Ottoneu Power Rankings: May 2017
It’s time for another edition of the monthly ottoneu power rankings. We are now two months into this season, and this is about the time where league standings start to crystallize and the contenders are separating themselves from the pretenders.
You can find prior power rankings here: April, 2016 Final
The first ranking I’m going to present shows the top individual teams in all FanGraphs points leagues based on their Pace, which is a metric I calculate by taking each team’s current Pts/G and Pts/IP and multiplying them by their projected games (max of 1,944) and innings (max of 1,500). Also, please note that any teams/leagues from leagues with less than twelve teams are excluded from these rankings.
OvRnk | LgNum | TeamName | Points | PPG | PIP | pGP | pIP | PACE |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 354 | Mookie Betts and the TINSTAAP GANG | 7,223.7 | 6.20 | 5.87 | 1,909 | 1,500 | 20,639 |
2 | 183 | Laser Showalter ??? | 6,852.6 | 6.28 | 5.60 | 1,904 | 1,475 | 20,215 |
3 | 153 | Graham’s Neubies | 7,085.0 | 5.98 | 5.68 | 1,944 | 1,500 | 20,145 |
4 | 477 | Gimme All Yasmani | 7,010.3 | 6.11 | 5.60 | 1,919 | 1,500 | 20,127 |
5 | 228 | Lollygaggers | 6,818.7 | 5.83 | 6.12 | 1,870 | 1,500 | 20,084 |
6 | 513 | RANDAL HANDSHAKE | 6,859.8 | 5.99 | 5.66 | 1,934 | 1,500 | 20,074 |
7 | 107 | El Festival de Batazos | 7,051.6 | 6.38 | 5.06 | 1,944 | 1,500 | 19,993 |
8 | 435 | Saratoga Grays | 7,021.9 | 6.11 | 5.39 | 1,944 | 1,500 | 19,963 |
9 | 236 | Tag! You’re So Uchi | 6,862.0 | 6.28 | 5.57 | 1,842 | 1,500 | 19,922 |
10 | 617 | Vottoman Empire | 7,643.1 | 6.21 | 5.21 | 1,944 | 1,500 | 19,887 |
Note- there are 1,596 FGpts teams across 133 leagues.
Offensive scoring continues to outpace 2016 levels, as FGPts teams averaged 5.23 Pts/G (up from 5.13 Pts/G in May ’16), but just 4.74 Pts/IP (down from 5.09 Pts/IP in May ’16). Overall scoring is still down, as just a single team projects over 20,500 points and only six are pacing over 20,000 points.
There is a new #1 team in the rankings, as Mookie Betts and the TINSTAAP GANG rise from #2, and the former #1 Vottoman Empire drops to #10. All told five teams in the top ten are repeats from last month.
Up next are the FGPts League rankings:
LgRnk | LgNum | LgName | AvgRk | Rnk+ |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 606 | Three Tool Front Office | 605.6 | 131.9 |
2 | 652 | Dozen Eggheads of Fantasy | 621.8 | 128.4 |
3 | 568 | The Show | 628.5 | 127.0 |
4 | 90 | UZR Friendly | 630.7 | 126.6 |
5 | 530 | Ottoneu Champions (530) | 638.8 | 125.0 |
6 | 791 | The Champagne Room | 639.0 | 125.0 |
7 | 347 | MVP Baseball 2005 | 641.3 | 124.5 |
8 | 637 | So… OttoGraphs is a thing? | 647.2 | 123.4 |
9 | 649 | Brinksmanship | 647.4 | 123.3 |
10 | 532 | A Small Sample | 657.7 | 121.4 |
A Small Sample drops from first all the way to tenth this month and Three Tool Front Office makes their first appearance on the rankings at the very top. Last year’s #1 league Brinksmanship rises one spot in the rankings from last month.
I was asked in the comments last month if there was a way to separate out prize leagues, so below you will see the breakdown by prize tier of league AvgRk (the average overall team rank of all twelve teams in the league, lower is better). Please note that many leagues handle prizes outside of the ottoneu system, so some of the non-prize leagues may actually play for stakes.
Average for all leagues: 798.5
$0 Tier (these are the staff/experts leagues, 4 leagues)- 796.8
$10 Tier (92 leagues)- 821.4
$50 Tier (30 leagues)- 748.9
$100 Tier (6 leagues)- 723.2
$250 Tier (1 league)- 639.0
Non-Prize Leagues (96 total)- 820.4
Prize Leagues (37 total)- 741.8
I don’t think this data is conclusive, but it does suggest that prize leagues perform better in the league rankings.
Up next, the SABR league power rankings. I’m only going to show the top five teams/leagues as there are much fewer SABR leagues than FanGraphs points leagues.

Note- There are 204 teams and 17 leagues in the SABR points format.
Up next are the two rotisserie ottoneu formats, starting with the traditional 5×5 leagues. To calculate the top teams, I treated the entire population of teams as one big league, and gave every team points for every category based on where they ranked against every other team.

Nice job quantifying what many of us have observed over the years – prize leagues tend to be more competitive, top to bottom. I think they’re different animals. I’d enjoy seeing Top 10 FGPts Teams by Pace, as well as the league power rankings filtered for only prize leagues.
