Various News and Notes

James Paxton left Tuesday’s start because he tore the nail off of his middle finger. With rosters expanding soon, the Mariners may decide not to place him on the DL, but this is worth monitoring since a similar injury shut him down for the season last year.

Cameron Maybin injured his thumb on Monday and was subsequently held out of Tuesday’s game. A MRI showed no major injury and is considered day-to-day at this time. This is the same thumb that forced him to the disabled list earlier in the month. Maybin is hitting .375/.464/.583 in seven games since returning from the DL and is hitting on top of a loaded lineup in Detroit.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, Yasiel Puig has been claimed off of revocable waivers from an unknown team. It sounds unlikely that he would be moved in a trade before the Wednesday deadline as he is likely to be recalled once rosters expand on September 1st. All reports from the minor leagues are that he has followed instructions of the organization and been on his best behavior. In leagues where he may have been dropped, he may be worth an add as both Joc Pederson and Josh Reddick have been scuffling the entire month of August for the division leading Dodgers.

Oswaldo Arcia hit his first home run on Tuesday since being acquired by the Padres. Arcia has failed to make enough contact at the Major League level to be a useful piece in fantasy outside of mono-leagues, but is a potential cheap source of power in NL only leagues and potentially is sitting out there on waiver wires since being acquired by the Padres this week. San Diego has reasons to give the 25-year-old playing time to see if he can recover any of the value people once saw in him as a prospect.

A pitcher for today: Tyler Anderson vs. LAD (Rich Hill)

With the postponement yesterday, I get to reuse my pick! You like ballsy calls? The Dodgers have the lowest wOBA in the Major Leagues against left-handed pitching this season. Anderson has shown the ability to pitch well in his home park. Opposing pitcher Rich Hill has a career 8.80 ERA and 1.891 WHIP in Colorado.

*I am a huge SF Giants fan

A pitcher for tomorrow: Mike Foltynewicz vs SD (Jarred Cosart)

It is a pretty small slate, but at this point I don’t think Cosart would bet on himself.

Worth mentioning – Kershaw threw two simulated innings on Tuesday (8/30) and felt good. He’ll need a rehab start, but could be back as soon as late next week.
