Roto Riteup: June 29, 2022

Everytime a former player’s son gets drafted, I get another gray hair.

On the Agenda:

  1. Closer Chaos
  2. Trades!
  3. Quick Hits
  4. Various News and Notes
  5. Streaming Pitchers

Closer Chaos

Kenley Jansen was placed on the IL with an irregular heartbeat. This is obviously concerning as Jansen has dealt with issues pertaining to his heart multiple times in his career. He had a surgery in 2018 and a procedure in 2012 to try and correct the issue. There is no timetable for his return. Will Smith is the logical choice to fill in for him while he is out, but AJ Minter got the save on Tuesday.

Trades

The Cleveland Guardians acquired Sandy Leon from the Reds for cash on Tuesday. With Austin Hedges hitting the IL with a concussion the Guardians added to their catching depth. This is just the beginning of trade season, but I wouldn’t expect many major splashes for the Guardians considering how cheap they have become.

Quick Hits

Michael Brantly was placed on the IL with shoulder discomfort. There is no timetable for his return, but it does not sound serious. Chas McCormick was recalled to take his spot on the roster.

Zach Eflin was placed on the IL with a knee bruise. There is no timetable for his return.

Zach Davies was placed on the IL with shoulder inflammation. This is disappointing news as Davies has pitched fairly well this season and was likely an attractive trade piece. There is no current timetable for his return.

Jazz Chisholm left Tuesday’s game with back discomfort. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Josh Smith left Tuesday’s game with calf contusion after fouling a pitch off his leg. Smith was able to play through it for a number of innings before exiting late. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Taylor Trammell left Tuesday’s game with a hamstring strain. He is expected to be placed on the IL Wednesday.

Brandon Marsh left Tuesday’s game with a knee contusion. There didn’t seem to be a specific incident that caused the injury. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Various News and Notes

Patrick Corbin threw eight innings in the victory over the Pirates, allowing just five hits and two walks while striking out 12.

This kind of came out of nowhere as Corbin looked like a vintage version of himself. Not only was he getting a ton of whiffs, the velocity on all his pitches were up including 2 mph on his sinker and 1.5 mph on his fastball. Maybe this was just a good day, but it is definitely something to keep an eye on.

Dean Kremer threw seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five in the no-decision.

Kremer wasn’t overly impressive in the outing and he was helped out a ton by some magnificent defense of his teammates:

That being said, he did a good job of not being in the zone too much where the Mariners could crush him. This is a decent stretch of starts we have seen from him, but regression will come for him at some point.

Jose Miranda 2-for-4 with a home run in the victory over the Guardians.

Miranda’s overall line isn’t very impressive, but since the beginning of June, he is hitting .311 with three home runs in 65 65 plate appearances. He is still swinging out of the zone a fair amount and his contact numbers are right around league average, but he is getting better and the results are nice thus far.

Pitcher for Today: Mitch Keller at WAS

Over Keller’s last five starts, he has gone at least five innings in each start with a 2.96 ERA and 23 K’s in 27.1 innings. This is a decent matchup as well, but with him there is always risk.

High Risk Options: Madison Bumgarner vs SD, Cole IRvin at NYY, German Marquez vs LAD, Chris Flexen vs BAL, Dylan Bundy at CLE, Dane Dunning at KC, Justin Steele vs CIN, Paolo Espino vs PIT.

Pitcher for Tomorrow:  None

Shorter slate with some intriguing options, but none that don’t feel like a trap.

High Risk Options: Yusei Kikuchi vs TB, Adrian Houser at PIT, Chris Archer at CLE, JT Brubaker vs MIL, Mitch White vs SD.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from the recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”

I will be heading out on vacation for the 4th of July and will return next week! Hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday!
