Closer Chaos

Tanner Houck pitched a clean ninth on Sunday to log his second save against the Mariners. Houck has now logged two saves in three days and appears to be locking down the role in Boston. There has been a lot of fluidity in the ninth inning for the Red Sox this season, but Houck has the skills to be an elite closer if they do give him the role full time. 

 

Quick Hits

Michael Kopech left Sunday’s start with a knee issue after this pitch. 

There was no structural damage in an MRI taken at the stadium. Consider Kopech day-to-day at this time.

Aristides Aquino left Sunday’s game after an awkward slide into home plate. There was no update on his condition as of writing. Consider him day-to-day at this time.

Luis Urias left Sunday’s game with hamstring tightness. It doesn’t sound serious, so consider him day-to-day at this time.

Nathan Eovaldi was placed on the IL with back inflammation. It doesn’t sound like he will be out long, but the Red Sox will play it safe and give him some time. The move is retroactive to June 9th.

Eli White left Sunday’s game after this collision in the outfield.

White underwent imaging on his wrist after the injury, but manager Chris Woodward had no update following the game. Consider him day-to-day for now, but it seems likely he will miss some time.

Chris Taylor left Sunday’s game with a facial laceration on this play:

Taylor is expected to be fine, so consider him day-to-day at this time.

 

Various News and Notes

Mike Yastrzemski went 2-for-4 with a home run in the Giants victory over the Dodgers on Sunday. 

Yaz has been somewhat boring this year for fantasy, hitting just six home runs on the season while sporting a .275 batting average. However, the underlying skills have been pretty enticing. He has an average exit velocity in the 90th percentile, a 13.3% walk rate, a 20% strikeout rate with a 90% zone contact percentage. I’ve never really been a big fan of his for fantasy, but I am pretty intrigued here and I think he is worth buying right now.

Jeffrey Springs threw scoreless 5.1 innings at Minnesota, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five.

Springs was impressive again, especially with the changeup. He has been a fantastic breakout, but I have concerns about what his workload will be for the rest of the season. Springs threw 44.2 in 2022 and has already thrown 44.1 innings this season. I think he will be very good while he pitches, but at some point I expect that he reverts to the bullpen role which would likely make him less valuable unless he has an opener.

Edward Cabrera threw 3.2 innings versus the Astros, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out twp in the loss.

We saw the ceiling in Cabrera’s profile in his first two starts and now we have seen the downside. Cabrera really struggled to hit his spots in and out of the zone. The stuff is fantastic, but there will be struggles with control and command that can lead to these kinds of outcomes.

Pitcher for Today: None

Some interesting high risk options, but no one I feel very comfortable with. 

High Risk Options: Mitch Keller at STL, Zach Thompson vs PIT, Chris Flexen 플렉센 vs MIN, Brady Singer at SF, Chris Archer at SEA. 

 

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Zach Davies

Won’t get you many strikeouts, but it is a nice matchup at home. 

High Risk Options: JT Brubaker at STL, Dane Dunning vs HOU, Matthew Liberatore vs PIT.
