to pass.
3:58 |
Phil: I’m allowed 7 keepers in a 10 team league with $300 available. Mind letting me know who you would keep?
3:58 |
Brad Johnson: Mike Trout, Jose Altuve, Trea Turner, Nolan Arenado, Bryce Harper, and a couple aces.
3:58 |
Erik: I’m running a league for a bunch of friends who have probably three seasons of fantasy baseball between them. What settings would you recommend for a league full of new players to keep it fun for everybody?
3:59 |
Brad Johnson: I think you should stick to 5×5 so they have the option to read some one-size-fits-all advice – if they want to
3:59 |
Hi: 18 team H2H points league, keep $20 G.Cole or $10 Trevor Bauer?
4:00 |
Brad Johnson: Oh…probably close to a coin flip. Would need a lot more context to give an answer. Be mindful of your opportunity costs. Like, how valuable is that extra $10. League is deep enough that I imagine it could be the difference between starting an actual regular and a backup
4:01 |
Vegan Man!: Hey Brad, how do you approach SP in the draft in a league with 180 start limit? Thanks!
4:01 |
Brad Johnson: I try to go acey as possible
4:02 |
Brad Johnson: If the league is relatively shallow – 12 teams or under, I’d probably pop 4-6 aces in the first 8 or 9 rounds.
4:02 |
Vegan Man!: How do you approach SP in a league with a weekly 10 start limit? Thanks!
4:02 |
Brad Johnson: This doesn’t really change my approach.
4:02 |
Edison: Jose Martinez worth rostering for roto?
4:03 |
Brad Johnson: Depends on league depth. Not a bad late flier for 12 team deep roster and up.
4:03 |
Eric: How much playing time do you think Moran gets this year, and what kind of line could you see him producing?
4:04 |
Brad Johnson: I’ll guestimate 450 PA with .275/.335/.455
4:04 |
Matt Parrington: 3.59?!?!
4:04 |
Brad Johnson: I made that up. Pretty sure (not positive) it rounds, therefore 3.54 or lower.
4:04 |
Mitch: In a 5×5 (obp and qs instead of avg and wins) dynasty league, would you rather have Albies or C. Martinez?
4:05 |
Brad Johnson: Albies. Though I definitely prefer CMart for this year. I’m assuming it’s a pretty deep dynasty and not a 10-team keeper.
4:05 |
Vegan Man!: Better keeper this year / going forward: Freeman or Bellinger? Thank you!
4:05 |
Brad Johnson: Freeman now, Bellinger long term.
4:06 |
Brad Johnson: Bellinger is 22. Freeman is 28.
4:06 |
Breezy: H2H league, 5×5 + OBP/OPS and L/OBA, keeping Goldschmidt and Bellinger, but my third is a toss up mess of Kimbrel, Starling Marte, or Gallo
4:06 |
Brad Johnson: Easy Gallo.
4:06 |
Joe: K Marte at $6 or Galvis at $8 in NL only 5×5?
4:06 |
Brad Johnson: Marte. Even with the news Ahmed will probably start at SS
4:06 |
Vegan Man!: Thoughts on Villar as a MIF option this year? Thanks!
4:07 |
Brad Johnson: I like him as a late flier. Lots of rebound potential. Had some value last year even while struggling. Don’t trust the Brewers to not say fuck it and re-sign Walker though.
4:07 |
Brian: price, wood, salazar, duffy, verlander, quintana, clevinger, teheran, gausman, peacock, alex reyes, shoemaker, sonny gray. enough depth in a 16 team dynasty even with the amount of risk the group carries?
4:08 |
Brad Johnson: I think that’ll hold up in a deep format. You can always look to improve though.
4:08 |
Vegan Man!: Do you think Robles will (eventually) hit for enough power to be a 1st round talent in a dynasty points league? Thanks!
4:09 |
Brad Johnson: Yea, I think his combination of age and pedigree will push him to borderline 1st round value in a dynasty. Granted, I’m not saying he’d be a redraft 1st rounder. For now, consider him next Byron Buxton.
