Eric Hosmer is a Bit Too Expensive for My Taste

That’s two good years and one bad year for Eric Hosmer. The one bad year, which was really his first full season in the majors, still wasn’t too bad from a fantasy standpoint as he still managed to hit 14 home runs and steal 16 bases. Hosmer is essentially a Paul Goldschmidt-lite, due to his ability to contribute in the steals category while many of his counterpoints give nothing in that department.

Don’t Look Over Jed Lowrie

Currently, Jed Lowrie is going as the 16th shortstop or 17th second baseman in Yahoo! leagues. This is the third hitter on a playoff team who played a full season last year with a high average and solid power production, and as I previously alluded to, is eligible at two of the notoriously weakest hitting positions in the game.

Betting on an Albert Pujols Rebound

It certainly looks like he is in a decline phase. Last year was his least productive season on a per plate appearance rate and also in aggregate overall value. He didn’t reach 100 games played as he battled plantar fasciitis all season, he didn’t hit over 20 home runs, and he didn’t even hit .260.

Don’t Look Past Martin Prado on Draft Day

Let’s start this off by saying that the biggest aberration in terms of fantasy production that Martin Prado will probably ever have is his 2012 season. I would put a good deal of money on him never stealing 17+ bases again in his life.

Nick Swisher Sure Does Look Undervalued

With an average draft position of 231 in Yahoo! leagues, Nick Swisher is absolutely undervalued in fantasy. Yes he plays at the best producing position and yes he does not provide value with his legs to support his bat, but he is without a doubt in my mind being undervalued on draft day.

Anthony Rizzo, is the Risk Worth the Potential Reward?

The draw in Anthony Rizzo is his very impressive power, but a career .174 ISO in over 1200 plate appearances is at least somewhat worrisome when you are looking to draft Rizzo and hoping the power shows at the MLB level.

At the end of last season, J.P. Breen covered Rizzo and what to make of him. Breen did a great job of detailing the struggles Rizzo had against lefties and the fact that he had previously been fine against southpaws. With a 115 wRC+ against righties and a 72 wRC+ against lefties, any improvement at all against lefties would be a huge help to his fantasy value.

Inexpensive Homers and Steals: Darin Ruf and Eric Young

The two following players are more well-known than the average guy being spoken about in a fantasy context these days, but they are still owned in fewer than 30% of Yahoo leagues and could help you as specialists down the stretch.

White Sox Call Ups: Marcus Semien and Erik Johnson

Marcus Semien

Marcus Semien has been promoted to the major leagues as a September call up, and he is one of the more interesting prospects I have been following this season. I own Semien in a dynasty league and although I am out of contention, I am eager to see what he can do against major league pitching in the next months’ worth of play.

Kyle Seager, an Excellent Keeper

This is now two seasons of Kyle Seager we have under our belts and the two seasons look very similar with modest improvements in some key areas, which has pushed Seager from being a slightly above average major league hitter to a very solid fantasy player.

Holding Onto Alex Wood in Long Term Leagues

Owners of Alex Wood in long term leagues will have some type of dilemma on their hands entering next year. There are so many types of keeper leagues that it is difficult to write specifically toward any type of league set up, but generally I notice keeper leagues allow free agent pick ups to be kept in round (x).
