Roto Riteup: July 10, 2015

Today’s Roto Riteup was written while District 9 played in the background. It’s one of my favorite original screenplays (technically it was adapted from a short, but director of the short was the same as the movie, Neill Blomkamp) and definitely one of my best films from 2009.

On today’s agenda:
1. Starling Marte’s injury status
2. Bad news for Steven Matz
3. Matt Holliday’s potential return
4. Streaming Pitching Options

Rather than stick with soccer, instead I’ll shift to something we can all agree on: music! Yesterday morning the users over at Absolute Punk released their top 50 albums from 2000-15 (warning: language). As the website name would suggest, the list is largely dominated by the punk and pop-punk scene, however other genres make appearances as well.

On today’s agenda:
1. Alex Gordon’s injury
2. Scott Kazmir and Jason Hammel leave respective starts
3. Consider John Jaso

Yesterday the USMNT narrowly edged out Honduras by a 2-1 score. Both the defense — specifically the center and right side — looked shaky, though the 4-4-2 formation (with a diamond midfield) in the attack at least showed decent signs of life. I might be overly critical here, but that looked and felt like a pretty lucky three points.

On today’s agenda:
1. Cesar Hernandez, starting second baseman
2. Jake Odorizzi’s rehab progresses
3. Good news for Gerardo Parra owners
4. Streaming Pitching Options

On today’s agenda:

Roto Riteup: July 2, 2015

I’m not sure what the baseball equivalent is when a player scores what amounts to a game-ending own goal in stoppage time in the World Cup semifinals, but I hope to never see it. Maybe walking the bases loaded then a walk-off balk? Just a brutal finish in the England/Japan game.

On today’s agenda:
1. Welcome to the show, Miguel Sano
2. Neil Walker’s big day
3. Aaron Judge watch
4. Streaming Pitching Options

Almost Mid-season Check In: 10 Bold Predictions

I’ve never done a mid-season check in on my bold predictions, but I’ve also never gotten a single one right, so there’s that. Without further self-deprecation, let’s take a look at where I stand on my preseason predictions.

1. Josh Donaldson will score 120 runs (or post 130 RBI)
Originally I had this pegged specifically for 120 runs, but the comment section told me Donaldson would be hitting fifth most of the season, despite my original thoughts. Since I’m a pretty easy going guy, I decided to make this a flexible post and included the 130 RBI possibility. The commenters were correct for the first week, but then after a bit of moving around, Donaldson has settled in at the two hole. At this point the Blue Jays have played 77 games and Donaldson has scored 67 runs and tallied 48 RBIs. Good thing I made this an “or” rather than an “and” post, as I’m about 50 percent confident Donaldson will actually score 120 runs. Given that neither Edwin Encarnacion or Jose Bautista are showing any sign of slowing down at ages 32 and 34 respectively, I’m optimistic I can get this one correct. Read the rest of this entry »
