Sleeper and the Bust DK Contest

On most Tuesday’s and Friday’s and some other days, Paul Sporer and I will be doing a $5 draftkings game for anyone that is interested.

Closer Chaos

John Brebbia was placed on the IL with a calf strain. Brebbia dealt with the issue in spring training and clearly it was aggravated again. This should cement Michael Kopech as the main closer in Chicago for a little while.

Jeff Hoffman blew the save versus the Cardinals on Monday, allowing two earned runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one. This is Hoffman’s second blown save of the season. He was in the mix for saves in Philly, but outings like this give Jose Alvarado a better hold on the job.

Quick Hits

Framber Valdez was scratched from his start on Monday with soreness in his left elbow. This is very concerning. He is expected to undergo further testing, but this often ends up leading to Tommy John surgery. Consider him day-to-day for now, but be ready for the worst.

Jonathan India was scratched with a leg contusion. Consider him day-to-day at this time.

Chase Silseth was placed on the IL with elbow inflammation. This does not sound good. He is probably droppable in most formats.

Justin Foscue was placed on the IL with an oblique strain. This is disappointing as Foscue had just gotten called up. He will likely miss 4-to-6 weeks.

Various News and Notes

Will Benson went 2-for-3 with a home run in the victory over the Brewers on Monday.
Will Benson went 2-for-3 with a home run in the victory over the Brewers on Monday.

This was Benson’s first career home run versus a left-handed pitcher which is great to see as Benson has largely been a strong side platoon player when he does play. If he can continue to show improvements versus lefties, he could be in line for a massive breakout as a power/speed threat in the best park to hit in.

Spencer Turnbull threw six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out six in the no-decision versus Cardinals.

Turnbull was fantastic once again, getting a 46% whiff rate on his sweeper and a 33% CSW overall. Turnbull is pitching well right now and he is widely available so while he is healthy, he is a pretty great pick up.

Brando Nimmo went 4-for-4 with two home runs in the victory over the Braves on Monday.

Nimmo had struggled out of the gate, but he turned it on for this one. Nimmo is still available in about 30% of Yahoo leagues and is a sneaky asset for runs and average while not being a zero in power.

Trey Lipscomb went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases in the victory over the Giants on Monday.

Lipscomb only got the third base job because Nick Senzel broke his hand at the start of the season, but he has made the most of his opportunity, hitting .265/.286/.353 with a home run and four stolen bases. Lipscomb doesn’t have a carrying tool in fantasy, but he is getting an opportunity to play regularly and the Nationals are pushing it on the base paths which makes him interesting in deeper formats.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today: Patrick Sandoval at TB

After a rough first start, Sandoval rebounded nicely in his second start of the season and has a decent matchup in a good park.

High Risk Options: Martin Perez vs DET.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Erick Fedde at CLE

Fedde has pitched well so far and has a decent matchup.

High Risk Options: Ross Stripling at TEX, Jose Soriano vs TB.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”

The Monday broadcast said India was out because of swelling in his hand after taking a pitch off it.

I’m rooting for Benson, and his contact quality is high, but his whiffiness is concerning. He’ll be lucky to hit .240 if he keeps expanding the zone, but everything he does hit should be well struck.