4:09 |
Guest: Can you rate my bench in a 12-team league? I’m feeling pretty good, seems like there’s a lot of upside and versatility with a good floor: Dickerson, Villar, Owings, Morales, Maybin, Moran, Altherr
4:09 |
Brad Johnson: Seems like a good group to me.
4:10 |
Brad Johnson: I’m not a big Owings fan anymore, but you might as well see what portion of the 2B/SS/3B reps fall to him.
4:10 |
Eric: Hearing that Tanner Roark has simplified his delivery. Can he get back to being a top 40 / 50 starter?
4:10 |
Brad Johnson: Not sure his delivery was holding him back. We’ll see I guess. He’s a command and control guy but sometimes he’s closer to average and plus
4:11 |
Jim-Bob: Odds we see a Santana / Hernandez / Crawford / Kingery infield in Philly before June 1? People seem to think Hernandez is just holding the 2B job until Kingery is ready, but Hernandez a good player and Franco is not. What am I missing?
4:12 |
Brad Johnson: Neither Kingery nor Hernandez really have the arm for third. I agree that they’re not just going to dump Hernandez just because Kingery is progressing. Really reminiscent of the Polanco/Utley era in Philly.
4:12 |
Harold: Keeper strategy: I usually keep all hitters if possible but pitching seems scarcer than before. Should I mix in more pitching?
I’m in a 10 team league where we keep 9 with a draft round cost. My 5 definite keepers and cost are: Judge (16th), Hoskings(18th), Acuna(24th), Trout(1st), Lindor(3rd).
Help me choose 4 more out of these options: Pham(18th), Benintendi(8th), Nola(12th), Iglesias(17th), Weaver(22nd), Carlos Martinez (7th), deGrom (5th) & Vizcaino (24th)
4:13 |
Brad Johnson: I’ll say definitely Pham and Nola. None of the other values scream must-keep to me in a thin format. Maybe CMart and Weaver?
4:13 |
Erik: How many stars is too many on a stars and scrubs team? To put it another way, if more than half of my roster is $1 guys in an Ottoneu league, am I screwed?
4:13 |
Brad Johnson: Nah, I routinely roster 15 or more $1 players in FG Staff 2. I’ve won 3 in a row. The quality of your stars and their health is the key to the puzzle.
4:13 |
Schilling and Pence: Curious about your thoughts about Nicky Delmonico and Nick Williams for this season.
4:15 |
Brad Johnson: I think Delmonico had a fluky and under-scouted debut. The ZiPS line looks about right to me – .243/.315/.442, whole heap of Ks, 13 HR in 309 PA (i.e. 25 HR pace)
4:16 |
Oddball Herrera: Position eligibility aside, whose future would you rather have in a dynasty league – Moncada or Acuna? They seem remarkably similar
4:16 |
Brad Johnson: Strong preference for Acuna, but that’s just me. Not sure there’s any science in that preference. I like his swing more though.
4:17 |
Phil: 10 team league, $300, choose 7 keepers. Harper (39), judge (11), Darvish (11), Shaw (7), Luke Weaver (8), Gio Gonzalez (8), Alex wood (7), Conforto (10), Gallo (7), odor (15), Moncada (8), Torres (8)
4:18 |
Brad Johnson: My votes are for not Odor, Moncada, Torres, or Gio.
4:19 |
Brad Johnson: I think a few are obvious – Harp, Judge, Darvish, and Gallo. That last 3 can be any of the remainders.
4:20 |
Brad Johnson: As for letting the prospects go… yea, they’re trendy names, but 10-team is so shallow that you can rely on established players and still get the same kind of keeper upside.
4:20 |
Brad Johnson: if you must have one, it’s Moncada.
