Justin Mason: Sorry for late start!

Strategy Q: At this stage in the season, in an only league without much bench room, would you rather take a flier on an SP (WW people are Bowdin Francis, Sears, Marsh types) or possible closer (Steven Wilson, Schreiber, Shelby Miller are the types)? Feels like the starters have a higher floor (a streamer who you can use against a majority of teams is useful if not sexy) but the RPs have more ceiling (saves are way more in demand, but the path to getting there is unlikely with these names).

Justin Mason: I think it is very dependent on what my team needs. If I need saves to compete, I would take the gamble there. I really like Marsh and his situation in KC, so if I wasn’t save needy, that is who I would go with.

Too Many Mooks: So Tyler O’Neill looks like he’s back, eh?

Justin Mason: Health is always the issue with O’Neill. If he can stay healthy, he is a really good fantasy player. Ride it until he gets hurt.

Bob: Do you think high strikeout hitters Nolan Jones, Elly De La Cruz or Oneil Cruz can turn it around?

Justin Mason: Absolutely. This is what you sign up for when you draft these guys. Got to let it play out because the hot streaks will be worth it.

Bob: Is Keaton Winn worth an add in deeper leagues?

Justin Mason: I honestly don’t know. He could lose his rotation spot with Snell coming back and Alex Cobb working his way back. Short term maybe because Cobb just had a setback, but I think Long term, he probably goes to the bullpen or the minors.

The Butler Didn’t Do It: I worry that the Lawrence Butler experiment is proving a mistake. Drop for Josh H. Smith (also platoon but better lineup) or David Hamilton (Steals but…) in AL OBP?

Justin Mason: Give me Hamilton who has a ton of speed upside.

Jim Joe Kelly: Are Mountcastle & Ward must roster in 10tm format?

Justin Mason: I think Ward is for sure. Mountcastle is close but first base is so deep in a 10-team league I can understand if you don’t want to make the necessary cut.

Quentin: I am in a shallow format, 12 team, 20 man rosters, 3 OF and the 5 infield spots with one util. Looking to drop Michael Conforto for one of: Tyler O’Neil or Taylor Ward. Is this an upside vs floor decision. Which way would you lean?

Justin Mason: Give me the upside of O’Neill while he is healthy

Peter: Hey Justin, does Luis Matos find everyday at bats in SF this season? He has 2 HRs in minors already. Good stash or better with an Oliver Dunn or Blaze Alexander type?

Justin Mason: I really like Matos but he needs an injury to get back to the Majors. I think I would rather have Dunn right now.

And again: Ronel Blanco: just defying the odds or a new approach that could hold up at least in the short term? Thanks

Justin Mason: I think a little of both. He has clearly made improvements in locating the zone but it is always hard to believe that a 30-year-old journeyman will stay this good long term. Ride it until it falls apart.

Bob: Do you think Skenes will be up in April?

Justin Mason: I would say early May. Still getting stretched out.

Peter: What’s holding Colson Montgomery back to be the everyday SS?

Justin Mason: The White Sox not wanting to start his clock.

Peter: When should we expect the next wave of prospect call up this year? What are the general dates for an extra year of eligibility and Super 2 deadline?

Justin Mason: End of April/Early May

Jim Joe Kelly: Please rank these SP for ROS: Bello, Kutter, Christopher Sanchez, Crochet, Pepiot. All worth holding and finding out about in a shallow (10tm) format or any not worth it at all? Thank you

Justin Mason: Sanchez, Crochet, Crawfod, Pepiot, Bello

Justin Mason: Like them all. Would hold the first two in a shallow league and stream the rest.

Peter: James Outman has started out super slow, thoughts?

Justin Mason: This is the risk with Outman. He has loud tools, but struggles to make consistent in zone contact. There will be brighter days, but you have to be a little patient with him.

Peter: Thoughts on Michael Busch’s start to the season?

Justin Mason: He is doing everything he needs to do to keep getting PAs. Making good in-zone contact and hitting the ball hard. Love that we are starting to see him play

Vic: Deep league….15 teams. Any value to Will Brennan?

Justin Mason: As a low upside accumulator, yes, but I don’t think there is much here other than that.

Peter: Can Nolan Schanuel develop more power?

Justin Mason: Can, I think so. Will? I don’t know that he is even looking to do that.

The Path of Totality: Pepiot, Canning, Matz, or Blackburn for QS league 12-team points?

Justin Mason: Matz, Pepiot, Canning Blackburn is the order for me.

Vic: Lawrence Butler or Will Brennan?

Justin Mason: Butler has upside and Brennan is more safe. What does your team/format need?

Going Ham(ilton): Any interest in David Hamilton? Think he has MLB chops? Vs. Tyler Freeman in AL OBP league?

Justin Mason: I think he can be really valuable from a stolen base aspect if the Red Sox give him PAs. Huge upside.

Guest: How valuable is Ke’Bryan Hayes in shallower leagues compared to low % rostered 1B/3B guys like Busch, Kiriloff, Baty, etc.?

Justin Mason: I think Hayes is definitely more valuable than all those guys though I do love Busch. The role and talent floor is better for Hayes though and there is still is unrealized upside in the profile.

Darren D.: Trey Lipscomb…anything there?

Justin Mason: Probably not more than a low value accumulator but I think he is going to play regularly for now.

