RotoGraphs Battles The Hardball Times… Squared
FanGraphs vs. The Hardball Times. And you can take part.
The RotoGraphs squad is taking on a group from The Hardball Times in a fantasy showdown. Our own Howard Bender, Chris Benson, Mike Podhorzer, Dan Wade, Brandon Warne, and David Wiers took part in an auction last night and they’ll be battling six foes from The Hardball Times for fantasy glory… and a $600 prize that will go to the charity of the winner’s choice. Most likely, the cash will end up going to the Leukemia Society, because, most likely, we’re going to win.
We’ll be writing about this from time to time to keep you up to date and discuss issues that come up, but there’s a twist — you can get involved if you like.
Thanks to Derek Carty’s new venture, Fantasy Squared, you can vote on the likely winners and losers. You can even chime in on trades. Here’s a little ditty by Carty on his baby:
Fantasy Squared is a market-style game where users buy and sell shares of events that happen in an underlying fantasy league—which team will win, who got the better end of a trade, etc. Do you think you know more than your favorite FanGraphs or Hardball Times experts? In Fantasy Squared, you now have the chance to prove it!

Once you get it, you can join the FG v THT fantasy squared league here.
Just make sure you vote for us. The winners. Because we’re going to win.

Brett Lawrie $22
Pablo Sandoval $23
Am I the only person who doesn’t think Lawrie is worth this much?
steals, steals, steals. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lawrie outearns Pablo by a good margin if he is healthy all year and sits in the middle of that lineup (which is going to generate a lot more counting stats than the Giants).
But, given realistic expectations, they are comparable in R/HR/RBI, whereas Pablo should hit for a higher AVG, but Lawrie will nab 15-20 more steals. So three categories even… one category advantage for Pablo, one for Lawrie. Yes, they are worth a similar amount based on projected value.