4:20 |
Brad Johnson: ok, I’ve gotten to 4:00 and only skipped a couple…
4:20 |
Brad Johnson: I’ll go to about 4:05 then jump forward
4:21 |
Can’t read good: Trade Clevinger for LeMahieu and Shane Greene even if I already have Albies and Chris Taylor?
4:21 |
Brad Johnson: Do you desperately need saves? I like the valuation, but the swap doesn’t seem to help you.
4:21 |
Brad Johnson: If it’s a very deep league, you can bet on re-selling a 2B. If it’s shallow, you’ll probably just choke on 2B
4:22 |
Oddball Herrera: Is Hoskins really a slam dunk to be more valuable than Joey Gallo in 2018? Their ADPs are miles apart
4:22 |
Brad Johnson: No. Gallo is very underpriced.
4:22 |
Brad Johnson: Hoskins is slightly overpriced
4:22 |
Brad Johnson: They should both be in the 60-80 range.
4:22 |
Eli: SBR pts Q: If I have a strong outfield (Hoskins/Springer/Blackmon/Mancini/Reddick/winker/altherr) and weak 2B (walker or Asdrubal profiling as my starter, kingery in the wings), what would be an appropriate 2B target to trade Eloy for? Or is the upside so great that I should hold? Team is rock solid otherwise.
4:23 |
Brad Johnson: I like to start big and scale back. Could you try Blackmon and Eloy for Altuve?
4:23 |
Brad Johnson: Alternatively, you could buy Lowrie for peanuts and keep Eloy
4:24 |
Donny: If you have a pick near the end of a 12 team 5X5 league and a chance to grab two of the four SP aces, do you do it?
4:24 |
Brad Johnson: I’d have to have a reason. Not opposed though.
4:24 |
E: Do you know when the yearly rotograph positional rankings will be finished our posted?
4:24 |
Brad Johnson: I do not, that’s Paul’s territory. They’re rounding up rankings right now. I’ve opted out this year because…
4:25 |
Big Tuna: I’m likely to miss on the top 4 arms; who’s the worst ace you’d feel comfortable having on your staff this season? Meaning, how long can I comfortably wait to draft my first SP?
4:25 |
Brad Johnson: I really recommend getting in there by mid 3rd round. A syndergaard, Severino, Strasburg, Greinke, etc.
4:26 |
Quick Ben: What’s your general auction strategy and $ split? I’m thinking specifically of a 12 tm obp h2h league. Thanks!
4:26 |
Brad Johnson: I tend to go much heavier on ace SP than most. Range anywhere from 30/70 to 60/40 hitter/SP. Depends on prices and other factors.
4:27 |
Tony: Hey Brad! Thanks for the chat. 5×5 OBP instead of average, 12 teams. Who are you targeting with pick 11 and 14 (not looking for pitching with these picks)
4:27 |
Brad Johnson: Honestly, there are so many good players at that spot in the draft. I’m observing no consensus after Turner/Arenado at #3/4
4:28 |
Brad Johnson: So take who you like of Harper, Bryant, Stanton, Judge, Ramirez, Machado, Correa, Blackmon, Lindor, etc etc.
4:28 |
Brad Johnson: A bunch more fit in there.
4:28 |
jd: is it crazy to draft nick senzel over shohei ohtani (SP) in my prospect draft?
4:28 |
Brad Johnson: Nope, Ohtani is a pitcher
4:28 |
Brad Johnson: never crazy to prefer a hitter
4:29 |
Brad Johnson: Plus Ohtani already has the elbow red flag
4:29 |
Smitty: W Myers and a decent prospect a reasonable return for J Turner (LAD) in a dynasty league (H2H, OBP)? Need an OF, have depth at 3B.
4:29 |
Brad Johnson: Yes, quite reasonable. Feel free to share the prospect in the future 🙂
4:29 |
Jon: Richards or Taillon if draft cost is similar? This year only
4:29 |
Brad Johnson: That’s a push for me
4:30 |
Brad Johnson: A similar location within The Glob
4:30 |
Tony: What percentage of these questions have enough information for you to provide a valid response?
