Roto Riteup: June 19, 2013

The present author is taking a break from cleaning and packing up his apartment to present to you perhaps the greatest Roto Riteup of all time.

On today’s agenda:
1. Giancarlo’s on fire
2. Lonnie Chisenhall gets recalled
3. Nick Franklin vs Dustin Ackley
4. Mark Teixeira to DL, Carlos Ruiz off it
5. Chris Coghlan won’t need back surgery

Giancarlo’s on fire
Mr. Giancarlo Stanton has been an absolute monster since returning from his lengthy stint on the disabled list. In his first seven games back in action, Giancarlo has hit four homers and sports a .393/.433/.929 batting line aided by a BABIP of only .318. Small sample and all, it’s great to see Giancarlo return to his powerful ways, especially when he’s only struck out twice in his first 30 plate appearances.

Lonnie Chisenhall gets recalled
After tearing up the competition in triple-A, Chisenhall has gotten the nod and will be heading back to the big leagues to man the hot corner for the Indians. Chisenhall hit .390 in 27 minor league games, mashing six homers in the process. While those numbers are great and all, Chisenhall still struck out 19.2% of the time, which is the worse mark he’s ever put up in the minors. Chisenhall has done this to us all before, and while he’s still just 24 years old, I wouldn’t get too excited about his latest developments.

Nick Franklin vs Dustin Ackley
Nick Franklin’s first 20 games: .299/.382/.522; .321 BABIP, 11.8 BB%, 14.5 K%, 3 HR, 2 SB
Dustin Ackley’s first 20 games: .304/.364/.536, .316 BABIP, 10.3 BB%, 13.0 K%, 3 HR, 2 SB

Mark Teixeira to DL, Carlos Ruiz off it
Teixeira returns to inactivity just a couple weeks after coming back from injury. Teixeira is sidelined by his wrist, and the veteran slugger seriously struggled in his 15 MLB games. He’ll likely be back sometime later this year, but this looks like a lost season for Tex.

Carlos Ruiz, on the flip side, is coming off the DL. Ruiz has also played 16 games this year due to both suspension and injury, but the former All-Star will now get a chance to prove his worth before potentially hitting the open market this offseason.

Chris Coghlan won’t need back surgery
Getting back to the Miami Marlins, the former Rookie of the Year will be able to avoid surgery on his back. The doctors are suggesting simple rest and rehab for Coghlan’s back injury, but that never seems to be the final solution. Coghlan has his highest batting average since his ROY campaign, but it still only sits at .277 with a .347 BABIP, so it’s not like the 28-year-old has had a major career revitalization. Even after all these struggles, the left-handed hitter still has a .337 career wOBA against righties, so if he can get healthy, he’s not an entirely useless major league or fantasy player.

If you were to have a DL’d player clogging up a bench spot, would you rather it be Teixeira or Gyorko?

It has to be Gyorko . Tex might be finished for the year .

I’d keep Gyorko, too, fwiw. A bad wrist often means poor production even when you are in the lineup.

Gyorko.
