Various News and Notes

Mark Vientos went 2-for 5 with two home runs in the loss to the A’s on Thursday.

Vientos has been great this season, hitting .275/.333/557 with 19 home runs in 288 plate appearances. The average has come down considerably in the second half but the strikeout rate is still pretty good for such a massive power hitter. If he can continue to keep the strikeouts in check, he will be a huge source of power.

Grant McCray went 2-for-3 with a home run in the victory over the Braves on Thursday.

This was not a cheap home run as it went out to the deepest part of the yard. McCray is one of the Giants top 10 prospects and made his debut this week, but while he has a bit of power and speed, he is mostly known for his defense. He was good in AAA, hitting .272//.347/.471 with six home runs and eight stolen bases with a 25% strikeout rate. However, he was striking out at a much higher rate in AA before his promotion this year and that is more in line with what he has been throughout his time in the minors. His contact skills will determine whether he sticks in the Majors.

Weston Wilson went 4-for-5 and hit for the cycle in the win over the Nationals on Thursday.

This was an amazing night for the 29-year-old utility infielder. Wilson has hit well for the Phillies, but he is only really a short side platoon player which can be useful as a streamer in deeper leagues, but not the majority of formats. This is a fun story though.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today: Jose Soriano vs ATL

Soriano has pitched well as of late and gets an Atlanta offense I am not afraid of.

High Risk Options: Simeon Woods Richardson at TEX, Aaron Civale vs CLE, Nick Martinez vs KC, Yariel Rodrigue at CHC.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: David Festa at TEX

Not the easiest of matchups, but Festa has been great since his recall.

High Risk Options: Hayden Birdsong at OAK, Tyler Mahle vs MIN, Max Meyer at NYM, Albert Suarez vs BOS, Bailey Falter vs SEA.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”

I’m pretty sure Billy Hamilton scored from 2B on a sac fly a couple times. Man, that guy was fun to watch on the bases. It’s really so sad that he never learned to hit. That guy could have stolen 100 bases if he had ever learned to hit even a little bit.

Actually, I remember seeing video not too long ago of Kirk Gibson scoring from 2B on a passed ball. The pitcher caught the ball from the catcher and wanted no part of really trying to tag Gibson and gave the most half-hearted effort possible.
