Closer Chaos

Chris Martin pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Rangers on Monday to register the save for the Red Sox.

Martin should be the closer for as long as Kenley Jansen is on the IL and is worth picking up in any format where you need saves.

Quick Hits

Salvador Perez was placed on the IL with a concussion. This could end his season which makes him droppable in formats where you can’t reserve him or place him on the IL.

Tanner Bibee was placed on the IL with hip inflammation. This will end his season.

Harrison Bader was placed on the IL with a groin strain. This is likely to end his season. The Reds also designated Hunter Renfroe for assignment.

Giovanny Gallegos was placed on the IL with a shoulder injury. This will end his season.

Carlos Correa left Monday’s game with a foot issue. Correa recently disclosed he has played much of the season with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Various News and Notes

José Butto threw six innings on Monday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk while striking out six in the no-decision versus the Marlins.

Since joining the rotation for the Mets, Butto has been great, throwing three straight outings in which he has gone at least five innings and not allowed more than two runs while registering at least five strikeouts in each start. Butto doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but he has a complete arsenal and good command. His two remaining starts are against the Phillies which makes him a risky play the rest of the way, but he could be a cheap end of the rotation arm in deeper leagues heading into 2024.

Mike Clevinger threw a complete game versus the Nationals, allowing one run on six hits and no walks while striking out seven in the victory on Monday.

Clevinger came within one out of shutout before giving up this home run to Dominic Smith:

Clevinger has pitched very well since the All-Star Break, throwing 61 innings with a 2.95 ERA with 55 strikeouts. Clevinger has a mutual option with the White Sox at the end of the season, it remains to be seen if he will stay in Chicago or hit the open market.

Luis Campusano went 3-for-5 with a home run in the victory over the Rockies on Monday.

Campusano has been fantastic for the Padres, hitting .307/.344/.487 with seven home runs in 160 plate appearances. He has made fantastic zone contact and has just a 10% swinging strike rate. He is a former top prospect that has a good hit tool and nice pop. He could be a sneaky catcher target as he should be the main guy in San Diego heading into 2024.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today: None

Some decent options that are in high risk matchups, but none that I feel good about.

High Risk Options: Patrick Sandoval at TB, Cristopher Sánchez at ATL, Paul Blackburn vs SEA, Adrian Houser at STL, Joey Lucchesi at MIA, Drew Rom vs MIL.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Jameson Taillon vs PIT

Taillon has pitched better as of late and gets a bad Pittsburgh team.

High Risk Options: Reese Olson at LAD, Zack Thompson vs MIL, Jesse Scholtens at WAS.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”

Chris Martin may not have the job for long, Jansen is expected back Wednesday.
Also, Taillon is being pushed back until at least Friday.
