Justin Mason’s 2022 Catchers Rank: 2/28/22
As we head into primetime drafting season, I will be rereleasing my positional ranks. Here are my current ranks for the catcher position for 2022, my third of the offseason. I will post updates as things change with signings, injuries, or news in Major League Baseball. On the Sleeper and the Bust Patreon, you can see the rankings updated live.

Rank | Player | Team | POS | ADP | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
| J.T. Realmuto | PHI | C | 53.45 | Only catcher that contributes in all categories. |
| Salvador Perez | KCR | C | 38.05 | I can’t pull the trigger on a 3rd round catcher. |
| Will Smith | LAD | C | 63.58 | Could be in line for more ABs with the DH in the NL. |
| Yasmani Grandal | CHW | C | 107.93 | Grandal is underrated because he missed so much time with injury last season |
| Willson Contreras | CHC | C | 115.5 | About as steady as there is. Runs and RBIs could be better if traded. |
| Daulton Varsho | ARI | C/OF | 94.53 | Love the steals and chance for full time PAs while catcher eligible. |
| Tyler Stephenson | CIN | C/1B | 153.08 | Finally gets the full time role and he could get time at 1B/DH. Breakout potential. |
| Elias Díaz | COL | C | 244.15 | Moved him way up my board because I believe in the second half breakout. |
| Alejandro Kirk | TOR | C | 244.93 | Needs someone to get traded, but when that happens, his price will skyrocket. |
| Keibert Ruiz | WAS | C | 156.5 | I love the skills, but am afraid the power won’t be there this year. |
| Sean Murphy | OAK | C | 256.18 | Could be all alone in Oakland. |
| Adley Rutschman | BAL | C | 205.13 | I think he will be good as soon as he arrives. |
| Carson Kelly | ARI | C | 284.95 | Was good until the injuries derailed him. |
| Gary Sánchez | NYY | C | 272.28 | Real power and real disappointing. |
| Mike Zunino | TBR | C | 282.28 | Power is legit, but there is a ton of risk to the swing and miss. |
| Mitch Garver | MIN | C | 194.73 | Love the talent, but hate the injuries. |
| Max Stassi | LAA | C | 297.8 | Love the talent, but hate the injuries. |
| Joey Bart | SF | C | 315.08 | Post-hype sleeper with a chance to fill Posey’s shoes. |
| Christian Vázquez | BOS | C | 227.68 | StatCast profile is very scary. No thanks for me. |
| Yadier Molina | STL | C | 312.98 | Molina gets no credit for being about as safe as they come. |
| Omar Narváez | MIL | C | 270.7 | I really expected more power in Milwaukee. 2019 looks like an outlier/rabbit ball. |
| Travis d’Arnaud | ATL | C | 233.03 | I am really worried about his ability to stay healthy. |
| Luis Torrens | SEA | C | 372.15 | Would love if he got full time ABs at DH. |
| Tucker Barnhart | DET | C | 388.15 | Love that he is helping the pitchers, don’t really care to draft him. |
| Eric Haase | DET | C | 320.68 | Loses value with Barnhart around and the team getting better. |
| Jorge Alfaro | SDP | C/OF | 371.33 | I think the addition of Alfaro means they will move another catcher or two from SD. |
| Danny Jansen | TOR | C | 310.78 | I think he could be dealt, but I think he is a decent gamble this late either way. |
| MJ Melendez | KC | C | 398.83 | If he gets run in the outfield, he could be a monster. |
| Austin Nola | SDP | C | 343.73 | On the move? |
| James McCann | NYM | C | 318.85 | He can’t be as bad as he was last year, but I don’t think he is good. |
| Cal Raleigh | SEA | C | 537.63 | It could be his time to shine on the upstart Mariners. |
| Yan Gomes | CHC | C | 359.93 | If Castillo is dealt, he would have the #1 role. |
| Francisco Mejía | TBR | C | 410.2 | Former top prospect doesn’t play enough to hit ceiling. |
| Jacob Stallings | PIT | C | 356.13 | Boring, but plays. |
| Ryan Jeffers | MIN | C | 449.2 | I want to believe the bat will get better. |
| Martín Maldonado | HOU | C | 532.68 | Plays a lot, but that may hurt more than help. |
| Dom Nunez | COL | C | 588.23 | Back in Colorado is as good as anywhere. |
| Jonah Heim | TEX | C | 418.05 | I think he is the better of the two Texas catchers. |
| Pedro Severino | MLW | C | 460.4 | Not a bad change of scenery, but he’s boring. |
| Manny Pina | ATL | C | 526.03 | Backup to an injury prone guy. |
| William Contreras | ATL | C | 636.78 | Blocked |
| Zack Collins | CHW | C | 689.95 | Can’t seem to give up on Collins. Needs a change of scenery. |
| Jose Trevino | TEX | C | 563.43 | Probably a backup. |
| Tom Murphy | SEA | C | 491.33 | I think his time is done. |
| Gabriel Moreno | TOR | C | 465.63 | Blocked right now. |
| Austin Hedges | CLE | C | 587.43 | Starting because of defense. |
| Kyle Higashioka | NYY | C | 574.65 | If Sanchez continues to struggle, he will get more time. |
| Luis Campusano | SD | C | 551.95 | Blocked right now. |
| Austin Barnes | LAD | C | 637.28 | Always seems to get just enough playing time. |
| Curt Casali | SFG | C | 601.13 | Handcuff if the Giants don’t trust Bart. |