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: I’ll estimate 30%, but 80% provide just enough for me to feel like my advice is useful. And if you write paragraphs explaining everything in detail, I’m likely to skip it
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: it’s a fine line you, the reader, must walk
4:31 |
Big Tuna: Is Matt Harvey “back”?
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: Cautious optimism is called for
4:31 |
Big Tuna: Maybe I didn’t watch enough Twins games last year, but how real is Eddie Rosario?
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: Eh, don’t get caught in the helium. He’s a solid player.
4:32 |
Gary Sanchez: Ottoneu FGPTS- Cut $1 Headley for $2 Hunter Greene? Currently probably a top 4 team.
4:32 |
Brad Johnson: Unless you’re desperate for sub-replacement 3B PA, yes
4:32 |
Spencer: What kind of season do you see Nick Williams having? ETA for Senzel?
4:32 |
Brad Johnson: I figure we see Senzel by mid-May
4:33 |
Brad Johnson: Williams is extremely volatile. He may range from barely played to low-end Adam Jones season
4:33 |
Brad Johnson: Williams actually has speed too, but he doesn’t steal bases. So don’t expect that dimension
4:33 |
Lou Sassole: Follow-up to the Moustakas question: how are you treating the FA starters yet to sign in fantasy? How much tune-up time will Arrieta, Lynn, etc. need with no (or limited) Spring Training? Reduce projected stats by a factor of x%?
4:34 |
Brad Johnson: For pitchers, they’re more likely to just be put on the DL while they ramp up. So I’m not docking their production, only their play time
4:34 |
Big Tuna: Where do you slot Andrew Miller along the RP rankings in a Saves league?
4:34 |
Brad Johnson: I turn to him somewhere shortly after Familia. He’s usually long gone by then.
4:35 |
Jim-Bob: Am I crazy for thinking that Lincecum could be closing games for Texas very early in the season?
4:35 |
Brad Johnson: Nope, it’s within the realm of possibility. He’s only just arrived in camp so you’ll have to be patient. Claudio is still the odds on favorite, although he’s perhaps better as a multi-inning guy.
4:36 |
Brad Johnson: For reference, I took Lincecum around pick 870 in a dynasty draft. I took Diekman a couple rounds earlier.
4:36 |
Brad Johnson: I fully expect to cut them both, but that projects as 15% of a closer right now.
4:36 |
Joe: Nick Williams or Aaron Altherr?
4:36 |
Brad Johnson: Williams is likely to get a much longer look
4:37 |
Brad Johnson: Altherr is more of a second division starter/first division backup. Phillies don’t seem to mind pushing him into that prematurely. They’ll never be upset when injuries force them to use him as a regular
4:38 |
Brad Johnson: Williams needs an opportunity to a). prove he’s part of the future of that club and/or b). build trade value so they can swap him for an ace when they take aim at Bryce Harper.
4:38 |
Brad Johnson: Altherr is never going to carry an offer for an ace the way Williams potentially could
4:39 |
The Next Rivero: Who are your top closers in waiting to become closers by the summer?
4:39 |
Brad Johnson: It’s a pretty thin group at the moment. A lot of really strong sitting closers. The weakest ones have crap behind them
4:39 |
Brad Johnson: Let me reference some lists…
4:41 |
Brad Johnson: Ryan Madson, Koda Glover, Edubray Ramos, A.J. Ramos, Barraclough, Minter, Cishek, Edwards, Norris, Dyson, Ottavino, Hirano, Nate Jones, Reed, Casilla, a Ranger, Bedrosian
4:41 |
Brad Johnson: that’s arranged by division
4:41 |
Vic: Is it possible Tatis Jr is a full time Top 50 MLBer beginning in 2019?
4:42 |
Brad Johnson: I won’t say it’s impossible. Probably sub-1%
4:42 |
Moltar: Now that he’s officially a Royal, is Jay worth a late round pick in a 14tm OBP league?
