Roto Riteup: September 14, 2016

A reminder: While “look good, feel good” is a nice axiom, you do not, in fact, have to look good to be good.

It’s about that time. With under three weeks to go, you’re likely pushing up against position limits in some formats, specifically innings limits. The bar for streaming options may be a little higher in those leagues, as everything on a per-inning basis matters most. In other formats, the bar may be even lower as you scramble for counting stats without fear of a cap. It makes it a little tougher to offer blanket advice given how different everyone’s situations may be, but we try nonetheless – just make sure to contextualize any news or advice for your own situation.

I’ve had the pleasure of spending some time with Eno Sarris here in Toronto the last two days. Last night, he was part of a Pitch Talks with Jeff Passan and a bunch of terrific local beat guys, and the night prior he rolled through after I did a Hoop Talks event. It’s been great – Eno’s helped me a ton from a professional standpoint, and few writers can blend humor, storytelling ability, and just ridiculously sharp analysis the way he does. So, shout out to Eno. And if you’re in Toronto, BarHop at 5pm before the Jays game tonight.

If you weren’t in full September/pennant baseball mode yet, Yankees-Blue Jays last night likely got you there. A weird, fun, long, back-and-forth game with high stakes that ended on this:

As much as that stings from my perspective – the Jays are tied with the Red Sox atop the AL East and just a game up on Baltimore – it was a heck of a game, and felt like a pace-setter for the next three or four weeks. Giddy up.

It’s September, which means things are about to get a little weirder on the fantasy front. That brings positives and negatives – there may be a few more streaming options and extra bats in the free agent bin, but some of those options will be far shakier, and playing time as a whole will now be distributed across a greater number of players. Team success doesn’t always matter in fantasy team building, except when it comes down to September and competitive teams are the easiest to project playing time for.

Anyway, can we all agree that September should never again be limited to just four games on a day’s slate? This is me, looking for baseball to watch as I got home from a four-day Baltimore road trip:

Yesterday was tough. And there’s not a ton to talk about, so let’s narrow in on what September may bring.

When you try to leave work 15 minutes early on a Friday but run into your boss on the way out:

Just kidding, you’re out of here on time today, no problem. Happy Friday.

The Royals have won nine games in a row. The Royals are suddenly just four games out of a wild card spot. I don’t think the Royals are particularly good, but their pixie magic from the last couple of years clearly hasn’t worn off yet. Let this be a lesson, I guess, that your fantasy season isn’t over yet – I hope your bad team still has a late push in it, friend.

Mark Trumbo’s last seven hits are all home runs. He hasn’t had a non-home run hit since Aug. 6. I’m not sure there’s ever been a more Mark Trumbo stat than that. The 30-year-old slugger now has a league-leading 38 home runs on the year, a new career-high.
