Closer Chaos
Bryan Abreu threw a third of an inning, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk while blowing the save.
Abreu has struggled in the closer role this year but may not be long for the role. Josh Hader is working his way back from injury in the minors and the Astros could pivot to Bryan King in the meantime.
Quick Hits
Hunter Brown was placed on the 15-Day IL with a shoulder strain. Brown struggled with some control issues in his first couple of starts, but he seemed healthy, so this is surprising. There is no timetable for his return, so you are reserving him until we get more news.
Mookie Betts was placed on the 10-Day IL with an oblique strain. This was a bit odd because initial reports were that he was dealing with a back issue and then after imaging it was determined that he had an oblique strain. Typically these injuries take about 4-to-6 weeks to recover from. Hyeseong Kim 김혜성 was recalled to take Betts’ spot on the roster.
Jared Triolo was placed on the IL with a knee injury. There is no timetable for his return.
Everson Pereira was placed on the IL with an ankle injury. He had been dealing with the injury for a couple of days before he was placed on the IL, so there is a chance this will be a short stay.
Cade Horton was placed on the IL with a forearm strain. Horton left his last start in obvious pain. He will likely miss an extended time as these forearm strains are often a precursor to more serious injuries.
Addison Barger left Sunday’s game with an ankle injury.
The Blue Jays stated after the game that the injury is not believed to be serious. Consider him day-to-day at this time.
Mike Trout left Sunday’s game after being hit by a pitch.
X-rays were negative. Consider him day-to-day at this time.
Various News and Notes
Braxton Ashcraft threw six innings versus the Orioles on Sunday, allowing one run on four hits without giving up a walk while striking out eight in the victory.
Ashcraft has done a great job of keeping hitters off-balance this season, throwing five different pitches and mixing them well, especially the curve, which has been fantastic. The stuff isn’t overwhelming, but he does such a good job of sequencing that he can be successful, especially at PNC where the park protects him from home runs.
Mickey Moniak went 2-for-4 with two home runs in the victory over the Phillies on Sunday.
Moniak had been struggling prior to Sunday, but turned things around quickly at the expense of Taijuan Walker. Moniak has power and will play versus righties, but his platoon and home/road splits means he is best served for leagues where you can optimize him like daily lineups leagues.
TJ Rumfield went 1-for-4 with a home run in the victory over the Phillies on Sunday.
Rumfield has been great so far for the Rockies, but he has a hit tool over power profile. That will work well in Colorado where BABIP’s are inflated, but you shouldn’t expect him to be a massive power source.

“Moniak had been struggling prior to Sunday” – he just came off the IL on Friday for his first game of the season, so not a particularly long struggle (1-for-5).