4:42 |
Brad Johnson: Sure, why not. Super boring volume
4:43 |
Vegan Man!: If I target SP early and often, what position(s) can I afford to hold off on – 1B? 3B? OF? Thanks!
4:43 |
Brad Johnson: There is no position scarcity.
4:43 |
Brad Johnson: You can ignore positions entirely unless you’re in a deep league – then you have to pay attention to make sure your rivals aren’t overdrafting something.
4:43 |
Joe: Is D Sanatana at $16 a better keeper in an NL only than D Peralta at $9
4:44 |
Rob: What’s a realistic expectation for Hosmer out in San Diego? Nothing close to last year’s output I’d expect, right?
4:44 |
Brad Johnson: I’m guessing something like his 2015 line.
4:44 |
Eloy: When do I get called up?
4:44 |
Brad Johnson: after Super 2 cutoff or even September
4:44 |
Erik: Shouldn’t definite non-closers like Miller really be ranked as starters? He’s vaguely Rich Hill-ish, isn’t he? With better numbers in fewer innings.
4:45 |
Brad Johnson: That’s an interesting thought. I find it more natural to comp him to relievers though since you’re still projecting 5 or 7 saves
4:45 |
Bob Villar: Braun or Lamb this year?
4:45 |
Brad Johnson: Braun. Close to a push though
4:45 |
Vegan Man!: Keep 3 of the following in a 14 team dynasty points league: Carlos Gonzalez, Hicks, Yandy Diaz, Felipe Rivero, Doolittle? Thanks!
4:46 |
Brad Johnson: The closers and… Hicks?
4:46 |
Brad Johnson: Much as I like Yandy, not him. He has to change too much to become a fantasy asset
4:46 |
Brad Johnson: Cargo needs to sign with somebody as a starter…
4:46 |
Brad Johnson: Hicks could lose his job though pretty suddenly
4:47 |
Hotlanta: 5×5 12 team league ($260 auction) with small bench, how much are you paying for the top tier guys (Trout, Altuve, Arenado, Kershaw, Stanton, etc.)? Would it be terrible to spend $150 (or more) on 3 elite guys and hae $5/player the rest of the way?
4:47 |
Brad Johnson: It’s an option. I tend to prefer a little more top end depth.
4:47 |
Brad Johnson: Totally on board with stars and scrubs in general. It’s the only strategy these days.
4:47 |
Oddball Herrera: Not a lot of buzz around Ian Happ this offseason. The guy can hit 30HR, and he has plausible room for improvement in his K rate. If he leads off add in more SBs and runs. What’s not to like other than the chances Maddon screws around with his PT?
4:49 |
Brad Johnson: Well, I think you said it. How confident are you that he gets more than 450 PA? Maddon says Baez is getting 600+ which means Zobrist is in the OF crowd most days. How often is the defensively superior Almora going to start in CF?
4:49 |
Matt: Interesting that you have two Nats on your closers-in-waiting list. Is that because you view Doolittle as an injury risk? Because I don’t see any way he loses his job based on performance.
4:49 |
Brad Johnson: Yes, recurring shoulder injury
4:50 |
Brad Johnson: I love Doolittle. Also worth noting he’s a lefty and there’s a bias against them as top RP
4:50 |
Brad Johnson: Doesn’t seem to be much of an issue in this case, but it’s in the back of my mind.
4:50 |
Brad Johnson: Glover has the best cutter I’ve ever seen – Mariano and Jansen included
4:50 |
Brad Johnson: Madson was just as good as Doolittle last year – and righty
4:50 |
MI: Am I wrong in thinking Nomar Mazara is going to breakout?
4:51 |
Brad Johnson: Eventually, probably. This year, maybe.
4:51 |
Joe: better to have 2 stud SP and a bunch of tier 4/5 guys or 1 stud SP and a bunch of tier 2/3/4 guys? NL only 5×5
4:51 |
Brad Johnson: I think I’d take the pair in an Only
4:51 |
Matt: I was under the impression that there was no positional scarcity . . . except at catcher. Would you not agree?
