Closer Chaos
Carlos Estévez was seen in a walking boot on Sunday in the clubhouse. According to manager Matt Quantaro, he was unavailable on Sunday for the game and may be used in “lower-leverage” when he is available. Lucas Erceg was called upon to get the save in the game against the Braves on Sunday and was able to close the door on Atlanta, allowing no runs on one hit and no walks while striking out one.
Erceg could be the next man up in Kansas City and is worth speculating on.
Clayton Beeter threw a perfect innings versus the Cubs to register his first save of the season for the Nationals.
The Nationals have a bullpen filled with relievers that most people have never heard of, so there was some ambiguity as to who might be the closer. This may still turn into a committee, but it seems Beeter will at worst be the leading member of a committee or he could have the role all to himself.
Quick Hits
Jacob deGrom played catch from 120 feet on Sunday. He is expected to make his start on Tuesday against the Orioles.
Various News and Notes
Carter Jensen has had a slow start to the season, but he has played in every single game so far for the Royals which is a very promising sign that he will be able to get enough plate appearances to be fantasy relevant. He is a top 50 prospect and was fantastic in his brief callup last season. He should be picked up if still available in any leagues.
Owen Caissie went 1-for-2 with a home run in the victory over the Rockies on Sunday.
Caisse is a top 100 prospect that was traded in the offseason for Edward Cabrera. He has a ton of pop, but can struggle with swing and miss. He was more patient in spring and that seems to be carrying over to the start of the season. He is viable in a lot of formats especially because the Marlins should give him a lot of leeway early on.
Jordan Walker went 3-for-4 with a home run in the loss to the Rays on Sunday.
Walker has started off the season hot which is good to see after a spring training where he really struggled. He reportedly reworked his swing this offseason to help cut down on strikeouts and tap into the massive amounts of raw power in his bat. It remains to be seen if the former will stick, but so far he has only struck out once in 12 plate appearances and his O-Swing is down from 37% in spring to 20% so far this season. This is definitely something to keep an eye on.
Colson Montgomery went 2-for-4 with a grand slam in the loss to the Brewers on Sunday.
Montgomery is a former top prospect that has struggled with swing and miss throughout his time coming up through the minor leagues. There is a ton of pop and it was on display last season when he hit 21 home runs in just 73 games, but he needs to be more patient at the plate and make more contact as pitchers adjust to him if he wants to stick in the Majors.
