Roto Riteup: June 27, 2015

We’ve had amateur drafts for two of the Big Four sports this week, but it’s not baseball, so we won’t speak of the likes of Kristaps Porzingis in today’s Roto Riteup.

On today’s agenda:
1. Giancarlo Stanton’s broken hand
2. J.D. Martinez is spitting hot fire
3. Various news and notes
4. Streaming Pitcher Options

Giancarlo Stanton’s broken hand
The Marlins star had an X-ray done on his left hand this morning, and early reports are that he has a broken bone. While the extent of the break, the location, and other details remain unknown, it’s certainly not good news. Broken bones in the hand and wrist can sap power for up to 24 months, though I would expect Giancarlo to be somewhat of an exception to that rule. The slugger could potentially miss the remainder of the 2015 season.

J.D. Martinez is spitting hot fire
The Tigers outfielder appears to be seeing a beach ball come out of the pitcher’s hand, because he is absolutely killing the ball as of late. In honor of his impressive stretch, let’s give him his very own section of arbitrary endpoints.

4/6 – 4/19: 52 PA, .240/.269/.560; 5 HR, 23.1% K%, .212 BABIP
4/20 – 5/3: 52 PA, .240/.269/.400; 1 HR, 40.4% K%, .393 BABIP
5/4 – 5/17: 50 PA, .282/.440/.462; 2 HR, 26.0% K%, .375 BABIP
5/18 – 5/31: 58 PA, .308/.362/.442; 1 HR, 22.4% K%, .385 BABIP
6/1 – 6/14: 44 PA, .262/.295/.524; 3 HR, 22.7% K%, .276 BABIP
6/15 – now: 43 PA, .317/.349/.854; 7 HR, 23.3% K%, .250 BABIP

Various news and notes

I don’t want to jinx him, but Brett Anderson has now pitched more innings this year than any season since 2010. It’s always appropriate to worry about Anderson’s health, but perhaps even more so now.

A’s catcher Stephen Vogt was plunked in the hand yesterday, but luckily the tests came back negative and he doesn’t have any major damage. Expect him to sit over the weekend.

The Astros recalled Jon Singleton yesterday, making things complicated for fantasy owners across the board. Singleton will take some ABs from Evan Gattis and Chris Carter at the moment. The 23-year-old has continued to show pop in AAA, but his biggest issue is making enough consistent contact for it to matter. It’s nearly impossible to be as bad as he was last year, but as long as he’s not playing every day, it’s hard to buy in.

Streaming Pitcher Options
If you enjoy streaming pitchers, tune into the Roto Riteup for recommendations each and every day.

A pitcher for today: Chris Young at OAK (Scott Kazmir)
Any time you can get a popup specialist in the league’s most spacious ballpark, you pull the trigger.

A pitcher for tomorrow: Steven Matz vs CIN (Josh Smith)
For funsies, if nothing else.

“two of the Big Four sports this week”

Please correct this to “two of the Big Five sports this week” I’m not sure which of football, soccer, hockey, or basketball you’re forgetting, but there’s five, not four.

Dude, here is annual revenue per sport:
NFL 9.5 billion
MLB 9 billion
NBA 5 billion
NHL 3.7 billion
—————-
MLS 0.5 billion

Which one stands out as maybe not so major? Major in some sports fans’ hearts is not what I think the author meant to say, but rather in popularity (for which revenue is a fair proxy).

If he meant the big four in terms of internationally and not the sports Americans consider their big four, then yeah, of course the PL… you think that is what the author meant when he talked about two of four drafts having just happened?

And how many billions in revenue do you think soccer, more commonly known as football around the world, generates in Europe?

In terms of popularity, i.e., how many people watch the sport, European football, aka soccer, is king. And it’s not even close.

The Champions League final was watched by an estimated 2 billion people.
