Mike Fontenot and Cody Ross: Waiver Wire for May 11th

Join us this week on Bottom of the Barrel Scrapers as we look at a stopgap infielder with multi-position eligibility and a former playoff hero who just might have found his stroke in 2011.  They may not be the tastiest treats on the fantasy dessert buffet, but hey…they’ve each got a World Series ring.  That’s something, right?

Even as I sit here writing this, there’s a piece of me saying, “Really?  You’re gonna push Fontenot on them?”  But, believe it or not, he does actually have some value right now.  With Pablo Sandoval on the DL for atleast another month and Miguel Tejada stinkin’ up the joint, a window of opportunity has opened up for the Giants utility man/super sub and he seems to be doing a fairly decent job with the playing time he’s been given.  The batting average may not be so glamorous, but he’s hit safely in five of his last seven games with a home run, five RBI, three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.  He’s got seven walks over his last seven games and is sporting an OBP just north of .350 for the season.  Even better is that for the seventh game in a row, manager Bruce Bochy has had Fontenot hitting third in the lineup, offering ample opportunities to succeed.  He may not play every game of the week, but he should garner a good amount of playing time over the next month and, with his position eligibility, can fill in your roster blanks very nicely on a daily basis.

Last season’s Bay Area fan favorite and NLCS MVP missed the tail end of spring training and most of April with a strained calf, but seems to have finally found his late 2010 form here in the month of May.  He’s hitting .368 over his last eight games and has gotten back to his late game heroics as evidenced by his 3-run homer against Colorado on Sunday and his game winning liner down the third base line in Tuesday’s win over Arizona.  He’s limiting the strikeouts (only three in his last 27 AB) and his batting average, OBP and BABIP are all moving in the right direction.  He may only hit .260ish for the year, but Ross definitely has the potential to hit close to 20 home runs with 70 odd RBI.  It’s a shame that Bochy likes to hit him so low in the lineup (usually 8th), but he should be out there almost every game and provide you with some decent mid-level pop for a low end outfielder.
