Roto Riteup: July 30, 2012

Today’s Roto Riteup should help you figure out exactly what the hell happened over the weekend. You know, with trades and whatnot.

• Zack Greinke is now an Angel, making their rotation absolutely ridiculous. Greinke’s first start back in the AL was a successful one — he struck out eight Rays over seven innings of work — and he will be a dominant starter in the Junior Circuit for the rest of the season, at which time he will become a free agent and could sign with any team he chooses.

• Francisco Liriano is now a member of the Chicago White Sox, and his new home ballpark could make life miserable for him. Pitching within the same division and with more run support are the only pluses to come out of this deal for Liriano owners, but the negatives will likely negate the positives.

• Chris Johnson is now going to be playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and he will be playing at third base on a daily basis for his new team. The D’Backs are acquiring a player who is sure to disappoint, but fantasy owners should note that Johnson will now be able to hit a few more homers throughout a full season. Johnson isn’t likely to hit higher than .280, even with the additional power output.

• It appears that Logan Morrison will miss the rest of the year due to a right knee injury. LoMo’s season has been a disappointing one, especially after 2010’s outburst and the solid follow-up campaign that came in 2011. Morrison will still only be 25 years old when his 2013 season starts, so there’s plenty of reason to believe he can turn it around and have a very successful big league career that fantasy owners — especially those in OBP leagues — can capitalize on. His keeper value is low right now, so look to acquire him if his owner makes him available.

For those of you who play daily fantasy games like FanGraphs: The Game, or just like to stream players, here are a couple matchups you may be able to exploit.

A Pitcher for Today: Marco Estrada vs HOU
Despite the homers — oh, the homers — Estrada has been excellent this year when given the chance to start.

A Pitcher for Tomorrow: Aaron Laffey at SEA
Laffey is returning to Seattle, where right-handers will have a hard time taking advantage of mistakes.

A Hitter for Today: David Murphy vs LAA (Ervin Santana)
I would love to grab Mitch Moreland if he returns to the team in time for tomorrow’s game, but there’s no guarantee of that happening, so i’ve chosen Murphy.

Desmond? Hanson? maybe Arod or Paplebon? .. idk
Unless that is a very deep league, I would ask for some kind of compensation. That is not a good team at all (see: really bad).

Agreed, I’m inheriting a terrible squad. Free for this year though, so no big deal.

I’d say keep Desmond. You can get similar SPs or RPs for the same price/pick or less in the draft. No other hitters on that roster really have much upside and SS is a wasteland.

Word. I’m feeling Jose/Kinsler/longo, and then Desmond. Last guy I’m thinking Hanson? Is he better than Haren for next year?