4:51 |
Brad Johnson: And I tend not to worry too much about C
4:52 |
Vegan Man!: When would you be comfortable drafting Conforto in a 12 teamer? Thanks!
4:52 |
Brad Johnson: I’m not comfortable drafting him at a place where he’s actually available
4:52 |
Brad Johnson: Not enough precedent for how players recover from his injury
4:52 |
Bryzzohtani 🙁: Were you profitable in DFS last year? Still plan on doing daily write ups?
4:53 |
Brad Johnson: I was not, although I salvaged the second half of the year which tends to be the hardest time period to win. I’ll still be doing the daily grind. Maybe more too. We’ll see.
4:53 |
Nick: I just got Goldy for $47 in a Ottoneu FGPts league? Bargain?
4:53 |
Brad Johnson: Sounds lovely to me
4:54 |
Val: Is there a date when signing Arietta will no longer cost a team draft picks and international money? There was in the previous CBA, but I can’t find it now.
4:54 |
Brad Johnson: I’m not actually sure because it’s not explicitly stated. Not sure anybody knows. In the past, the drop dead was the actual draft. But it’s possible the penalty carries over now.
4:54 |
Joe: $19 too much for Doolittle in an NL only?
4:55 |
Brad Johnson: Probably not. Values get very distorted in Onlys
4:55 |
Erik: I’m more likely to draft Miller when I’ve got weak starters than when I have weak relievers (since by that point there are still strong relievers remaining). I think there’s something there but I haven’t fully investigated it yet. Could be a fun article somehow.
4:55 |
Brad Johnson: re: comparing top relievers like Miller to SP instead of RP
4:55 |
Brad Johnson: Interesting perspective. I’ll let it soak in my brain for a bit and see if it’s worth an article
4:56 |
Nick: How worried should I be about Arrieta still being unemployed?
4:56 |
Brad Johnson: It’s getting close to the point where he won’t be on the Opening Day roster. May already be past that point
4:56 |
Brad Johnson: So yes, worried
4:56 |
Ancient Mariner: Odd that Treinen and Greene hold their jobs for the year?
4:56 |
Brad Johnson: 50% for Treinen, 35% Greene.
4:57 |
Brad Johnson: I should note, even Jansen or Kimbrel is like an 80%.
4:57 |
I’m a Strawberry: Im in an extemely savvy league and Albies is ranked around 170 in yahoo. I’m thinking if I want him I’m going to have to grab him in the 9th or 10th round. 12 team h2h, keep 8 forever league…missing link is 2nd base. Do I reach or explore other options?
4:58 |
Brad Johnson: Don’t be afraid to take somebody who’s better now. He’s not a lock to have that keeper value
4:58 |
Brad Johnson: If you can pop a Murphy, do it.
4:58 |
Carl: How many PA’s you think JD gets this year in Boston? You think DH’ing helps him stay healthly?
4:58 |
Brad Johnson: All of them, and yes
4:58 |
Adam: Matt Chapman or Ryon Healy as a $1 AL only CI keeper? standard 5X5
4:58 |
Brad Johnson: Easy Chapman for me
4:58 |
scotty: what do yu think the chances are of Greybar Torres sticking with the NYYY big club??
4:59 |
Brad Johnson: To start the year? Low. Pretty likely he’ll get 300+ PA in my opinion
4:59 |
Brad Johnson: If he hadn’t been injured last year, he’d be on the Opening Day roster
4:59 |
Guest: Never played Yahoo before – shallow 12 team SP/SP/RP/RP/P/P/P/P no MI/CI etc. What’s your recommendation for drafting in a league this style?
5:00 |
Brad Johnson: Don’t be afraid to focus on pitchers beginning in the early rounds. Make sure you get a big bat or two, but you’ll find a flood of position players available late.
