Roto Riteup — Presented by DraftKings: September 10, 2014
By reading this morning’s edition of the Roto Riteup, you’ve already earned yourself a C+ interneting grade for the day.
On today’s agenda:
1. Drew Smyly gets shut down
2. Dustin Ackley to stay out a few more days
3. Jimmy Nelson to the bullpen
4. Dustin Pedroia could be done for 2014
5. The French Five
Drew Smyly gets shut down
The Rays have shut their young lefty down to limit his workload. Smyly ends the 2014 season with 153 innings, finishing with a 3.24 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. Smyly was especially good after being traded to the Rays, coming in with a 1.70 ERA over 47.2 innings. Smyly threw more than double the innings he tossed in 2013’s regular season, and even though he really showed no signs of slowing, the Rays know how to develop pitching, so they are generally to be trusted.
Smyly’s strikeout rates are good but not great, so while he may be a little bit boring, he’s a great grab is all leagues for 2015.
Dustin Ackley to stay out a few more days
The Mariners left fielder has been sitting out with bone spurs in his left ankle, and he’s still not quite ready to return. Ackley had surgery to removed a spur in the same ankle back in 2012, and while he could possibly need to go back under the knife, that’s not being discussed as a present option. Ackley has hit .291 with seven homers and five steals since the All-Star break, so hopefully his injury doesn’t hamper his professional progress.
Jimmy Nelson to the bullpen
This very same author discussed the topic of Nelson and the Brewers bullpen on Monday, but now we have official word that the youngster is heading there. It sounds as if Nelson will work primarily in long relief, which is a shame when you consider what his fastball and slider could look like over shorter outings late in games. Nelson will have fight for a spot in the 2015 rotation, so we could end up seeing him late in games next year.
Dustin Pedroia could be done for 2014
The Red Sox are considering ending their second baseman’s 2014 season, even after an MRI of the player’s wrist showed nothing by inflammation. Pedroia’s been dealing with pain and discomfort in said wrist for most of the season, and with the Red Sox well out of even thinking about thinking about being a contender, there’s no need for him to push himself much longer. Mookie Betts or Brock Holt could receive primary second base duties should Pedroia be shut down.