JD: Any word on Gavin Williams‘ ETA? Haven’t seen any updates as to whether he’s still on track for mid-April

Justin Mason: I haven’t seen anything yet

Leash on Life: How long a leash do you give for preseason darts in an only league? Not high investment guys, but people you help out hope for and with a thin WW?

Justin Mason: Probably about 3-4 weeks

JD: Slow start for Henry Davis — any reason for concern, or just give the kid time to settle in?

Justin Mason: I would give him a little time especially in leagues where you are using him as a catcher.

Justin Mason: Moving back behind the plate has a learning curve. I think he will hit well enough to have value.

Vic: What do you think it the absolute best case scenario for Josiah Gray? 200 Ks, 4 ERA, 1.25 WHIP?

Justin Mason: That would be huge if he could get there. I just don’t know unless he makes a massive change that the ERA will be consistently under 4.40

Adenolith: Standard H2H – My opponent and I both have 8 starts this week and I’m looking to add one more starter to lock in a better chance at Ks/Ws without destroying my ratios. Between R. Olson (Pit, Min), Paxton (Min, SD), Kremer (Mil), or Bryce Miller (Chc), I’m leaning Olson. Does that sound right to you? Also have Jared Jones on the bench, but v Phi is too scary for me.

Justin Mason: I think Olson is the right call, but I love Kremer

Justin Mason: I think you need a few more plate appearances and to stay healthy to get to 100+

JD: What’s a reasonable hitter return for Ronel Blanco? (Also, I wasn’t the only person who left him on the bench for both of his great starts, right?)

Justin Mason: If I can get a top 100 player for him, I am doing it.

Jim: How you ranking Correa, Gelof, India, Estrada in roto with the usual cats + OPS?

Justin Mason: India, Gelof, Estrada, Correa

Justin Mason: Might flip Correa and Estrada

Broken Bat: What do you expect from Vaughn of BoSox once he completes his rehab? With Story out ??? Do the RedSox try him and his questionable arm at Shortstop, or plug and play t 2nd base? IYO is he pencilled to be an everyday player?

Justin Mason: I think he is an every day player at 2B. I don’t think he should play SS ever

Why not Zoidberg?: A lot of panic drops in my 8-teamer this week. Would you be dropping any of Olson, Hicks, Littell, Jared Jones, or Turang to pick up any of Ober, Bassit, or Kikuchi?

Justin Mason: Drop Olson and Littell for Ober and Bassitt

Guest: 10 man league h2h.   Who do I start at SS…  Volpe, Elly De La Cruz, or CJ Abrams.  Any of these guys worthy to be a utility player over a struggling Nolan Jones?

Justin Mason: I take all those guys over Jones, but I have been a huge detractor of Jones.

Jonathan: Looking to scoop Bailey Ober off waivers after a hasty drop from another team. Who should be the drop between Kyle Harrison or Gavin Stone?

Justin Mason: I think so. He looks lost.

Colton: Civale a good replacement pick up for Bieber? My dynasty team has self destructed over the past 2 weeks with 6 total players on IL at this point lol

Justin Mason: I think Civale is the right pick up, but I really want Crochet in every league.

Bassitt: Bassitt is off to a rough start. Is there anything in the underlying numbers that raises concerns for you?

Justin Mason: Nah, I am not worried yet. It is early.

Justin Mason: Only because they will get wins in Atlanta with that offense behind them. I don’t necessarily like them as pitchers.

Mochi: What do you think the logical timeline looks like for the MiLB to break up this budding Norfolk Tides dynasty? More specifically, Kyle Stowers.  He’s 26, they gotta move him at some point right?

Justin Mason: I think a ton of those guys including Stowers are up in May or traded for pitching.

Parker Tiger: Do I still believe? Cold start in majors after terrific spring.

Justin Mason: I think Meadows will be fine as long as he doesn’t get sent down. It is early.

Justin Mason: No, I think he will be fine. Still making good contact in the zone and is getting a little unlucky and just a bit cold right now.

Wayne: H2H Points, thoughts on dropping K Ruiz for either M Garver or J Heim?

Justin Mason: I would take Heim

Marsh Mellow: I was interested in Marsh also but seeing him get hit around by the White Sox made me worried

Justin Mason: I think there will be up and downs, but I like him as a team streamer in deeper leagues and a regular streamer in shallower ones.

Ryan: Is Christopher Sanchez droppable in a 10tm h2h league? Have pitchers like Ober and L.Allen on the waiver wire

Justin Mason: I am holding but I would pick up Ober for someone else if I could.

Hank: How would you rank Rodon, Whitlock, Olson and Lugo going forward?  Rodon has looked like he has no alibi thusfar.

Justin Mason: I think it is Rodon, Whitlock, Lugo, Olson for me.

Justin Mason: Garcia has definitely added power and it shows. I think he is a huge breakout this season. Conforto is just finally healthy, for now.

Justin Mason: I just tend to stay away from guys with problems the previous year. You can’t avoid all the injuries, but I avoided guys like Bieber and Woo because they had issues last season.

Dan: Do you think Luis Gil will be able to start going deeper into games? His stuff is bonkers but he really seems to struggle with command. If Turnbull’s changes stick and he throws well again today, who would you rather have between those two?

Justin Mason: I don’t know if they let him very often because of how few innings he has thrown in recent seasons.
