The Unofficial September DL List Continues

We’re going to piggyback a post from early September done by Jeff Zimmerman that lists those that have been injured in September but are not on the DL. With rosters expanding to the full 40 here in the final month, teams no longer need to put players on the DL to open up a roster spot for a new arrival. However, for those still active  here ate the end and are streaming players to the bitter end, it can be tough to sift through those who have been banged up enough that they won’t make another appearance this season. Here’s an update…

Ben Sheets, SP ATL — Word was that he was going to pitch out of the pen down the stretch, but he still hasn’t made an appearance. With the Braves clinching, he still may not.

Randy Wolf, SP BAL — Hard to imagine anyone really trying to stream him in still, but Wolf was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his left elbow and is likely headed for Tommy John surgery. You won’t see him again this year…or probably next.

David Ortiz, DH BOS — He tried to make it back, playing one game in late August, but it was a no-go. He’s officially been shut down for the season.

Ryan Ludwick, OF CIN — He’s now missed six games with a groin injury and with the Reds clinching their spot in the playoffs, it is very likely that he’ll be out for the reminder of the regular season while he prepares to be ready for the NLDS.

Ubaldo Jimenez, SP CLE — He’s officially been shut down for the remainder of the season with an ankle sprain. Sorry, no more hoping that your opposition streams him in.

Ramon Hernandez, C COL — Surgery to repair a ruptured hamstring has officially marked the end of his season.

Troy Tulowitzki, SS COL — Give him points for trying here, but Tulo still is not back from the groin injury that has sidelined him for over 100 straight games. Hard to believe he’s going to play here in the final week.

Eric Young, OF COL — He’s been working on making it back from his oblique injury, but the Rockies have already announced that he won’t return this season.

J.D. Martinez, OF HOU — He just had surgery to remove the hook of the hamate bone in his wrist, so he’s officially done for the year.

Chad Billingsley, SP LAD — The Dodger actually put him on the 60-day DL and he may need Tommy John surgery so this is the last you’ll see of him for a while.

Adam Kennedy, 3B LAD — Not that he was seeing much time, but the groin injury he’s been dealing with has marked the end of his 2012.

Giancarlo Stanton, OF MIA — He’s now missed eight straight games with an oblique strain and while the Marlins are still calling him day to day, the chances of him returning to the lineup are pretty slim. You can hold out hope for the weekend, but if he’s not back by then, he’s not coming back this season.

Justin Ruggiano, OF MIA — Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen told reporters that he does not see Ruggiano making it back from his shoulder injury this season. The shutdown isn’t official, but it may as well be.

Mark Teixeira, 1B NYY — He ran the bases the other day but there is still no return date set. They won’t rush him back with the playoffs looming so if you were hoping to see him in the final week, you may want to brace yourself for some disappointment.

Brett Anderson, SP OAK — The team has already declared his season over with a strained oblique. There is still hope for him to return for the playoffs.

Neil Walker, 2B PIT — The bad back has had him out for most of the last two months and the Pirates are thinking about just shutting him down for the final week.

Carlos Quentin, OF SD — Due to problems in his surgically-repaired knee, Quentin has played just once since September 10. There’s a remote chance he returns this season, but he won’t even be able to string together a few games.

Andrew Cashner, SP SD — He re-aggravated his lat injury last week so the Padres have decided to just shut him down for the remainder of the season.

Kevin Millwood, SP SEA — He was scratched from his last start with a continued shoulder problem and the outlook for pitching again this season is not very good.

David Freese, 3B STL — He’s been dealing with a sprained ankle recently and while he was seen hitting off a tee on Wednesday, he still hasn;t run on it yet. Given his history with ankle surgeries, the prospect of him retuning isn’t looking very good.

Lance Berkman, 1B STL — Knee surgery on September 11 has put the Big Puma down for the remainder of 2012.

Jeff Niemann, SP TB — He threw off flat ground recently and the Rays are still holding out hope that he’ll squeeze out one more start before the end of the season.

Yu Darvish, SP TEX — He was scratched from his last start with neck stiffness and when manager Ron Washington discussed him returning to the mound this coming Sunday, he was sure to add in “tentatively scheduled” to return.

J.A. Happ, SP TOR — The lefty made one appearance in September but a foot injury put him on the shelf immediately after. The Jays actually placed him on the 60-day DL, ending his season.
