Roto Riteup: August 28, 2012

Did you miss us? There was a Roto Riteup written yesterday, but the editors decided not to run it due to the inordinate amount of racial slurs it included. And no, they couldn’t just be changed out without completely ruining the post, you stupid <censored>.

• Nick Hundley’s season is over, as the catcher is scheduled to undergo surgery tomorrow to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Hundley struggled big time during his time in the bigs, and has essentially been replaced by Yasmani Grandal. One should expect Grandal to start the season as the everyday catcher in 2013, but with two years left on his contract, Hundley will almost certainly be back in San Diego to serve as Grandal backup. Hundley is less than a year removed from a season in which he hit .288 with nine homers, but as a backup, Hundley has very little value outside of rounding out a very cheap catcher core in ottoneu.

• Roger Bernadina has been on fire while playing part-time for the Nationals, hitting .308 and stealing 14 bags. Bernadina has walked up to the dish 225 times, but he’s played in 103 games thanks to his defensive ability. Bernadina could be called upon next season to roam the outfield against right-handed hitters should the Nationals decide not to bring Adam LaRoche back into the fold. Bernadina has been a slightly below-average against right-handed hitters throughout his MLB career, but it’s hard to see Washington not get a little over excited about his current numbers.

• Casper Wells was sent down to Triple-A yesterday to make room for the return of Franklin Gutierrez. Wells has 23 bombs in less than 600 trips to the plate and will be entering his age-28 season in 2013. Odds are Wells will serve as a fourth outfielder and Eric Thames platoon partner, a role he is perfectly suited for. Limited playing time will put a big damper on his value in regular old fantasy leagues, but he’ll still have tons of value in daily games like FanGraphs: The Game. For every day Wells is in the minors, I vow to eat tons of greasy food. A reverse hunger-strike of sorts.

• This is hardly fantasy related, but there’s a chance this article will be read by more people than the Orioles drew last night. If you play in an attendance fantasy league, I don’t know why you took the Orioles to begin with, so you should probably get your head checked.