5:00 |
Brad Johnson: the pitchers actually dry up
5:00 |
Brad Johnson: so it’s good to lock ’em down early
5:00 |
Jason C.: What are your thoughts on RP in a SV and HD league? Are they valued exactly the same whether they are a set up guy or a closer all other stats equal?

Brad Johnson: Closers close more games than setup men hold
5:02 |
Brad Johnson: So if it’s SVs + Hlds, then closers are superior. If they’re separate categories, then you have to somehow roster both. I tend to load up on saves early with a few guys who could inherit a closer role. Then in the second half, I stream a ton of holds.
5:02 |
Brad Johnson: unless you have a huge bench, it’s hard to roster both types of relievers at the same time
5:02 |
Brad Johnson: oh, also trade the closers after you accrue a huge lead
5:02 |
Matt: Tips for drafting in NFBC no transactions leagues?
5:03 |
Brad Johnson: Don’t get lost on upside. You need a lot of high floor and volume too
5:03 |
The final boss: Favorite DL stashes early in the season?
5:03 |
Brad Johnson: Julio Urias, Dustin Pedroia?
5:03 |
Brad Johnson: Honestly, I’m not that up on who’s a DL stash right now. I don’t explicitly stash them now that my DL is permanently overfilled.
5:04 |
Brad Johnson: Alex Reyes is a biggie
5:05 |
Nolan: Is this the year Delino Deshields finally gets a full season in, and leads the league in steals? Not that the AL is THAT hard to lead in steals, but still.
5:05 |
Brad Johnson: There’s a chance. I have a feeling he’ll stall out around 500 PA
5:05 |
BigBop: Any chance Luis Urias is the Padres’ everyday 2B this year??
5:05 |
Brad Johnson: Pretty close to zero
5:05 |
Bob Villar: I just traded Cole and Stroman for Carrasco. Am I a genius?
5:06 |
Brad Johnson: I’m gonna go with no. Could work though. They’re all injury prone and volatile in some way.
5:07 |
Brad Johnson: Carrasco is obviously the best of the bunch although Cole could outperform him in Houston.
5:07 |
KilleBrews: M. Andujar have a chance to have 12 team mixed value this year?
5:07 |
Brad Johnson: Yes. A chance. His best opportunity is to keep mashing in Spring Training and then never stop.
5:07 |
Price Enforcer: I got caught price enforcing on Knebel which led to my taking Rivero and Bradley. Really didn’t research closers. Regression candidates or legit?
5:08 |
Brad Johnson: Mostly legit, any extremely good performance is going to come with some regression expectation – even if the guy does it 5 years in a row.
5:08 |
Dylan: Do you think Ozuna can repeat in St. Louis this year? His track record doesn’t have me feeling too great, but … what do you think? Did he peak last year, or will we see him repeat for a few years?
5:08 |
Brad Johnson: I think that was peak Ozuna. He’ll be more good than great in my opinion
5:09 |
Brad Johnson: Could hold those gains though. Would just bet on some regression.
5:09 |
Joel: In a 14 teamer 6×5 (added xbhs) with $300 budget and 6 bench spots (22 total). Assuming they go around standard price, who are some players you would make sure to get?
5:10 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t like that approach, but I would really go after big boppers with the xbh’s added
5:10 |
Brad Johnson: Locking in on specific players is a good way to get bad values. Instead, try to take a price enforcement role and be happy with what falls to you
5:10 |
Brad Johnson: Do make sure you get some big bats though
5:11 |
JD Martin: is there any chance Collin McHugh turns into a Devenski-style reliever this year (SP eligible with nice rate stats and holds)?
5:11 |
Brad Johnson: I can’t say no when you phrase it like this. Unlikely, I think.
5:11 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t see him playing up in relief the way Devenski does
5:11 |
Positional Scarcity: Do you think there actually is positional scarcity in a CI/MI/5 OF league?
5:12 |
Brad Johnson: No. OF might be a little shallower, especially if you have 2 UTIL, but that’s mitigated by there being more new OFers.
