Roto Riteup: June 28, 2023

Someone does ballet in the offseason.

On the Agenda:

  1. Quick Hits
  2. Various News and Notes
  3. Streaming Pitchers

Quick Hits

Merrill Kelly was placed on the 15-day IL with a blood clot in his right calf. There is no timetable for his return.

Matthew Boyd will undergo Tommy John surgery. This is not surprising news considering the nature of his injury. He will miss the remainder of the season and most of next season if not all of it.

Various News and Notes
David Peterson threw six scoreless innings versus the Brewers on Tuesday, allowing just five hits and three walks in the victory.

Peterson pitched well, but wasn’t overly dominant in the outing. He benefited from going up against one of the worst teams in baseball versus left handed pitching. Peterson is a short term streamer in good matchups and not much more at this point.

Gavin Williams threw seven scoreless innings on Tuesday against the Royals, allowing just one hit and one walk in the no-decision.

Ok, this is what we were looking for! Williams was fantastic, generating a 39% CSW on the fastball and keeping hitters off balanced with his slider and curve. He clearly had some hiccups in the first start, but this was the start he needed to keep his job in the rotation with Cal Quantrill returning shortly.

Brandon Marsh went 2-for-3 with two home runs in the victory over the Cubs on Monday.

Marsh has had an up and down season, hitting .329 with four home runs in April, then .208 in May with one home run and now .304 with two home runs in the month of June. He tends to be a streaky player, but he also ran huge BABIPs in both April and June so it seems like he is destined to return to the player he was in May then keep it going.

Evan Longoria went 2-for-3 with a home run in the victory over the Rays on Tuesday.

Longoria has quietly been pretty decent, hitting .243 with 11 home runs in 132 plate appearances. With Josh Rojas being sent down to the minor leagues, Longoria is splitting time with Emmanuel Rivera at the hot corner, but could garner more of that time because while he is not the player he was in his prime, he is still a good power bat that can play good defense.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today: JP Sears vs NYY

Weird to target the Yankees as a streaming matchup, but they have been dreadful over the last month.

High Risk Options: Wade Miley at NYM, Jaime Barria vs CHW.

Pitcher for Tomorrow:  Clarke Schmidt at OAK

Schmidt has pitched really well as of late and gets a bad Oakland offense in a great park.

High Risk Options: J.P. France at STL, Kyle Hendricks vs PHI, Luis Ortiz vs SD, James Kaprielian vs NYY.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”
