Closer Chaos
The Cubs released Hector Neris on Tuesday. Neris had a team option in his contract that would have been converted into a player option if he finished 45 games. The Cubs decided to cut ties with Neris instead of allowing that to take effect. With Neris gone, the Cubs turned to Porter Hodge for the first save opportunity and he was able to throw a scoreless inning versus the Tigers, allowing one run on one hit and striking out two. This may be a committee, but if Hodge has the role, there will be a lot of value and at worst he is a part of the conversation if it is a committee.
Angel Chivilli threw a scoreless inning versus the Nationals, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out one to register his first save of the season. Victor Vodnik is dealing with shoulder soreness which is why Chivilli was called upon, but he has struggled a ton this season, so it is not guaranteed that this would become his job if Vodnik misses extended time, especially with former closers Justin Lawrence and Tyler Kinley on the roster.
Quick Hits
The Braves placed Austin Riley on the IL with a broken hand. Riley is expected to miss 6-8 weeks, ostensibly ending his season, The Braves signed Gio Urshela to take his spot on the roster.
Jeimer Candeloario was placed on the IL with a broken toe. There is no timetable for his return. The Reds signed Amed Rosario to take his spot on the roster.
Zach Eflin was placed on the IL with shoulder soreness. The Orioles are hopeful that Eflin won’t be out longer than a minimum stay, but it is always concerning to see a shoulder injury. Cade Povich was recalled to take his spot on the roster.
Ha-Seong Kim 김하성 was placed on the IL with shoulder inflammation. The move is retroactive to August 19th. Matthew Batten will take his spot on the roster.
Tyler Mahle was placed on the IL with shoulder tightness. There is no timetable for his return. Jon Gray was activated to take his spot on the roster.
Luis Gil left Tuesday’s game with lower back tightness. Consider him day-to-day at this time.
Patrick Bailey was placed on the IL with an oblique strain. These injuries often take 4-6 weeks to recover from, making him droppable in all formats.
Various News and Notes
George Springer went 2-for-5 with two home runs in the victory over the Reds on Tuesday.

— MLB (@MLB) August 21, 2024
Springer has struggled this season, hitting just .222/.301/.380 with 16 home runs and 13 stolen bases, but he has been really unlucky on balls in play and is making good in-zone contact. He should have better luck rest of the way and is worth a pickup in deeper formats.
Frankie Montas threw seven scoreless innings versus the Cardinals, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three in the victory on Tuesday.

Montas has pitched well since coming over to the Brewers but this was his best start thus far. He had a 42% whiff rate on his fastball and mixed pitches well keeping the Cardinals hitters off-balanced. He isn’t much more than a team streamer, but two of his next three starts line up against Oakland and Colorado at home.
Dean Kremer threw six innings versus the Mets, allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out seven in the victory on Tuesday.

Kremer was very good in this one, throwing four of his pitches at least 20% of the time and getting a 50% whiff rate on his splitter and a 35% CSW on his sinker. Kremer has been up and down this season, but he is a talented pitcher that has weirdly put up better numbers away from home this season. Unfortunately for him, because of the Orioles six man rotation, he lines up against the Dodgers, White Sox and Red Sox for his next three starts and two of those are not ones you want to use him for.
