Roto Riteup: June 28, 2015
When looking at weather reports for the next couple of days, this Roto Riteup author wants to never stop vomiting.
On today’s agenda:
1. Let’s talk about Yovani Gallardo
2. Various news and notes
3. Streaming Pitcher Options
Let’s talk about Yovani Gallardo
Gallardo has posted some pretty nice superficial numbers this year, and especially during the month of June. During this calendar month, Gallardo has a 0.54 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP to go along with a 2.41 FIP and 6.75 K/9. On the year, Gallardo’s ERA sits below 3.00 and his WHIP just above 1.15, but a low BABIP lords over the Rangers starter like a summer thunderstorm.
Gallardo’s case is a bit stranger than just those numbers may suggest. From a fastball/curveball upon his arrival to the big leagues in 2007, Gallardo has slowly transformed himself into a sinker/slider righty who uses his curve only slightly more often against left-handed hitters than he does against righties.
Gallardo’s never going to get the strikeouts like did from 2009 to 2012, but he’s remade himself into an effective big league starter nonetheless — though not one I’d want on my standard mixed league teams.
Various news and notes
In weird injury news, Robinson Cano was plunked in the head between innings when a throw during the Angels infield warm up went awry and flew into the Mariners dugout. Cano seems to have escaped without a concussion, but he does have a pretty nice welt to show off.
Jorge Soler will start his rehab assignment sometime this week, and should be back to the big leagues within 10 days of starting his assignment. Speed isn’t Soler’s fantasy strength, so his ankle injury shouldn’t hinder his value much.
Ervin Santana will be debuting for the Twins next Sunday as he returns from a PED suspension. One assumes he’ll take Tommy Milone’s spot, but nothing has been announced quite yet.
After blowing up against the Yankees yesterday, Brett Oberholtzer is being sent to Triple-A. Expect the Astros to bring up an extra bullpen arm for the next few days before settling in on a starter to replace him.
Streaming Pitcher Options
If you enjoy streaming pitchers, tune into the Roto Riteup for recommendations each and every day.
A pitcher for today: Steven Matz vs CIN (Josh Smith)
For funsies, if nothing else.
A pitcher for tomorrow: Nathan Karns vs CLE (Cody Anderson)
I’m still seeing Karns available in far too many leagues, so take advantage.

Steven Matz looked great today, but OttoNeu thinks Matt Harvey got the start. Has anybody noticed that Matz’s stats have been attributed to Harvey? At least as of now (8:30 pm), Harvey is getting credit for Matz’s performance.
I love OttoNeu, but the glitches are a bit annoying.
