Quick Hits

Matt Manning was placed on the IL with a fractured foot after injuring it on this play:

This will likely end his season. Manning pitched well in limited time posting a 3.58 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP with 50 strikeouts in 78 innings, but missed a lot of time due to injuries. He should be healthy in time for spring training.

Adolis Garcia was placed on the IL with a patellar tendon strain in his right knee. There is no timetable for his return.

Matt Vierling left Thursday’s game with an elbow injury. He reportedly has a lot of swelling in the elbow according to manager AJ Hinch and is not expected to play on Friday. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Luis Rengifo left Thursday’s game with a bicep strain after injuring himself in the on deck circle. This was a weird situation as no one could figure out what happened in real time. Manager Phil Nevin stated after the game that the injury “does not look good,” but he is expected to undergo further testing on Friday. Consider him day-to-day for now, but this sounds like it will end up with an IL stint.

Mookie Betts left Thursday’s game with a foot injury. He was seen on crutches following the game, but x-rays were reportedly negative. The injury was sustained in his first at bat and he managed to play through the pain until the eighth inning. This sounds precautionary, so consider him day-to-day for now.

Various News and Notes
Jordan Lawlar went 1-for-4 in his Major League debut on Thursday.

Lawlar is the Diamondbacks top prospect and a top 10 prospect in baseball. He has 20 home runs and 36 stolen bases with a .278/.378/.496 triple slash between AA and AAA this season. Lawlar profiles as a prospect with average to above average power and plus speed that struggles with contact. He has made gains this year to lower his strikeout rate and he has made gains defensively and could be a plus defender at short. He is a pick up in most redraft leagues if he can get every day playing time.

With Adolis Garcia hitting the IL, Evan Carter is expected to make his Major League debut on Friday. Carter has hit 13 home runs and 26 stolen bases between AA and AAA this season. Carter is a hit tool and speed prospect that has below average power, but he has maintained double digit walk rates throughout all of his stays in the minors. He is an average defender in the outfield. Carter could be a valuable source of OBP and stolen bases the rest of the way, but he doesn’t have the upside of other top prospects that have been called up recently.

Ryan Pepiot threw seven scoreless innings versus the Marlins allowing one hit and no walks while striking out three in the victory on Thursday.

Pepiot was fantastic especially with his changeup that had a 33% whiff rate in the outing. Pepiot has been mostly a two pitch guy in the Majors though he does have a slider that he mixes in occasionally. He should have a spot in the Dodgers rotation the rest of the way which is a valuable place to be pitching.

Pitcher for Today: Christopher Sanchez vs MIA

Tough slate for the lesser rostered guys, but Sanchez has pitched well and gets a Miami team I am not necessarily afraid of.

High Risk Options: Paul Blackburn at TEX, Reese Olson vs CHW, Tanner Houck vs CLE.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Michael King vs MIL

King has been fantastic since entering the rotation and has a nice matchup versus the Brewers.

High Risk Options: Zack Thompson at CIN, Jake Irvin vs LAD.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”
