Sleeper and the Bust DK Contest

On most Tuesday’s and Friday’s and some other days, Paul Sporer and I will be doing a $5 draftkings game for anyone that is interested. Will add a link once available.

Quick Hits

Sonny Gray left Monday’s start with an apparent hamstring issue. He apparently has been dealing with it for a little bit. His velocity was down 1.7 mph which was an alarming sign, but it appears it was not an arm issue. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Sandy Leon left with knee inflammation. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Trevor Rogers will miss the rest of the season with a lat strain. This caps off what has been a truly bust of a season from one of the hottest names in draft season. Rogers had been pitching well since returning from the IL, so there is some hope he can be what many thought he could be next year without costing nearly as much.

Various News and Notes

Nolan Gorman was optioned to AAA on Monday. This is a bit surprising as he is a top prospect but he has struggled as of late and the Cardinals are trying to wrap up the division. Gorman hit .226/.300/.420 with fourteen home runs and a stolen base this year in 313 plate appearances with a 32.9% strikeout rate. The strikeouts and lack of contact continue to be an issue for Gorman, who clearly has a ton of power when he can tap into it. He should be an interesting late round target next season. Juan Yepez was recalled to take his spot on the roster and is an interesting pickup the rest of the way.

Michael Toglia went 3-for-4 with two triples and a stolen base in the loss to the Giants on Monday.

Toglia had a ton of pedigree as a prospect as a first round pick in 2019, but has struggled with strikeouts at every level thus far. There is a ton of power in the bat and hitting in Colorado is nice, but if he continues to strikeout at a 30+% clip, he may not be worth the huge upside that is in the bat. He is at home this week and on the road the rest of the season, so he is a short term streamer for now.

Carlos Santana went 2-for-5 with two home runs including a grand slam in the victory over the Angels.

Santana is who he is at this point of his career, but he is hitting .257 with seven home runs since 9/9 and he plays just about every day if you need a hitting streamer, especially in OBP leagues.

Josh Naylor went 2-for-4 with a home run in the victory over the Twins.

Naylor has quietly been really good this season, hitting .256/.316/.447 with 18 home runs and five stolen bases in just 450 plate appearances. He has maintained a 15.6% strikeout rate and a 89.3% zone contact rate as well this season which is pretty impressive when you pair it with an 89th percentile max exit velocity. He is a small tweak in launch angle away from having a breakout. He will be a fun target next season in deeper formats.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today:  Austin Voth vs DET

This is a bit risky if you are win seeking, but Voth has pitched really well in Baltimore and this is about as good of a matchup as you can get.

High Risk Options: Brayan Bello at CIN, Zack Greinke vs MIN, Aaron Civale at CHW, Adrian Sampson 샘슨 at MIA, Michael Grove vs ARI.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Matt Manning at BAL

Manning has pitched well as of late and Baltimore has been a great place to pitch this year.

High Risk Options: Roansy Contreras at NY, Drew Smyly at MIA, Bailey Ober at KC, Dane Dunning vs LAA.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from the recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”
