1. Happy Holliday
Happy July Fourth. Eno says we’re off for today, but I’ll still supply some rapid-fire DFS picks in a truncated version of the Grind. With the Cardinals opposite mediocre southpaw Jon Niese, it’s an excellent day to celebrate the holiday by using Matt Holliday.
2. The Daily Grind Invitational and Leaderboard
Kingtrout is en fuego. He narrowly edged me out for the win on Saturday. I foolishly went for a fade of Evan Gattis versus Chris Sale rather than sticking with my first pick of Robinson Chirinos. It was a costly choice both in the TDG Invite and my two GPP lineups. Although he was the second lowest scoring player on his roster, Russell Martin was the difference between first and second for kingtrout. The leaderboard is updated.
Let’s go with a free contest today on FanDuel. I’ve chosen the early afternoon time slot.
3. Daily DFS
The Brewers and Nationals have an 11:05am start time. That’s silly. Most west coast fans will still be sleep.
Early: Nine games are early. One of my favorite picks, Kyle Hendricks, tops the price chart. He’s in a semi-slump over his last five starts. Four of them were still solid with one 12 strikeout performance standing out from the others. The “slump” component refers to his innings pitched – he’s failed to reach the seven inning threshold since June 2. Hendricks should receive run support versus Cody Reed and the Reds.
Aside from Carlos Martinez hosting the Pirates, my other picks are much further down the price list. CC Sabathia and Jake Peavy both cost $6,900 on FanDuel. Sabathia is visiting U.S. Cellular Field – a difficult hitters park. After a long streak of reliability, Sabathia has turned in consecutive terrible outings. The price is right to roll the dice.
Since late May, Peavy has pitched like normal Peavy. The upside is relative tepid – think 45 FanDuel points – with a roster breaking downside. He’s opposed by the powered down version of the Rockies lineup at AT&T Park. As with Sabathia, the price is right for the risk.
Stack Targets: Joel de la Cruz, Jerad Eickhoff, Nick Martinez, Kendall Graveman, Tyler Anderson, Reed, Ricky Nolasco, Niese, Peavy, Sabathia, Wade Miley, James Shields, Tom Koehler
Late: The small four game night crew has more pitchers with which to hang your hat. Danny Salazar gets a rematch against the Tigers. The last round went to Los Tigres. Salazar is quite pricey.
For $1,500 less (on FD), you can own Aaron Sanchez’s start against the mediocre Royals offense. The Jays bullpen was heavily taxed the last few days so the club ought to let Sanchez work deep into the outing.
Precocious phenom Julio Urias has a tough matchup opposite the Orioles. He’s capped at around six innings which kills his ceiling. The cheapest pitcher, Archie Bradley, has the best situation. He’s hosting the righty-prone Padres. San Diego is starting BP pitcher Luis Perdomo. Bradley should receive plenty of run support with a 10 strikeout ceiling. Of course, the floor could hurt.
Stack Targets: Perdomo, Yovani Gallardo, Daniel Norris
4. SaberSim Observations
Max Scherzer is the top name today, but he doesn’t count for us. Salazar, Matt Harvey, Urias, CMart, and Sanchez round out the actual top five. Stacks include the Red Sox, Diamondbacks, Blue Jays, Twins, and Cardinals. Holliday is actually the 11th ranked hitter today, further validating my note in section one.
5. The Factor Grid
The table below indicates which stadiums have the best conditions for hitters today. The color coding is a classic stoplight where green equals go for hitters. The weather conditions are from SI Weather’s home run app. A 10/10 means great atmospheric conditions for home runs. A 1/10 means lousy atmospheric conditions.
Watch for rogue rain clouds.
This post is not brought to you by any DFS platform. The current author is quite pleased to present a DFS ad free environment.

Happy 4th to you and yours, Brad!
And wait, I’m confused, you both recommend CC but also stack targets against? Which one is it? 🙂
Either. I do suggest that you select one or the other rather than both!
hah! I will do both, just because! 😉 my regular fantasy squad is mediocre at best, so why the hey not.
whelp…good thing I released CC…the feel good story is regressing.
