Closer Chaos

Mike Vasil threw 1.2 innings versus the Giants without allowing a baserunner to get the save.

While many playing fantasy right now are excited about Grant Taylor, the White Sox have gone with a committee this season. The White Sox have only locked down ten saves this season and they have been split between seven players. Taylor was likely unavailable after throwing 31 pitches the night before so he could still be the guy, but it seems likely that even if one pitcher becomes the full on closer, there won’t be enough saves to move the needle in most formats.

Trade Rumors
According to Bob Nightengale, the Astros are interested in Cedric Mullins. Mullins has been mentioned as one of the most likely trade candidates this season as the Orioles have struggled and he is one of the older players on the team. There will be a number of teams interested in the 30-year-old as he is a pending free agent and won’t cost a ton to acquire.

Quick Hits
Gabriel Arias left Sunday’s game with a leg injury on this play:

The injury looked bad on the field, but x-rays were negative. He was diagnosed with an ankle sprain. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Luis Robert Jr. was placed on the IL with a hamstring strain. The move is retroactive to June 26 and the hope is that it will be a minimum stay on the IL.

Miguel Rojas left Sunday’s game with a finger injury. X-rays were negative. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Kerry Carpenter left Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury.

Reports are that he just tweaked it, but it is concerning. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Various News and Notes
Chad Patrick threw five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight in the no-decision versus the Rockies on Sunday.

Patrick was fantastic, getting a 64% whiff rate on the slider and a 35% CSW on the fastball. Patrick has good stuff and the command and control are adequate to continue to work. If he can continue to get whiffs, we may see a second half breakout.

Sal Frelick went 3-for-5 with a home run in the loss to the Rockies on Sunday.

Frelick has quietly been great this season, hitting .300/.359/.401 with five home runs and stealing 15 bases. Frelick makes a ton of contact and always has but he added some muscle in the offseason and it has led to more power. He will never be a massive power source, but with his contact skills and speed, he can approach being a 10/30 guy with a good average which is valuable in just about every format.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today: Trevor Rogers at TEX

Rogers pitched well in his first start back from the minors and is facing the Rangers again.

Other Options: Andrew Heaney vs STL.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Charlie Morton at TEX

Morton has been great recently and is facing a bad Rangers offense.

Other Options: Edward Cabrera vs MIN, Andre Pallante at PIT, Colton Gordon at COL.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “Other Options.”