5:12 |
Vegan Man!: How do you approach pitching prospects in a dynasty league? Feels like if I can get solid MLB SP’s in a trade, I should pull the trigger (volatility, injury risk, etc.) Thoughts?
5:13 |
Brad Johnson: My 20 team, 45 player dynasty league roster includes 9 prospects. None of them are pitchers. They don’t hold value well.
5:14 |
Brad Johnson: While my rivals were drafting 19-year-olds, I did take bench shares of Leake, Karns, Eovaldi, McCarthy, Mengden, and Williams, all of whom I consider “like” pitching prospects except actually veterans.
5:14 |
Erlich Bachman: Any back-end SPs who have shown improved velo thus far in Spring Training to warrant optimism? Last year it was Shelby Miller, now it looks like Matt Harvey might have found it again.
And any SPs who have lost a tick since last season?
5:15 |
Brad Johnson: I’m not up on that yet, I like to let a couple outings pass before worrying about velo
5:15 |
Vegan Man!: with deGrom behind schedule, would you keep Carrasco or Greinke over him at this point? Thanks!
5:15 |
Brad Johnson: I have Grienke ahead of deGrom. Pretty close to a toss up for the other pair.
5:16 |
Ontilt1377: Chase Anderson outlook? #2 upside?
5:16 |
Brad Johnson: I drafted Anderson today as my third SP, I have him projected as a #4 real world guy with some upside. I like his pitchability
5:16 |
seth: How to build a roster around a super cheap Gallo–Blackmon, Yelich, JTurner, and Reddick enough to do it?
5:17 |
Brad Johnson: That should balance. But now you need SBs
5:17 |
Mike: Trade Devers for Robbie Ray in a keeper league?
5:17 |
Brad Johnson: If it’s not a deep one and you need the innings.
5:17 |
Brad Johnson: Ok, I’m going to wrap things up. Thanks for playing
5:17 |
tim: If reaching for a prospect in keeper league, is the consensus to pick either Ohtani or Acuna?
5:18 |
Brad Johnson: Pretty much. I think Senzel can be in the conversation.
5:18 |
Brad Johnson: Robles too.
5:18 |
Jason C.: RE RP in SV and HD league. It’s a separate category and it’s a H2H categories league with daily line ups and huge bench.
5:18 |
Brad Johnson: Ah, I think you’re probably punting one of them then
5:18 |
Jiggy: Who are some guys that you think are consistently being undervalued that I should be saving spots for in auction draft?
5:18 |
Brad Johnson: None of the auctions I’ve done to this point are typical
5:19 |
Brad Johnson: Can’t really advise beyond saying you should draft for value, not specific players who are usually valuable.
5:19 |
tb.25: 16 team, 25 keeper league. Sale and Jake Lamb for Bryant, Lamet and Taijuan walker?
5:19 |
Brad Johnson: I’ll take Bryant long term
5:20 |
Inside Joke That Brad Remembered: Do you think Bellinger has a good chance to fall off like Puig?
5:21 |
Brad Johnson: No. Totally different hitting profiles. Everybody is blinded by Puig’s athleticism. He’s raw talent is wasted. Bellinger seemingly maximizes his tools.
5:21 |
Brad Johnson: Ok, it’s time. See ya next week.
Not sure if you read this, Brad, but I had a follow up to your saves+holds answer.
“Closers close more games than setup men hold
5:02 So if it’s SVs + Hlds, then closers are superior. ”
Looking at the leaderboards, the top 30 leaders in holds had between 20-30 holds whereas the top 30 leaders in saves had between 47 and 14 saves. Wouldn’t this make holds more valuable since they are more plentiful and easier to obtain?
Maybe in an 18 or 20 team setting. A typical contending roster in a normal-sized format is going to have 2 or more top 15 CL.
Note: that’s not the same as saying they’ll draft 2 of the top 15 ranked closers.
