Injury Updates Galore

Steven Souza left Friday’s game against the Mets after re-aggravating the right pectoral injury that sidelined him earlier this season.

The Diamondbacks have had a rough go of it without A.J. Pollock in the lineup and will have to wait and see what type of timetable lies ahead for Souza moving forward. David Peralta, Jarrod Dyson, and Chris Owings will be the starting trio while Souza is out. One of either Socrates Brito or even Yasmany Tomas should make their way to the big league roster if/when Souza lands on the disabled list. Brito has been the more productive player thus far at Triple-A Reno.

Nicky Delmonico suffered a hand injury on Friday against the Rangers:

Delmonico left in the second inning after taking a 92 mph fastball from Matt Moore off his right hand. The White Sox will likely continue to trot out Adam Engel and Leury Garcia, while giving Trayce Thompson and Daniel Palka more playing time.

X-rays revealed that Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong has suffered a fractured left hand and is scheduled to undergo surgery.

He’s been placed on the 10-day disabled list and is expected to miss “significant time.” The Cardinals called up top prospect Tyler O’Neil and Yairo Munoz in a corresponding move, with Jedd Gyorko sliding over to shortstop for Friday’s game. With DeJong out expect the Cardinals to continue to use Gyorko close to full-time, with Wong playing second against RHP, Greg Garcia mixing in, and Yairo Munoz likely getting the majority of his at-bats against LHP.

Jaime Garcia was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to left shoulder inflammation. Sam Gaviglio has moved into the Blue Jays rotation, but reports say Garcia is only slated to miss one start.

Miguel Sano is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester on Saturday.

The 25-year old third baseman has been on the shelf with a hamstring injury since April 27th, but has made tangible progress over the last few days. Expect him back with the club sometime within the next week or two.

Brett Anderson left Friday’s start against the Blue Jays after one inning due to tightness in his left shoulder. Manager Bob Melvin said it’s, “hard to believe” he’ll avoid a trip to the disabled list. With Anderson’s injury history and Andrew Triggs being placed on the 10-day disabled list, the Athletics will likely have to promote Kendall Graveman and Daniel Gossett. Both could be in the rotation for a substantial amount of time, but are deep AL-Only streamers at best.

Jerad Eickhoff allowed 2 ER in 3.1 IP with 3 K and 1 BB in his rehab start for Double-A Reading on Tuesday and will make his next start at Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday. The 27-year old right hander hasn’t pitched for the Phillies at all thus far due to a lat injury that was supposed to be minor in severity. It’s not clear what his role will be for the Phillies upon activation, but it’s fair to say he’ll start at some point along the way. Deep-leaguers and NL-Only owners could make a small bid on him this week as a flier, but keep in mind he regressed in a major way in 2017.

According to Angels manager Mike Scoscia, Justin Upton has been unable to lift a bat to this point. He was plunked on the hand by a Chris Archer fastball on Thursday. While he’s expected to avoid a stint on the disabled list, he’s likely to miss the next couple of games.

Daniel Murphy has yet to begin simulated games due to an illness.

He’s still recovering from off-season knee surgery and has yet to start playing in games as of yet. We’re still not out of the woods even if things look good after this weekend, as there were photos of him on crutches as little as 10 days ago. Fantasy owners will have to be patient.

Leonys Martin, Jason Heyward, and Jake Lamb both were all activated from the disabled list on Friday.

Cardinals president John Mozeliak had this to say about Carlos Martinez on Friday:

If Martinez misses another two weeks, it’d put him on pace to return for the weekend series against the Pirates on June 1st-3rd. With Adam Wainwright on the 60-day disabled list, Jack Flaherty is cemented in the rotation and John Gant will likely fill in until Martinez returns.

Staying with Cardinals injuries, Dominic Leone was diagnosed with nerve damage in his right arm and has been prescribed rest and rehab. There’s no timetable for his return.

Zach Britton is set to throw a simulated game on Tuesday.

Britton has continued to ramp things up in his recovery from surgery on his Achilles. He pitched as recently as Tuesday in a live BP session and should start a rehab assignment fairly soon. The Orioles expect him to be activated in early-to-mid June.

Ervin Santana is making progress from his finger injury:

He should start a minor league rehab assignment after the simulated game if things go according to plan. The Twins hope he can be activated sometime next month.

Dansby Swanson is set to be activated from the disabled list today. He’s been sidelined since May 2nd with inflammation in his left wrist.

Juan Lagares is set to miss the rest of the 2018 season after being diagnosed with a hyperextended left big toe and torn plantar plate. He’ll need surgery and was placed on the 10-day disabled list. Brandon Nimmo will see an increase in playing time even when Yoenis Cespedes returns. He’s worth an add in NL-Only formats.

Jordan Zimmermann threw a bullpen session on Friday for the first time since being placed on the disabled list (right shoulder impingement). There’s no timetable for his return, but he’ll likely need a rehab stint.

An MRI on Jeimer Candelario’s wrist showed left wrist tendinitis, but he’ll avoid surgery. The rookie third baseman took grounders on Thursday and should return to the Tigers lineup within the next week or two. Dynasty/Keeper league owners should know that this injury could result in off-season surgery.

Yonny Chirinos has resumed his throwing program. Rays manager Kevin Cash had encouraging words to say on Friday, as he expressed that things are “going really well, eyeing an early-June return.”

Carlos Gomez believes he’ll be ready to be activated from the disabled list when he’s first eligible on May 26th. He’s suffering from a groin ailment.

Avisail Garcia still has a ways to go in his rehab from a Grade 2 hamstring strain:

Alex Reyes is set to make his third rehab outing with Double-A Springfield today, followed by a final one with Triple-A Memphis on May 24th. The top prospect has been stellar over two rehab starts thus far, and should be stashed in most formats at this point.

Clayton Kershaw had an aggressive throwing session from 120 feet on Thursday, but has yet to resume throwing off a mound. We still haven’t received a timetable on his return from his bicep injury.

Various News and Notes
This isn’t exactly fantasy relevant, but we all have a friend like Trevor Bauer right?

With D.J. LeMahieu on the disabled list for at least the next three weeks, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post says the Rockies haven’t ruled out promoting infield prospect Garrett Hampson to take his place.

Hampson is the eighth ranked prospect in the Rockies system according to Eric Longenhagen’s list. He posted a .304/.391/.466 line with four home runs and 19 stolen bases at Double-A Hartford before being recently promoted. The Rockies have played Ryan McMahon at second base recently as well, but Hampson received the start there in his first game with the Triple-A club. Obviously, a player getting at-bats in Colorado is interesting. Keep your eyes on this situation, as he becomes an interesting fantasy commodity if he is indeed promoted to the big league roster somewhat soon.

Braves manager Brian Snitker said Luiz Gohara is a candidate to receive a start next week. Over three appearances in the majors thus far, Gohara has allowed 1 ER, 2 H, and 1 HR with 5 K and 2 BB over 6 IP. He created a lot of buzz towards the beginning of the season and should eventually get an opportunity to be in the rotation this season. He’s worth an add in deeper formats.

A Pitcher for Today: Andrew Heaney vs. TB

Hail-Mary Pick for Today: Freddy Peralta @ MIN

A Pitcher for Tomorrow: Tyler Anderson @ SF
Giants have a .305 wOBA against LHP. Great park difference for Anderson, surprisingly strong strikeout metrics as well.

Hail-Mary Pick for Tomorrow: Mike Minor @ CHW
The White Sox are even worse than the Giants against LHP (.290 wOBA) and rank 28th in RPG at home. Minor has scuffled in a major way, so despite the matchup, the risk is profound.
