Sleeper and the Bust DK Contest

On most Tuesday’s and Friday’s and some other days, Paul Sporer and I will be doing a $5 draftkings game for anyone that is interested.

Closer Chaos

Ryan Helsey was placed on the IL with a forearm strain. This is unfortunate news as this is often a precursor to Tommy John surgery. Giovanny Gallegos is likely to take his spot as the closer of the Cardinals moving forward.

Miguel Castro threw an inning versus the Phillies, allowing one run on two hits while striking out one in the save on Monday. Castro got the nod in the ninth a day after Scott McGough got the save on Sunday. This is looking more like a committee in Arizona but Castro has been volatile recently which means McGough has a chance to steal the job.

Quick Hits

Luke Voit signed a minor league deal with the Mets. He is likely to give the Mets some depth with Pete Alonso out for a while, but he struggled mightily prior to getting released by Milwaukee so he will have to show something in AAA before he makes his way to the Majors.

Daniel Murphy signed a minor league contract with the Angels. This came out of nowhere! I don’t know that he makes a fantasy impact at any point, but we can watch and see if he can reclaim some past glory in Anaheim’s minor league system.

Marcell Ozuna left Monday’s game after being hit with a pitch on the wrist.

X-rays were negative following the game. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Various News and Notes
Dairon Blanco went 1-for-4 with a caught stealing in the loss to the Reds on Monday.

Blanco is not really much of a prospect at the age of 30, but what he does do is steal bases. He stole 47 bases in just 49 games in AAA this season and he stole 45 bases in AAA last year. He showed good plate skills with a 10.6% walk rate and a 16.8% strikeout rate to go with those steals. He likely isn’t going to do much but steal, but he is a cheap source of speed if you are desperate.

James Paxton threw six innings versus the Rockies allowing an unearned run on four hits and a walk while striking out eight in the no-decision on Monday.

Paxton has been fantastic since returning from the IL outside of one bad outing against the Angels. In spite of his success, he is just 56% rostered in Yahoo leagues and unlike many other breakouts, there is no risk he is shut down or babied as long as he is healthy.

Ezekiel Duran went 1-for-3 with a home run in the loss to the Angels on Monday.

Duran is now hitting .310/.359/.510 with seven home runs and three stolen bases while striking out a 22% rate. However, he is making below league average contact and running at a .369 BABIP so there is regression coming, but I have been riding the hot streak most of the season and I don’t know that selling will net much of anything so it is probably best to just ride it until the wheels come off with hopes that they don’t.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today: Kutter Crawford v COL

I don’t know if Crawford will go deep into the game, but this is a great matchup versus a Rockies team that struggles on the road.

High Risk Options: Jameson Taillon vs PIT, Reese Olson vs ATL, Yonny Chirinos at OAK, Jaime Barria at TEX, Luis Ortiz at CHC.

Pitcher for Tomorrow:  Garrett Whitlock vs COL

This will be the last start Whitlock will be less than 50% rostered.

High Risk Options:  Michael Lorenzen vs ATL, Ranger Suarez at ARI, Mike Clevinger at LAD, Kyle Bradish vs TOR, Rich Hill at CHC, Ronel Blanco vs WAS.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”
