Rich Hill as a reliever?

via GIPHY

Dave Roberts said a bullpen role could happen for Rich Hill. The blister magnet once again landed on the D.L. with that middle finger-recurring issue. He will begin a rehab assignment soon.

This changes up the starting rotation should this occur with Julio Urias being put in the starting rotation. So that could be fun.

The 20-year-old is kind of serving as a placeholder at the moment and after a solid 1.93 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 14 innings with Triple-A Omaha, he could get the start against the Giants Wednesday.

News and Notes

Troy Tulowitzki landed on the 10-day D.L. because he (along with everyone else in Major League Baseball it seems) has a hamstring injury. Ryan Goins replaced him Saturday night in the lineup. Goins hits a lot of groundballs, but seems to possess a lot of power. If you need a filler spot especially in the daily game, I don’t hate rostering him depending on the matchup.

Howie Kendrick is expected to miss 2-3 weeks with an oblique strain.

George Springer is also the recipient of a hamstring injury. He left Saturday’s game with some discomfort. He’s day-to-day, but who knows with those hamstrings.

Car Mar

Carlos Martinez has been riding the struggle bus lately. He’s 0-3 with a 4.76 ERA and recently said he was worried.

“I’m not really sure what’s going on,” he said to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis-Post Dispatch. “I’m just trying to find my rhythm and get the mechanics down right. It’s just trying to locate that fastball.” His zone percentage dropped quite a bit from last season.

I still think he’s worth holding on to, however. He is carrying a 12.31 K/9 rate and even with an increase in his flyball/home run ratio, once he gains control, he can be unstoppable.

Maeda

Kenta Maeda’s next start could be delayed so he can “work on his pitching mechanics.”

He’s allowing a lot of runs this season and can’t seem to find his groove. That’s showing in his 8.05 ERA and even though the hard contact rate off of him has lessened, something is obviously not working.

Fantasy owners should really keep him on a short leash or avoid him altogether in his next start.

I have really tried to avoid commenting on the quality of these lately but this is just a baffling statement and makes me wonder what purpose these Roto Riteups are supposed to serve. Not only is the information contained in many of these recent Riteups mostly useless, it is increasingly just plain wrong.

Ryan Goins has zero power and even less fantasy value. Unless you happen to play in an AL-only, defense-only league with a player pool limited to players named Ryan… then go for it.

As a Jays fan who has had to watch Ryan Goins take the field all to often in the past 4 years I have to concur with TXHusker25. Id even go so far to say that the player pool has to be limited not just to “Ryan’s” but to “Ryan Gs”.

I was going to write something similar about the Goins comment, but thank you for saving me the trouble.

After 956 MLB plate appearances, Ryan Goins sports a career .102 ISO.

I will add that terming Urias as a “placeholder” looks an awful lot like the language utilized in Rotoworld’s Urias blurb dated April 22nd. One would hope this is merely an unfortunate coincidence.

This has to be addressed by the author. There is literally nothing in Ryan Goins’ major or minor league history, from either a stats or scouting point of view, that would suggest he has a lot of power.

“…[Ryan Goins] seems to possess a lot of power…” just feels like trolling at this point.

I love that Goins just went deep. That’s too good.
