Reviewing Close Ottoneu Races
There are just six days left in the baseball season, and ottoneu owners are officially in crunch time in their quest for a title. As these final days play out, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the closest races across ottoneu FanGraphs points leagues as of this morning using the same standings pull that I run when creating the power rankings.
Closest Two Team Races
These are the leagues with the smallest difference between first and second place as of this morning (across all FGPTS leagues the first place team has an average lead of 577 points).
LgNum | LgName | 1st | 2nd | Delta |
---|---|---|---|---|
240 | For God and Country Breakfast | 18,340.6 | 18,335.4 | 5.2 |
652 | Dozen Eggheads of Fantasy | 18,158.4 | 18,149.0 | 9.4 |
772 | World Series of Tubes | 18,424.3 | 18,406.9 | 17.4 |
236 | Viva el otto | 19,052.2 | 19,033.4 | 18.8 |
160 | Anyone but the Cubs in ’17 | 18,349.8 | 18,330.5 | 19.3 |
288 | Black Dog Baseball | 18,411.9 | 18,390.2 | 21.7 |
220 | STS Readers League | 20,151.8 | 20,127.1 | 24.7 |
334 | Hall of Fame | 17,933.3 | 17,903.9 | 29.4 |
774 | Pesapallo | 17,864.5 | 17,822.6 | 41.9 |
400 | Sure, We Could Be GMs | 18,788.2 | 18,733.8 | 54.4 |
It’s pretty obvious that these ten leagues are still up for grabs, as all of them have less than 55 points separating the current leader and second place.
In 240 Madam, I’m Matt Adams is looking to win his third title after winning in ’14 and ’15, while Miguel’s Caballeros are trying to defend their ’16 championship.
The Get Downs currently lead in league 772 and are seeking their first win, as is the current runner up Colonic Groupon (no thanks!).
League 236 has been experiencing some intense gamesmanship this week, as both teams scramble to max out their IP with SP luminaries such as Matt Boyd (won for $72), Robert Stephenson ($39), and Erasmo Ramirez ($86). Yes, those are the actual amounts each player was won for.
In league 160 the Trea Huggers are seeking back to back titles, but Kluber Lang and the Pitied Fools have IP in hand and have an excellent chance of winning their first pennant.
Another league, another team trying to add to their trophy case, as Actually Doug, I knew her well attempts to capture their third championship in 288.
Closest Three Team Races
First, a quick note- across all FGPTS leagues the average gap between first place and third place is 1,148 points. These leagues all feature three teams within 200 points of each other, which makes for an exciting multi-team finish.
LgNum | LgName | 1st | 3rd | Delta |
---|---|---|---|---|
652 | Dozen Eggheads of Fantasy | 18,158.4 | 18,133.1 | 25.3 |
774 | Pesapallo | 17,864.5 | 17,759.0 | 105.5 |
324 | SABRTastic | 18,792.2 | 18,663.8 | 128.4 |
380 | Just a Bit Outside | 18,745.4 | 18,616.8 | 128.6 |
726 | When It Was A Game | 18,341.7 | 18,157.0 | 184.7 |
League 774 features an incredible race, as there are actually four teams within 124 points of each other at the top, and all four teams would be first time winners in this league. Montreal Royals holds a narrow lead at the moment, but they have by far the least innings thrown so in theory they should be able to stack more SP starts over the next six days.
Closest Four Team Races
LgNum | LgName | 1st | 4th | Delta |
---|---|---|---|---|
652 | Dozen Eggheads of Fantasy | 18,158.4 | 18,120.1 | 38.3 |
774 | Pesapallo | 17,864.5 | 17,740.9 | 123.6 |
752 | Fantasy Field of Dreams | 17,729.8 | 17,388.8 | 341.0 |
Even though they’ve appeared on every table so far, I’ve saved Dozen Eggheads of Fantasy for last because their race puts all others to shame. There are a ridiculous FIVE teams within 100 points of each other at the top of the standings. To put that in perspective, only 18 out of 137 total FGPts leagues feature a less than 100 point gap between first and second, but 652 has a 92.1 point gap between first and fifth.
Biggest Lead
Just for giggles, here is the flip side of the coin. These are the leagues where the gap from first to second is the largest.
LgNum | LgName | 1st | 2nd | Delta |
---|---|---|---|---|
81 | Big Ray King | 19,945.8 | 17,315.5 | 2,630.3 |
120 | Fourteenth Inning Stretch | 19,241.7 | 17,039.8 | 2,201.9 |
90 | UZR Friendly | 19,722.1 | 18,031.9 | 1,690.2 |
226 | Dynasty Minds | 19,504.2 | 17,852.5 | 1,651.7 |
617 | RNCs Bastard Mixed Offspring | 19,997.3 | 18,393.3 | 1,604.0 |
Good luck to all of you fighting for a title in these leagues!

Probably the last we see of this. One of the two commissioners of this league has mostly put a stop to this by enforcing the fairly vague “at no time shall a team intentionally exceed the salary cap” rule. Too bad… it was fun.
So one cannot bid above one’s free space then, even if the owner can get under the cap by cutting a player? Because by the letter of the law, that would be “intentionally exceeding the salary cap.” Seems like an overreaction IMO.
You absolutely can bid above your free cap space, and that’s an intentional mechanic of ottoneu that’s perfectly legal.
Mechanically that is legal, yes, but this would be technically a violation of the commissioner’s added rule as stated above.
I could maybe see that argument, but I don’t believe it’s against the spirit or intention of the rules Niv created.
But the question is then how long can you have an illegal roster (too many players or over budget)? How long is too long?
That enforcement is up to the commish. My personal rule of thumb is to allow 24-48 hours for owners to get legal.
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking is about right
This commish is auto-benching players *as soon* as he sees an illegal roster rather than allowing the system’s built in mechanics to deal with it. Looks like he gave one of these teams an hour and fifteen minutes notice before games started.
Feels way over the top.
Interesting too because if you just let system’s mechanics come into play, there are other loopholes you can exploit at the end here, right (win a guy that makes your roster illegal on second to last day of the season, allow your roster to run as normal, then cut a very valuable guy you normally would never cut to make your roster legal to then move that won guy into place for the last day, something like that). I tend to think loopholes like this should be allowed to be exploited, but not in this case I guess!
Unless you league has some commish tools that mine doesn’t, I don’t know what this means. I could not “auto-bench” someone else’s players even if I wanted to.
