Closer Chaos

Mike Clevinger threw a third of an inning, allowing one run on three walks and a hit in the loss to the Guardians on Tuesday.

Clevinger was put in the position to keep the game tied and failed spectacularly. It is hard to know who is the closer for the White Sox, but it is unlikely they will win enough for it to matter outside of the deepest of leagues.

Quick Hits

Manuel Margot was placed on the IL with knee inflammation. There is no timetable for his return.

Jonny DeLuca was placed on the IL with a shoulder strain. He is expected to miss 2-to-4 weeks with the injury. Coco Montes was recalled to take his spot on the roster.

Jake Rogers was placed on the IL with an oblique injury. Typically these injuries take about 4-to-6 weeks to recover from. Tomás Nido was recalled to take his spot on the roster.

Connor Wong was placed on the IL with a fractured finger. Blake Sabol was recalled to take his spot on the roster.

Victor Robles was placed on the IL with a fractured shoulder. He is expected to miss 12 weeks. Dominic Canzone was recalled to take his spot on the roster.

Matt McLain was placed on the IL with a hamstring injury. This is disappointing because it didn’t seem overly serious. The hope is he will return once first eligible on April 16th. Noelvi Marte was recalled to take his spot on the roster along with Will Benson

Lane Thomas left Tuesday’s game after being hit with a pitch on the wrist.

X-rays were negative so he appears to have avoided serious injury. Consider him day-to-day at this time.

Spencer Arrighetti was placed on the IL with a broken thumb. Arrighetti suffered the injury while shagging balls in the outfield during BP. There is no timetable for his return.

Jackson Merrill was placed on the IL with a hamstring injury. There is no timetable for his return. The Padres recalled Oscar Gonzalez to take his spot on the roster.

Pablo López left Tuesday’s start with a hamstring injury.

Lopez was great up until running into trouble in the fifth inning and then suffered the injury. Consider him day-to-day for now, but this looks like it will take an IL stint.

Mark Canha left Tuesday’s game with a hip issue. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Wyatt Langford left Tuesday’s game with a side injury. He is expected to get an MRI on Wednesday. This is a bummer as Langford started the season extremely hot. Consider him day-to-day for now but these often end up as 4-to-6 week injuries.

Jake Cronenworth left Tuesday’s game with a rib injury. He appeared to be in a lot of pain when it happened but manager Mike Shildt stated that he was “not overly concerned” following the game. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Fernando Tatis Jr. left Tuesday’s game with a shoulder issue. He appeared to be uncomfortable after a swing earlier in the game and then did not reenter. He stated after the game that he is day-to-day for now.

Various News and Notes
Easton Lucas threw 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out eight in the victory over the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Lucas was good in the outing, but he relies too much on his fastball and not enough on his secondaries. He isn’t likely to stick in the rotation for long, but he can be a decent deep league streamer in good matchups.

Zac Veen went 1-for-4 in his Major League debut on Tuesday.

Veen has been a prospect that people have been high on since he was drafted in the top 10 of the 2020 draft, but he has struggled with contact and health in the minors. There is a lot of power and speed in the profile, but it remains to be seen if he can unlock it with his swing and miss issues.

JJ Bleday went 2-for-3 with a home run in the victory over the Padres on Tuesday.

Bleday has struggled to start the season, but he is making good contact in the zone and the park will help him unlock more power. This could be a good buying point for him.

FWIW Arrighetti wasn’t shagging balls, he was playing catch in the outfield during the opposing team’s BP and was struck by a line drive.
